Tom Griffin
I am an Assistant Prof. at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University in Toronto. I recently completed a Phd. student at the University of Waterloo, Ontario. My current research interest concerns the experience of immigrants in the Toronto area who have hosted friends and relatives from overseas, particularly in regards to their sense of integration. Hosting can inspire new interactions with the local community, in addition because they are shared with those with whom there is a close relationship levels of satisfaction and sense of enjoyment may be enhanced. The hosting experience may impact the behaviour of immigrants on an ongoing basis, creating new routines, networks, and knowledge.
There are potential opportunities for destination marketers and integration agencies to partner. Encouraging and facilitating immigrants to host could lead to improved integration, as well as enriched experiences for visitors, and increased awareness of the destination in the immigrants' home country.
I have worked in tourism marketing and research since 2004, primarily for Tourism Toronto as Manager of Research for four years directly prior to returning to study. I sat on the board of TTRA Canada for two years leaving in 2010 to focus on my studies. I have a Masters in Tourism and Sustainability from the University of the West of England where I conducted a discourse analysis on volunteer tourism providers and returned participants. I have a BA(Hons) degree from the University of East London in International Development where I participated in a semester exchange with the American University of Cairo. Here I completed a dissertation on the cultural roles of Cairo's five star hotels.
