and a symbolic f... more The article constitutes an attempt at analysing the role of the image of a real
and a symbolic father in Aleksander Wat’s work. The point of the departure is a reflection
upon the issue of avant-garde gesture of breaking off with the past and identity through
a change of a family name from Chwat to Wat. The problem of misunderstanding
resulting from the use of different languages forms the basis of the relationship between
Wat and his father and serves as the background for the proposed interpretation, whose
figure becomes the Tower of Babel. The image which emerges from the analyses of the
poems composed by the author of Buchalteria, and especially from the fragments of
his journal, is one of the “voice of the Father,” tormenting the writer, which has a close
connection with the return of the suppressed Jewish identity.

Rzecz o polskości i rodzinie poety, opublikowana w 1973 roku, będąca zbiorem szkiców, które ukazywały się wcześniej w krajowych i europejskich czasopismach, przygotowana do druku już po śmierci pisarza przez jego żonę, Alicję Stern. Przedmiot zawartych w artykule analiz stanowią nie tylko teksty opublikowane, ale przede wszystkim obszerny archiwalny zbiór materiałów poświęconych Apollinaire’owi, gromadzonych przez Sterna, a także różne formy literackich praktyk, w ramach których Stern dokonywał artystycznych przetworzeń biograficznych rozpoznań dotyczących autora Alkoholi. The article is devoted to a genealogical investigation, undertaken by Anatol Stern, in his attemp... more The article is devoted to a genealogical investigation, undertaken by Anatol Stern, in his attempt to reconstruct the origin story of Guillaume Apollinaire. The effect of his research is a book entitled Dom Apollinaire’a. Rzecz o polskości i rodzinie poety, published in 1973, which is a collection of essays, previously published in Polish and European journals, prepared for publication after the author’s death by his wife, Alicja Stern. The subject of analyses in the paper are not only the published texts but first and foremost an extensive archival collection of materials devoted to Apollinaire, collected by Stern, as well as different forms of literary practices, within which Stern carried out artistic biographical modifications of his findings concerning the author of Alcools. The theoretical perspective adopted for the analysis a wide range of auto/biographical texts here is the concept of life writing. In the course of the study the value of Alicja Stern’s commentary, found in her unpublished memoir, comes centre stage, as it indicates the possibility of a “pseudo-auto-biographical” reading of some of Stern’s texts devoted to Apollinaire. This line of interpretation – exposing the situation of “the other” – opens up the possibility of looking for a ”Maroon-like subject” and places in which Stern’s own situation of “the other” along with various forms of masking his own “interrupted”, “unstable” identity.

This article is an attempt at interpreting the experimental verse of two Warsaw Futurists, Aleksa... more This article is an attempt at interpreting the experimental verse of two Warsaw Futurists, Aleksander Wat's namopaniki and Anatol Stern's romans Peru [A romance of Peru]. A series of analyses, conducted from the perspective of the materiality of language, indicates that the key to the generic status of Wat's verse is to be sought in the concept of metamorphism. Indeed, his namopaniki are best described as metamorphic poems in which the dynamic of transformation gets the better of both their linguistic material and their presumptive subjects. By associating the linguistic experiments of the two Warsaw Futurists, who came from Jewish families, with the situation of ‘being a stranger to one's language’ (Deleuze and Guattari) and Jacques Derrida's chafing at monolingualism, the article argues that Wat's and Stern's early poetic practice represents a turn to ‘minority art’, i.e. a form of discourse subversive of the dominant hierarchies of the ‘majority’ language and literature. Furthermore, the Deleuzian concept of minor literature (littérature mineure) may be used to seek a finer differentiation between the Warsaw Futurist avant-garde and the East or West European models of Futurism and Dadaism.

The reproduction postulates, prevalent in the works of the Polish Futurists and usually placed in the context of vitalism, characteristic of the 1920s, are shown from a biopolitical perspective, emphasizing the intersection of the biological with the political and social horizons. The author attempts to trace especially the political entanglements of the “population project” of the Polish Futurists, which turns out be marked by numerous paradoxes, situating itself between the pronatalist rhetoric typical of nationalist discourse (on the one hand, the discourse promoted by F.T. Marinetti, and on the other, the one formulated in Poland directly after regaining independence) and thinking in terms of a community which starts from the material functions of the body. In this second context, the reproduction postulates are not only an attack on bourgeois morality, but are closely connected with the futurist critique of all social institutions and the state apparatus with its biopolitical dispositions.

Postulaty reprodukcyjne, na szeroką skalę obecne w wystąpieniach polskich futurystów, sytuowane zwykle w obszarze typowego dla lat dwudziestych witalizmu, ukazane zostają w perspektywie biopolitycznej, eksponującej miejsce przecięcia tego, co biologiczne z horyzontem politycznym i społecznym. Autorka próbuje prześledzić zwłaszcza polityczne uwikłania „projektu populacyjnego” polskich futurystów, który wykazuje liczne paradoksy, sytuując się pomiędzy pronatalistyczną retoryką właściwą nacjonalistycznym dyskursom (z jednej strony, tym propagowanym przez F.T. Marinettiego, z drugiej natomiast, konstruowanym w Polsce bezpośrednio po odzyskaniu niepodległości), a myśleniem w kategoriach wspólnoty, rozpoczynającej się od materialnych funkcji ciała. The article is an attempt to interpret the only book published by Jerzy Jankowski, a forerunner o... more The article is an attempt to interpret the only book published by Jerzy Jankowski, a forerunner of Polish futurism who is often overlooked in literary history related to the beginnings of the avant-garde movement. Tram wpopszek ulicy (Tram crossways on the street), published in 1920, is presented in terms of innovative phenomena in Polish and European poetry. Such a point of view reveals its precursory character, despite its passeism repeatedly diagnosed by critics. The key word and the starting point of the analysis is the first word of the title – tram, whose ambiguity makes it not only a sign of a modern city but also a metaphor of the construction of the entire book and its historical location. Further analysis leads to conclusions that, on the one hand, reveal the complicated meaning of the vitalistic futurist concept of life and, on the other, indicate aporias and tensions between symbolism and avant-garde, originality and repetition, materiality and spirituality, as well as aesthetics and the social function of art. These seem to be a hidden dimension of Jankowski’s work.

Key considerations touch on the particular epistemology of writing and the interdisciplinary project of accumulating and organizing knowledge that emerge from the writer’s notes, blurring the boundaries between what is scientific and social, aesthetic and political. These practices are essential for the emergence of a subjective knowledge that is articulated in a variety of ways and finds its particular place in literature.
The article is an attempt at analysing the phenomenon of Dziennik bez samogłosek (Diary without V... more The article is an attempt at analysing the phenomenon of Dziennik bez samogłosek (Diary without Vowels) from the perspective of the text’s materiality. The subject was undertaken as a result of the diary’s Michalina Kmiecik’s new edition which for the first time allows to insight into Wat’s original typescript and into its new reading unmediated by Ola Watowa’s interventions. The reflection’s starting point is a confrontation of the various interpretations and scholarly remarks on the form of Diary without Vowels, all being both possibly different answers to settle the problem of specificity of Wat’s use of the code and to expound the reasons the poet makes such a choice. The analysis of the form ultimately prompts to resolve the issue on the level of Wat’s constant confrontation with the avant-garde. From this perspective the code is seen rather as a peculiar experiment in which lexical material remains in direct connection with (avant-garde in its nature) mistrust to language, an effort to defragment language and passion for destruction.

discussions that took pla... more This issue of Praktyka Teoretyczna is an indirect result of some of the discussions that took place during the three-part conference owe/stare. Materializm w literaturze, sztuce, krytyce (New/Old. Materialism in Literature, Art and Criticism) in Wrocław, Kraków and Łódź in 2018. The main goal of all three sessions was to arrange a space for a productive confrontation between the proponents of various conceptions of materialism” in contemporary criticism, particularly those explicitly interested in the so-called „new materialisms” ( Dolphijn & van de Tuin 2012 Coole & Frost 2010,) and those ascribing to a more openly Marxist tradition. (To a certain extent, we aimed to emphasise and collectively analyse, in very practical terms, the methodological tension described recently by Terry Eagleton [2016] and Slavoj Zizek [2014].) The focus was on literary criticism, art criticism and cul-tural criticism; but,resentations given during the conference touched on a variety of fields, subjects and media.

The essay tries to capture the epistemological status of poetry from the perspective of questions... more The essay tries to capture the epistemological status of poetry from the perspective of questions posed by the economy of literature. Selected theories of poetry-those of Jochen Hörisch, Viktor B. Shklovsky, Jean Baudrillard and Franco Berardi-can be regarded as a kind of "economics of poetry" due to their proposed treatment of the properties of the poetic medium from an economic perspective. In each of these theories, poetry is defined as uneconomical and useless, which, paradoxically, becomes its fundamental condition for existence as a place for breaking the linguistic circulation of signs, a point of resistance against conventionalized communication and automatization of perception, and thus a medium offering unique knowledge about reality.

It focuses on questions concering the specific literary-epistemological project that emerges from various types of texts the writer had created. In the present study, the writer’s entire output – literary and cultural – as well as the voluminous archive collected by the author of A Reading of Ashes [Odczytanie popiołów] are given much reflection. The archive (repeatedly used as the main theme in his prose and poetry) as a manifestation of predilection for “retaining” and “collecting”, simultaneously becomes the most significant context of interpretation of his works. The title archeologist and gravedigger are not only the main characters of the writer’s many poems and short stories but, in Ficowski’s works, the gravedigging and archeological motifs function as complex metaphor of recollection and cognition, linguistic processes and processes of comprehension, setting hermeneutic ...
Interpretation of Metaphisics – the novel written by Lech Majewski, is the subject matter of theo... more Interpretation of Metaphisics – the novel written by Lech Majewski, is the subject matter of theoretical, aesthetic and antropological considerations. Synthesis of arts: literature, film, painting and theatre, which occur in the novel, opens a perspective of intertextuality and provokes questions about ekphrasis, varied materials, ways of experience mediated by dispositives and reflections on humans among other problems. The crucial point in both: Majewski’s novel and this dissertation, is a triptych painted by Hieronymus Bosch – The Garden of Earthly Delight, which gradually annexes the featured world – becomes a basic figure in trying to show, how the aesthetization of reality brings Wolfgang Welsch’s cahegory of an(a)esthetics.

The subject was undertaken as a result of the diary’s Michalina Kmiecik’s new edition which for the first time allows to insight into Wat’s original typescript and into its new reading unmediated by Ola Watowa’s interventions. The reflection’s starting point is a confrontation of the various interpretations and scholarly remarks on the form of Diary without Vowels, all being both possibly different answers to settle the problem of specificity of Wat’s use of the code and to expound the reasons the poet makes such a choice. The analysis of the form ultimately prompts to resolve the issue on the level of Wat’s constant confrontation with the avant-garde. From this perspective the code is seen rather as a peculiar experiment in which lexical material remains in direct connection with (avant-garde in its nature) mistrust to language, an effort to defragment language and passion for destruction.

discussions that took pla... more This issue of Praktyka Teoretyczna is an indirect result of some of the discussions that took place during the three-part conference owe/stare. Materializm w literaturze, sztuce, krytyce (New/Old. Materialism in Literature, Art and Criticism) in Wrocław, Kraków and Łódź in 2018. The main goal of all three sessions was to arrange a space for a productive confrontation between the proponents of various conceptions of materialism” in contemporary criticism, particularly those explicitly interested in the so-called „new materialisms” ( Dolphijn & van de Tuin 2012 Coole & Frost 2010,) and those ascribing to a more openly Marxist tradition. (To a certain extent, we aimed to emphasise and collectively analyse, in very practical terms, the methodological tension described recently by Terry Eagleton [2016] and Slavoj Zizek [2014].) The focus was on literary criticism, art criticism and cul-tural criticism; but,resentations given during the conference touched on a variety of fields, subjects and media.

W tytułowej metaforze „o-mówienia” ujęte zostają specyficzne peryfrastyczne właściwości kolejnych wystąpień i tekstów Zarzyckiej, które nieustannie „krążą po orbicie” języka, sztuki, sytuacji artystycznej i życia artystki. Interpretacji poddane zostają przede wszystkim „performanse mówione”, „rysunki pisane” oraz tworzone przez Zarzycką zeszyty – różne działania artystyczne, które łączy narracyjny i autobiograficzny żywioł, w specyficzny sposób związane z cielesnością głosu i pisma odręcznego, wprawione w transmedialne „krążenie” pomiędzy pismem, dźwiękiem i obrazem.

The essay tries to capture the epistemological status of poetry from the perspective of questions... more The essay tries to capture the epistemological status of poetry from the perspective of questions posed by the economy of literature. Selected theories of poetry-those of Jochen Hörisch, Viktor B. Shklovsky, Jean Baudrillard and Franco Berardi-can be regarded as a kind of "economics of poetry" due to their proposed treatment of the properties of the poetic medium from an economic perspective. In each of these theories, poetry is defined as uneconomical and useless, which, paradoxically, becomes its fundamental condition for existence as a place for breaking the linguistic circulation of signs, a point of resistance against conventionalized communication and automatization of perception, and thus a medium offering unique knowledge about reality.

It focuses on questions concering the specific literary-epistemological project that emerges from various types of texts the writer had created. In the present study, the writer’s entire output – literary and cultural – as well as the voluminous archive collected by the author of A Reading of Ashes [Odczytanie popiołów] are given much reflection. The archive (repeatedly used as the main theme in his prose and poetry) as a manifestation of predilection for “retaining” and “collecting”, simultaneously becomes the most significant context of interpretation of his works. The title archeologist and gravedigger are not only the main characters of the writer’s many poems and short stories but, in Ficowski’s works, the gravedigging and archeological motifs function as complex metaphor of recollection and cognition, linguistic processes and processes of comprehension, setting hermeneutic ...
Interpretation of Metaphisics – the novel written by Lech Majewski, is the subject matter of theo... more Interpretation of Metaphisics – the novel written by Lech Majewski, is the subject matter of theoretical, aesthetic and antropological considerations. Synthesis of arts: literature, film, painting and theatre, which occur in the novel, opens a perspective of intertextuality and provokes questions about ekphrasis, varied materials, ways of experience mediated by dispositives and reflections on humans among other problems. The crucial point in both: Majewski’s novel and this dissertation, is a triptych painted by Hieronymus Bosch – The Garden of Earthly Delight, which gradually annexes the featured world – becomes a basic figure in trying to show, how the aesthetization of reality brings Wolfgang Welsch’s cahegory of an(a)esthetics.

and a symbolic father in Aleksander Wat’s work. The point of the departure is a reflection
upon the issue of avant-garde gesture of breaking off with the past and identity through
a change of a family name from Chwat to Wat. The problem of misunderstanding
resulting from the use of different languages forms the basis of the relationship between
Wat and his father and serves as the background for the proposed interpretation, whose
figure becomes the Tower of Babel. The image which emerges from the analyses of the
poems composed by the author of Buchalteria, and especially from the fragments of
his journal, is one of the “voice of the Father,” tormenting the writer, which has a close
connection with the return of the suppressed Jewish identity.

Marinetti, and on the other, the one formulated in Poland directly after regaining independence) and thinking in terms of a community which starts from the material functions of the body. In this second context, the reproduction postulates are not only an attack on bourgeois morality, but are closely connected with the futurist critique of all social institutions and the state apparatus with its biopolitical dispositions.

Postulaty reprodukcyjne, na szeroką skalę obecne w wystąpieniach polskich futurystów, sytuowane zwykle w obszarze typowego dla lat dwudziestych witalizmu, ukazane zostają w perspektywie biopolitycznej, eksponującej miejsce przecięcia tego, co biologiczne z horyzontem politycznym i społecznym. Autorka próbuje prześledzić zwłaszcza polityczne uwikłania „projektu populacyjnego” polskich futurystów, który wykazuje liczne paradoksy, sytuując się pomiędzy pronatalistyczną retoryką właściwą nacjonalistycznym dyskursom (z jednej strony, tym propagowanym przez F.T. Marinettiego, z drugiej natomiast, konstruowanym w Polsce bezpośrednio po odzyskaniu niepodległości), a myśleniem w kategoriach wspólnoty, rozpoczynającej się od materialnych funkcji ciała. W tym drugim kontekście, reprodukcyjne postulaty są nie tylko atakiem na burżuazyjną moralność, ale ściśle wiążą się z futurystyczną krytyką wszelkich instytucji społecznych i aparatu państwa z jego biopolitycznymi dyspozycjami.

Further analysis leads to conclusions that, on the one hand, reveal the complicated meaning of the vitalistic futurist concept of life and, on the other, indicate aporias and tensions between symbolism and avant-garde, originality and repetition, materiality and spirituality, as well as aesthetics and the social function of art. These seem to be a hidden dimension of Jankowski’s work.
