It has been discovered that the spread of TGA has been carried out along different paths. Moreover, grooved stones along each of these transmission routes can be distinguished by their unique decorative and morphological characteristics. The aim of this paper is to clarify the circumstances and the date of appearance of the first TGS, localization of their initial areas, and identification of their respective decorative and morphological features. This is a necessary condition for identifying the starting points of the subsequent transit carriers of TGS' tradition and tracing the directions of interaction in Eurasia during the end of the Pleistocene – the first half of the Holocene period using TGS as markers. The initial database was formed on the basis of the scientific publications on the Near East. The following is a presentation of the analytical review of at least 200 grooved stones and 80 sites in their starting area in south-western Asia. The analysis used a systematic approach with emphasis on chronology, environment, petrography, morphology, functional-typological data where such were available, and TGS’ decor. But first of all, the study pays attention to the distribution of TGS and their cultural and chronological boundaries in this region. For this purpose, it was performed the mapping of findings in two chronological levels – up to 8000 thousand BCE and after, with the marking of decorated products. The results enabled us to detect that the geographical spread of grooved artefacts of this type is limited in the Near East to the area of central Anatolia and Fertile Crescent, with a boundary along the desert-steppes. At least three concentrations can be clearly distinguished: the Levant, Zagros Mountains, and Upper Mesopotamia - central Anatolia, where the products are characterized by specific features of decorative and morphological design and in one case (Levant) an additional observed petrographic specificity. Currently, the earliest cases are recorded in Early Natufian contexts in the Levant and in Epipalaeolithic contexts of the Anatolian plateau since the 13th millennium cal BCE. Thus, one can confidently state that the introduction of TGS in the Middle East is generally linked to the Epipalaeolithic sites (Natufian, Harifian, and Western Zarzian) and is definitely associated with hunter-gatherers. The heyday of TGS falls on the PPNA and lasts to the beginning of the early Bronze Age, when they finally disappear.

We know of similar artefacts from northern Africa. Hundreds of TGA have also been found in northern Eurasia. Some common traits were found in specimens from far apart territories, such as the non-abrasive heat-resistant nature of the raw materials, specificity of fragmentation without any signs of physical impact, the standard size of the grooves, association with a specific type of landscape, the similar economic level of the societies with which the items are associated, and use-wear marks in the grooves. Based on these regularities we can speak of a single main function for these artefacts which support the earlier reconstruction of R.L. and R.S. Solecki, suggesting that grooved stones were used for straightening cane and reed shafts under heating. Other evidence and traces that have been identified on the surface of TGA outside the groove could be associated with a variety of additional functions.

The author focused in particular on the history of the Boborykin culture and the interdependence of such events as the Black Sea salinization crisis and the appearance of grooved stones of the Lower Dnieper type in the east of the steppe belt of Eurasia.

The article analyses cross-grooved tools made of stone and clay (“utyuzhki”, «grooved stones», «pierres à rainures», «shaft-straighteners», «polissoirs», «poliroval’niki», «polissoirs à rainures»), which were widespread in steppe and forest-steppe zones of Eurasia in X – II millennia BC. Complex of geographic, landscape, topographic, economic, petrographic, morphological and use-wear observations allow to presume that “utyuzhki” not only served for making of shaft of arrows and darts from cane, but also had important innovative character in the life support system.

The article analyses origination and functioning with regard to one of the stone inventory categories called “utyuzhki”. The obtained results display that a tradition of making the “utyuzhki ” originated in the 10th-9th mill. BC in the proto-Neolithic complexes of the Near East still oriented to the economy of appropriation, wherefrom the tradition spread into the Eurasian territory. During the 10th-2nd mill. BC the «utyuzhki» revealed themselves in the material of some fifty cultures and cultural types, steadily interrelating with economies of appropriation. The «utyuzhki» were accompanied by stone industry of geometrical plates. Their existence was strictly determined by the steppe and forest-steppe conditions. When, upon development of farming and stockbreeding, the niche proved to be occupied, the «utyuzhki» vanished.

В качестве такового реконструировано запорное рыболовство, обеспечивавшее относительную стабиль- ность жизни и, как следствие, оседлость населения / In this work, the author set out to test the procedure for studying the size of dwellings from the perspective of the household using the Sosnovy Ostrov culture of the Late Neolithic as an example. This implies considering the house collective as being maximally adapted to local environmental conditions and as being optimal in size for the implementation of a specific type of economic activity associated with the household. The study covers the southern taiga zone of the Tobol basin area (the border region between the Urals and Western Siberia) in the first half of 5th millennium Cal ВС. In the course of the systematic source analysis, the author employed the methods commonly used in natural science, geography and the humanities: topographic, hypsometric, planigraphic, comparative ethnographic, etc. It was found that the dwellings of the Sosnovy Ostrov culture were large in sizes (60– 125 m2) as compared to the dwellings of other Neolithic cultures in the Trans-Urals. In addition, a pattern in the location of villages relative to the water network was shown. They are situated close to lake isthmuses and wellhead capes (located downstream of a tributary mouth). The analysis of settlements revealed in-depth long-term dwellings, as well as light structures and utility pits located inside and outside of dwellings. This fact, along with the material distribution, suggests the sedentary lifestyle of the population. A settled way of life in the context of appropriating economy is possible only if the population possess a highly productive skill. The modelling of the situation, drawing on the ethnographic data available for these territories, indicates that the population was engaged in weir fishing. This conclusion is consistent with paleoclimatic reconstructions and the topography of the settlements. In addition, it is indirectly confirmed by a large number of woodworking tools in the stone inventory. The construction and maintenance of a weir require the coordinated work of a large team, which correlates with the size of the Sosnovy Ostrov dwellings. The presence of a common hearth in the dwellings suggests that the Sosnovy Ostrov households were built on the principles of undivided authority and existed in the form of large (extended) families. The study results indicate a high informative potential of a dwelling when considered from the perspective of a household adapted to the specific conditions.
The article tackles the problem of area being cultured by people, its transformation from something “outer”, “alien” into “home”, “familiar”. The ethnographic material of the Ugorian and Eastern Slavic peoples/communities allows to single out the stages of structuralizing the space, which is revealed through the rituals, connected with the inhabited territory and the concept of home, its entrance – the threshold, structure, the floor – the ceiling and the hearth. The author asserts the idea of a significant prolongation of the tradition to domesticate space by the example of the analysis of the peculiarities of the archaeological material distribution and the redundant (from the rational point of view) construction details of the 2 short-term seasonal dwellings of the late Stone Age in the Tobol region.

The work deals with materials of a multilayer settlement "VIII punkt" (YuAO 18) located on the southern bank of the Andreevsky lake near Tyumen. Basing on disintegrated fragments of vessels marking a layer or the bottom of structures the author Identified the Poludensky, Sosnovoostrovsky, and Boboryikinsky complexes as well as materials lying, at the foundation of the whole band of culture beddings which pottery ornamentation was marked with patterns made through drawing out against comb background or drawing out with a comb punch. Over the layer with the Boboryikinsky ceramics, one can clearly fix a layer containing, in the author's opinion, the Late Poludensky pottery of the Early Eneolithic.

The methodology is based on a step-by-step cross-referencing analysis of raw materials, technological and morphological characteristics of stone artifacts. The multilayer settlement Shaitanskoe 4–6 stone tools assemblage (the Kirovgrad district, Sverdlovsk Oblast) served as the main resource for the analysis. Main stages of the site’s populating correlated with the Eneolithic and the Bronze Age (Cherkaskul culture). Arrowheads were chosen as the key category of artifacts. This choice was based on both the large number of these artifacts (more than 100 items) and their fairly reliable cultural and chronological verification by the well-known interments and single-layer sites of the Urals and the adjacent territories. The Eneolithic flaking technique demonstrated a pronounced variability of tools. Pressure f...

Other evidence and traces that have been identified on the surface of TGA outside the groove could be assoc...

Grooved stones/"Утюжки"
appearance at Epipalaeolithic sites in the Near East from where they spread to the Mediterranean
coasts of Africa and Europe, but mostly to Northern Eurasia (the steppe, forest-steppe, and semi-desert
zones). It has been discovered that the spread of TGA has been carried out along different paths.
Moreover, grooved stones along each of these transmission routes can be distinguished by their unique
decorative and morphological characteristics.
The aim of this paper is to clarify the circumstances and the date of appearance of the first TGS,
localization of their initial areas, and identification of their respective decorative and morphological
features. This is a necessary condition for identifying the starting points of the subsequent transit
carriers of TGS' tradition and tracing the directions of interaction in Eurasia during the end of the
Pleistocene – the first half of the Holocene period using TGS as markers.
The initial database was formed on the basis of the scientific publications on the Near East. The
following is a presentation of the analytical review of at least 200 grooved stones and 80 sites in their
starting area in south-western Asia. The analysis used a systematic approach with emphasis on
chronology, environment, petrography, morphology, functional-typological data where such were
available, and TGS’ decor. But first of all, the study pays attention to the distribution of TGS and their
cultural and chronological boundaries in this region. For this purpose, it was performed the mapping
of findings in two chronological levels – up to 8000 thousand BCE and after, with the marking of
decorated products.
The results enabled us to detect that the geographical spread of grooved artefacts of this type is
limited in the Near East to the area of central Anatolia and Fertile Crescent, with a boundary along the
desert-steppes. At least three concentrations can be clearly distinguished: the Levant, Zagros
Mountains, and Upper Mesopotamia - central Anatolia, where the products are characterized by
specific features of decorative and morphological design and in one case (Levant) an additional
observed petrographic specificity. Currently, the earliest cases are recorded in Early Natufian contexts
in the Levant and in Epipalaeolithic contexts of the Anatolian plateau since the 13th millennium cal
BCE. Thus, one can confidently state that the introduction of TGS in the Middle East is generally
linked to the Epipalaeolithic sites (Natufian, Harifian, and Western Zarzian) and is definitely
associated with hunter-gatherers. The heyday of TGS falls on the PPNA and lasts to the beginning of
the early Bronze Age, when they finally disappear.
Irina V. Usacheva's research is devoted to sculptural images of the Siberian «utyuzki» («shaft straighteners»). The review encompasses both items already known and those found in the old collections examined by the author. Sculptural «utyuzki» («shaft straighteners») is an unique, but not isolated phenomenon. Their appearance is connected with the dynamics of their semantics.
The article analyses origination and functioning with regard to one of the stone inventory categories called
“utyuzhki”. When, upon development of farming and stockbreeding, the niche proved to be occupied, the «utyuzhki» vanished.

ность жизни и, как следствие, оседлость населения / In this work, the author set out to test the procedure for studying the size of dwellings from the perspective of the household using the Sosnovy Ostrov culture of the Late Neolithic as an example. This implies considering the house collective as being maximally adapted to local environmental conditions and as being optimal in size for the
implementation of a specific type of economic activity associated with the household. It was found that the dwellings of the Sosnovy Ostrov culture were large in sizes (60–
125 m2) as compared to the dwellings of other Neolithic cultures in the Trans-Urals. A settled way of life in the context of
appropriating economy is possible only if the population possess a highly productive skill. The presence of a common hearth in the dwellings suggests that the
Sosnovy Ostrov households were built on the principles of undivided authority and existed in the form of large (extended) families. The study results indicate a high informative potential of a dwelling when considered from the perspective of a household adapted to the specific conditions.

Indicator characteristics of Sosnovoostrovskaya pottery are defined as a combination of a number of morphological
and decorative features. Besides, the extensive use of walking comb among them are form of vessels
