Introduction Few studies have examined the role of maternal diet in relation to development of autoimmune diseases such as coeliac disease (CD). In Denmark, cancellation of mandatory vitamin D fortification of margarine in June 1985 provides this opportunity. This study examined if prenatal exposure to extra vitamin D from food fortification or season of birth were associated with a decreased risk of developing CD later in life. If low prenatal vitamin D levels are a risk factor, there are immediate, cheap and easy public health implications. Methods This register based study has a partially ecologic design. The aim of this article was to examine the relationship between childhood caries, body mass index (BMI) and subsequent changes in BMI over 6 years, and to investigate whether these associations were modified by social class. Data were from the European Youth Heart Study (EYHS) merged with data on caries experience from the Danish National Board of Health, (SCOR register). At baseline, 26.2% of the children/adolescents were caries free and 39% at follow-up. A larger percentage of normal weight children/adolescents were caries free, compared with the overweight/obese group of children/adolescents. The linear regression analysis showed that childhood caries was generally not associated with either BMI or subsequent changes in BMI. However, among children whose mothers were well educated, there was an inverse association between caries at baseline and subsequent changes in BMI over a period of 6 years, for example, a high caries experience was associated with a smaller increment in BMI, compared with the group of children with a low caries experience. No association was found for those with lower SES. An inverse association between caries and subsequent changes in BMI was found, but only among children with well-educated mothers, suggesting that high caries experience may be a marker for low future risk of overweight among the more advantaged. Associations did not appear to be significant among the less advantaged; however, numbers in this group were low, and an association may have been overlooked. Hence, more studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Evidence from some previous reviews suggests that low vitamin D status during pregnancy increases the risk of developing GDM, but whether vitamin D during pregnancy also influences the risk of diabetes post GDM is less well studied. Thus, the aim of this systematic literature review was to summarize the current available literature on that topic. This review considered observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Five databases were searched. The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed. BACKGROUND Many weight loss programs show short-term effectiveness, but subsequent weight loss maintenance is difficult to achieve. Digital technologies offer promising means to delivering behaviour change approaches at low cost and on a wide scale. The NoHoW project was a European Commission H2020-funded project aimed to develop, test, and evaluate a digital Toolkit designed to promote successful long-term weight management. The Toolkit was tested in an 18-month large-scale international 2 x 2 factorial (motivation and self-regulation versus emotion regulation) randomised controlled trial, conducted in overweight/obese adults who lost ≥5% of their body weight in the preceding twelve months before enrolment into the intervention. OBJECTIVE This paper describes the development of the NoHoW Toolkit focusing on the logic models, content and specifications, and results from user testing. METHODS The Toolkit was developed using a systematic approach including (1) development of the theory-based logic models, (2) selection of behaviour change techniques, (3) translation of these techniques into a digital web-based app (NoHoW Toolkit components), (4) technical development, (5) user evaluation and refinement of the Toolkit. RESULTS The Toolkit included a set of web-based tools and inputs from digital tracking devices (smart scales and activity trackers), with modules targeting weight, physical activity, and dietary behaviours. The final Toolkit was comprised of 34 sessions, distributed through 15 modules, providing active content over a 4-month period. The motivation and self-regulation arm consisted of 8 modules (17 sessions), the emotion regulation arm was presented with 7 modules (17 sessions), and the combined arm received the full Toolkit (15 modules, 34 sessions). The sessions included a range of implementations, such as videos, testimonies, and questionnaires. Further, the Toolkit contained 5 specific data tiles for monitoring weight, steps, healthy eating, mood and sleep. CONCLUSIONS A systematic approach to the development of digital solutions based on theory, evidence, and user testing, may significantly contribute to the advancement of the science of behaviour change and improve current solutions for sustained weight management. Testing the Toolkit using a 2x2 design provided a unique opportunity to examine the effect of motivation and self-regulation and emotion regulation separately, as well as the effect of their interaction in weight loss maintenance. The epidemiological evidence that a high-fat diet promotes the development of obesity is considered suggestive but not definitive. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of various epidemiological methods that have been used to address this issue as well as an updated summary of the existing evidence. Ecological studies describing dietary fat intake and obesity at the population level provide mixed results and are likely to be biased by both confounding and unknown data quality factors that differ systematically across the populations studied. Cross-sectional studies are generally in agreement that the concentration of fat in the diet is positively associated with relative weight. Prospective studies of diet in relation to subsequent weight change give inconsistent results. This may be due to behavioural factors such as dieting in response to weight gain; in addition, this type of study rarely takes into account the possible interaction between genetic predisposition and dietary fat in promoting weight gain. Finally, intervention studies in free-living subjects are considered, providing evidence of a consistent but short-lived period of active weight loss on low-fat diets. The experimental evidence on this relationship is more conclusive than the epidemiological evidence, although biological mechanisms remain controversial. Some areas for future epidemiological research involve: longitudinal studies of dietary fat intake as a predictor of growth in children; observational studies relating total dietary fat and specific types of fat to overall as well as regional adiposity; and randomized intervention studies of the effect of low-fat diets with particular emphasis on and familial predisposition to obesity and other possible modifying factors.

This review study describes possible associations between environmental chemicals and the growing prevalence of obesity. The review mainly focuses on halogenated organic compounds and their possible effect on obesity development. The literature is, however, limited and knowledge of the mechanisms insufficient. Consequently, it is difficult to describe the risks from these chemicals on obesity development.

The model should make it possible to assess whether different initiatives reduce the prevalence of obesity and to gain knowledge on how to prevent obesity. The prevalence of obesity should be estimated in a non-biased randomly selected sample of the population once yearly, using all available data from routine measurements and encouraging new measurements conducted in professional settings where routine data are not available.

We aimed to assess the association between exposure to sunshine during gestation and the risk of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Danish children. The study population included 331,623 individuals born in Denmark from 1983 to 1988; 886 (0.26%) developed T1D by the age of 15 years. The values of sunshine hours were obtained from the Danish Meteorological Institute. Gestational exposure to sunshine was calculated by summing recorded monthly sunshine hours during the full 9 months prior to the month of birth. The linear variable then was split into two categories separated by the median value. Cox regression models showed that more sunshine during the third gestational trimester was associated with lower hazards (HR) of T1D at age 5-9 years in males: HR (95% CI): 0.60 (0.43-0.84), p=0.003. Our results should be considered in the context of evidence-based recommendations to the public about skin protection from the sun.

The association between recent and more distant weight changes before and after the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes has been little researched. In the last 25-30 years, there has been a marked increase in the prevalence of obesity within almost all age groups of the Danish population. The largest increase has been documented in studies based on objective data from total populations, and the latest data show the increase as continuing. The Danish studies show heterogeneity in the development of the obesity epidemic within various birth cohorts over time. This indicates a need for further etiological research, not only into behavioural factors but also into early life factors that may explain some of this pattern.

To summarize the available evidence on the effects of replacing SSBs with beverage alternatives on long-term health outcomes. We systematically retrieved studies from six electronic databases from inception to November 2013. Prospective cohort studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effects of substituting beverage alternatives for SSBs on long-term health outcomes in both children and adults were included. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network 50 methodology checklists. We examined correlations between intrapair differences in specific dietary composition and intake of foods and macronutrients in relation to differences in anthropometric phenotypes in a population-based sample of monozygotic twins. Data originated from a cross-sectional study, conducted in 1997-2000, of healthy twin pairs with measured anthropometry and information from food frequency questionnaire supplemented by self-reported weight from 1994 to 2002 and self-reported waist circumference from 2002.
