She was one of the progenitors of the UK’s first music technology course at York in 1986. Her interest in audio started with a visit to WOR radio and television in NYC when she was 11. After this she was hooked, and spent much of her free time studying audio, radio, synthesizers, and loudspeakers, and even managed to build some! She studied electronics at Kent (uk) doing her BSc and PhD there from 1974 to 1980. During her PhD study she became interested in A/D conversion and worked on a sigma-delta approach, but had to give it up to concentrate on her Thesis topic of designing a DSP processor. Spatial audio reproduction using loudspeakers can enhance teleconferencing applications by increasing the perceptual realism or telepresence, of participants' interactions. However, it is critical that any additional perceptual realism afforded by spatial audio does not compromise the perceived performance of the telecommunications in terms of participants' understanding of the words being conveyed. Formal subjective testing methods are used to verify that the spatial reproduction of speech does not compromise perceived performance relative to nonspatialized reproduction. Indeed, significant improvements in the performance as perceived by listeners have been found. Additional tests identify apparent discrepancies between which method permits the most accurate localization and which has the highest perceived performance.

ABSTRACT Screened rooms are used for both radiated emission tests and immunity tests. The data obtained from such tests are influenced by the size and shape of the room as well as by the position in the room of the equipment being tested. The test results will be reliable only at frequencies where the mode density inside the room is greater than a defined minimum. This mode density depends on both the frequency and the size of the room. Methods of increasing the mode density are therefore sought after so that the screened room can be used at lower frequencies without increasing the size of the room. The method of increasing the mode density described uses phase reflection gratings on the walls of the screened room to produce diffuse reflections. These gratings are constructed from sequences of integers which represent the depths of the gratings. The authors describe the use of binary sequences whose auto-correlation is zero. They assume that sequences with this property, which work well as sound diffusers, will also work well for the present purposes. In order to decide which sequences work best it would be useful to have some measure which would predict the increase in modes obtainable for each particular sequence. The authors describe such a measure and also provide verification that this measure does in fact give a valid indication of the increase in mode density inside the screened room

It is shown how the frequency response of the sound from a monitoring loudspeaker in a control room is affected by the presence of specular or diffuse early reflections. The effect of specular and diffuse early reflections on the frequency response described by means of a simple theoretical model. Simulated results are presented and the results discussed.

Concatenating individual diffusers to form larger ones narrows their diffusion patterns into specific directions. A solution is proposed using the modulation of two orthogonal diffusion structures with binary sequences to achieve the desired diffusion pattern. The technique results in large-area diffusion structures which do not suffer from having narrowed diffusion patterns. They also have an extended frequency range and can be implemented easily using existing diffusers.
