Anarchisten waren im Kaiserreich und teilweise auch noch in der Weimarer der permanenten Kontrolle und Willkür der politischen Polizei ausgesetzt. Hinzu kam die scharfe politische Ausgrenzung durch Sozialdemokraten und Kommunisten, die Anarchisten nicht als politische Gegner, sondern als Feinde behandelten. Selbst Rosa Luxemburg schrieb vom Anarchismus als der "konterrevolutionären Ideologie des Lumpenproletariats."

The historic impact of anarcho-syndicalism as an autonomous current within the German workers’ movement lasted approximately 40 years. On a national scale, the Free Workers’ Union of Germany (FAUD), as the most influential organisation of this kind, appears as a marginalised association on the periphery of the labour movement. Only during the years 1919 to 1922/23 the FAUD asserted itself temporarily as an influential factor at shop floor levels in some regions of Germany. Once reaching a membership of more than 120,000 in the first years of the Weimar Republic, its membership substantially declined to only 4,307 in 1932, compared to 3.5 million Social Democrats in the Allgemeiner Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund.
