In doing so, we present a case study on laypeople’s perception of risk related to the handling of hazardous substances in their direct living environment, which combines different levels of the integrative risk perception framework in a network estimated with survey data from Dutch inhabitants (N = 1,026). Additionally, we examine the impact of a form of personal relevance by comparing cities (i.e., Zaandam nearby a chemical cluster [n = 457] and Deventer with less chemical companies [n = 569]). Results showed how, in the context of handling hazardous substances, 1) the different levels of the integrative risk perception framework are interrelated, 2) this approach can help prioritize levels of the framework and specific elements for future research (i.e., cognitive-affective factors appear to be relati...

Despite this recognition, the present regional implementation of this governmental flood reduction strategy has called for further discussion. That water shortage is an issue, is not recognized by all parties, which has caused the discussion on implemen-tation to be further elaborated. To promote insight into these discussions, MNP experts examined the perceptions of the relevant stakeholders (governmental and non-governmental) in flood risks and possible measures. Issues of water shortage were also discussed. The analysis focuses on the decision-making process, with such topics as: what governance is applied and how do decisions come about? For similar projects, it is recommended to determine the controversy from the perception of risks and measures. This could lead to the choice of a strategy for governance, which may enhance th...

Nevertheless, there are very few studies that show why local planning authorities do or do not systematically use spatial planning in advance to mitigate flood risks. This paper explores flood reduction strategies in local planning practices in the Netherlands. It also explores why spatial planning was or

In particular, the elaboration of GIS ¿risk-maps¿ has been recognized as functional to two objectives: connecting decision-makers and stakeholders during decisional processes and communicating risk to non-experts audiences. In both cases, the use GIS results in increased transparency, as it gives clear ground and evidences to risk-related decisions. In order to elaborate on these findings and to verify the current use of GIS within European decisional processes, we have begun a comparative study between the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. Their land-use planning practices (LUP) are explored with respect to the risk of major accident as derived from the EU Directive Seveso II. The contribution and the role of GIS within decisional processes is analysed, and recommendations for further developments are discussed
