On 28 April 1920, less than three years after the Bolshevik takeover in St Petersburg, the 11 th Red Army entered Baku and raised the red flag over a city known for a century as the Russian gate to the East. For the Bolsheviks, Baku was not just another city inherited from the fallen Tsarist Empire but was a bastion from where the revolution would set the East ablaze. The fallen empire's immediate neighbours, Iran and the Ottoman Empire, were entangled in the political turmoil of change and revolution, and from Southeast Asia the echoes resounded of the anti-British Indian nationalist uprising. For the Bolsheviks, expanding the revolution to the West and to East Asia became essential to safeguard the revolution at home. In September 1920, it was with this mission in mind that the Communist International (Comintern) called for the First Congress of the People of the East to be held in Baku. In his opening address, Zinoviev, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Comintern appealed to the hundreds of delegates , the majority of them Muslims from Asia and Africa, as well as to the people from the Tsarist Empire's colonies in Central Asia and the Caucasus, to join the Russian revolution and wage a jihad against British imperialism.

Настоящая монография посвящена трагическим событиям, происшедшим в марте-июле 1918 г. в городе Шемахе и селениях Шемахинского уезда, когда армяно-большевистскими вооруженными бандами были убиты
более 18 тысяч мирных жителей-азербайджанцев, в том числе женщин,
детей и стариков. Был полностью разрушен и сожжен до основания один
из древнейших городов Азербайджана Шемаха, со всеми жилыми кварталами и 13 мечетями. Были разгромлены и сожжены все гражданские объекты города, разграблено и уничтожено имущество, при надлежащее азербайджанскому населению. С марта по июль 1918 г. погромам подверглись
110 азербайджанских селений Шемахинского уезда, разрушены и сожжены дома и хозяйства, мечети, гражданские объекты, сады, посевы и т.д.
В монографии прослеживается хронология этих событий, раскрываются
цели и причины, стоящие за организацией азербайджанских погромов,
указываются роль и мотивация отдельных национально-политических
сил, участвовавших в погромах.
В книге отдельно рассматривается деятельность Чрезвычайной Следственной Комиссии, созданной Азербайджанским Правительством 15
июля 1918 г. для расследования фактов насилия, погромов и мародерства,
учиненных в отношении мусульманского населения в пределах всего
Кавказа с начала Первой мировой войны.
В книгу также включены подробный информационно-вспомогательный
аппарат и исторические фотографии, приложены план города Шемахи и
карта Шемахинского уезда 1918 г. со специальным содержанием.
Книга рассчитана на специалистов и широкий круг читателей.

The present edition is a concise version of The Documented Pogroms of the Muslims. Guba. April-May 1918. Collection of Files, Baku, 2010, 552 pages. Published with the support of the Ministry of National Security, the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Documents included in the collection were drafted and compiled by the Ad Hoc Investigation Commission established by the Government of Azerbaijan in July 1918 with a view to examining the facts of violence, pogroms and loot towards the Muslim residents and their property all over Transcaucasia as of the beginning of World War 1. The present collection comprises records of The Devastation of the Town of Guba and Villages of Guba Uyezd Case. The records shed the light on tragic events of April-May in Guba Uyezd (name for administrative districts in Czarist
Russia) when more than 4 thousand civilians, women, children and elderly ones among them, were brutally massacred, hundreds of villages, households, mosques and public facilities leveled and plundered, assets of the Muslim population of the Azerbaijani, Lezghin, Tat, Avar and other origins looted and destroyed. The three sections of the book present witness testimonies of residents of the town of Guba and adjacent villages of Guba Uyezd recreating the chronology of Muslims’ pogroms,
verdicts by rural communities of the Uyezd with numbers of people slain and slaughtered, the size of damages inflicted, the names of villages plundered and devastated, etc. Revealing the details of criminal offences committed by the Armenian
militants, the records hereby provided clearly indicate that the events in Guba were a part and parcel of large-scale action plans and operations by the Armenian
nationalists aiming at maximum possible decrease of the indigenous Muslim population in all Azerbaijani regions viewed as potential territories for their desired Armenian state.
The Collection also includes the historic essay re-edited by the author with detailed reference information and photographs. The map of Guba Uyezd as of 1918 with special comments enclosed.

Настоящее издание является сокращенным вариантом сборника документов «Куба. Апрель-май  1918 г. Мусульманские погромы в документах».  Баку, 2010 г., 552 стр.
  Документы, вошедшие в сборник  были собраны и составлены Чрезвычайной Следственной Комиссией, созданной Азербайджанским Правительством в июле 1918 г., для расследования фактов насилия,  погромов и мародерства, произведенных в отношении мусульманского на-селения и их имущества в пределах  всего Закавказья с начала первой мировой войны.              В данный сборник вошли материалы ЧСК по следственному делу «О разгроме г. Кубы и селений Кубинского уезда», которые  позволяют рассмотреть трагические события в апреле-мае 1918 г. в Кубинском уезде, когда  в течении нескольких дней были зверски убиты более    4-х тысяч мирных жителей, в том числе женщин, детей и стариков, разрушены и сожжены сотни се¬лений, домов, мечетей, гражданских объектов, разграблено и уничтожено имущество, при¬надлежащее всему мусульманскому населению – азербайджанцам, лезгинам, татам, аварам и т.д. В трех разделах сборника собраны свидетельские показания жителей г. Кубы и селений Кубинского уезда,  создающие хронологию начала и развития мусульманских погромов, приговоры сельских обществ уезда, позволяющие установить наиболее точные цифры о числе пострадавших, пол, возраст, имена убитых и истерзанных людей, размеры нанесенных убытков, названия сожженных, разгромленных и разоренных селений, и т.д. Раскрывая в деталях преступные деяния армянских формирований, документы сборника  свидетельствуют о том, что ку¬бин¬ские события были составной частью более масштабных операций и планов армянских на-циона¬листов, стремящихся к максимальному уменьшению численности мусульманского населения во всех азербайджанских регионах, которые они рассматривали как потенциальные территории для своего будущего государства.
В сборник также включены научный очерк, посвященный истории вопроса,  подробный информационно-вспомогательный аппарат и фотографии. Приложена карта  Кубинского уезда 1918 г. со специальным содержанием.

This book-album is a part of a series of materials of the Extraordinary Investigation Commission (EIC) which was organized by the Government of the Republic
of Azerbaijan in July 1918 to investigate the violence and massacares carried out against the Muslim population and their property in the entire Transcaucasia
since the beginning of World War I. The book-album includes the rarest photographs taken and collected by the EIC which depict the tragic consequences of
the events in March and July 1918 in city’s of Baku, Shamakhi and villages of the Shamakhi and Goychay counties, where rampaging Armenian/Bolshevik armed
forces killed tens of thousands of Azerbaijani civilians and destroyed architectural monuments, mosques, residential areas, entire villages, civil and commercial
properties, schools, and hospitals owned by Muslims. About 100 photos of the EIC were sent to France with the Azerbaijani delegation to the Paris Peace Conference
and were presented to the heads of many foreign countries there. None of these photos could be found in the country, and for over 90 years they were
considered to be lost. 102 photos were found in foreign archives and presented to the author of the album-book, Solmaz Rustamova-Tohidi, PhD, Professor of
History. The publication also includes EIC documents relevant to the photos.
