Inspectional Services Unit The Inspectional Services Unit is responsible for evaluating the operation of the Division, as well as periodic inspections of facilities, vehicles, equipment, records, personnel and investigative procedures. The Inspectional Services Unit is charged with reviewing current Division-wide operations, practices, policies and procedures against mandatory and non-mandatory CALEA, (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) standards. This review ensures that any identified deficiencies are addressed accordingly to satisfy the standard, and to make certain the Division will continue to operate efficiently in order to maintain its prestigious accredited status. About Accreditation The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), Inc. was created in 1979 to develop a set of law enforcement standards and to establish and administer an accreditation process through which law enforcement agencies could demonstrate voluntarily that they meet professionally-recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery. The re-accreditation process takes place every three years, and incorporates a thorough review of written materials, interviews and site visits are conducted by the CALEA on-site assessment team. Additionally, all Division policy and procedures, management, administration, operations, and personnel structure and process are examined for compliance with CALEA standards. The Rhode Island State Police Accreditation Unit, formed in 1992, maintains the Division's accreditation status. This is an on-going project for an accredited law enforcement agency and requires constant monitoring and periodic updating of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with internationally accepted law enforcement accreditation standards. More information on the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. and the accreditation process are available on CALEA's web site. 2021 Public Information Session As part of the 2021 CALEA reaccreditation assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session.
