'Correspondances - corrispondenze', è il titolo che il maestro Erio Carnevali dà alla sua nuova selezione di lavori, ma è anche un leitmotiv che si può associare a tutta la sua lunga ricerca come pittore.
Da sempre Carnevali, fin dall'intitolazione delle sue personali, pone come essenziale per comprendere la sua opera concetti e immagini simboliche che cavalcano quel territorio liminale tra diversi campi dell'attività umana - 'Suono Giallo', 'Visibile Invisibile', 'Presenze inafferrabili', 'Die Emotion der Farbe' -, dove meglio le cose si confondono, perdono i loro connotati più banali e corrivi per poter quindi rilucere nella loro natura ultima.
Come si comprende leggendo a fondo la poesia di Baudelaire, chiamata direttamente in causa a commentare questa esposizione, non sí tratta soltanto di un gioco combinatorio tra le varie forme d'intelligenza umana, tra la poesia e la musica, la pittura e l'architettura, in cui esaurire le specificità di ciascun linguaggio in un magma esistenziale in cui anche la singola sensibilità si perde, ma di cercare per l'appunto l'essenza delle cose, la loro verità, che si nasconde dietro alla moltitudine di forme e livelli del reale.

Through the analysis of some woodblocks deriving from prophetic editions by the Ferrarese printer-publisher Vittorio Baldini (post 1575-1618), and in particular of the woodblocks used for the illustrations of the pseudo-Joachimite Vaticinia de Summis Pontificibus, the paper discusses the relationship between these publications and other widespread, cheap print products, and also which role such products played in the catalogue of a tipografo between the late sixteenth and the early seventeenth century. Moreover, the paper aims to verify the category of ‘popular’ with respect to the collection of woodblocks of the Galleria Estense of Modena.
If recent scholarship, for instance on the Remondini press in Bassano, has contributed to redefine the concept of ‘popular production’ as indeed ‘printing for all’, such an interpretation has not yet been verified with respect to particular sectors of the early modern book production, above all that of prophetic texts, and, second, to the contemporary phenomenon of official printers. A brief overview on the printed tradition of the Vaticinia editions between fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, still lacking from the scholarly literature, will contribute to interpret Baldini’s publications as pitched at the more learned within the contemporary audience.
The argument is illustrated through new discoveries on the iconography of the Vaticinia and on the migrations of people and things from a centre to another of the Este Duchy following the devolution of Ferrara in 1598, as well as through comparisons with material still preserved at the Galleria Estense (for instance the woodblocks of Lichtenberger’s Pronosticatio of 1492) and some parallels with the contemporary production of printer-publishers who engaged with both widespread, cheap print products and prestigious editions.
