The PAPAL RECOGNITION OF THE THE FOUNDING OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NAGYSZOMBAT (TRNAVA) IN 1635.
... more The PAPAL RECOGNITION OF THE THE FOUNDING OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NAGYSZOMBAT (TRNAVA) IN 1635.
It is a cornerstone of Hungarian historiography that the foundation of the University of Nagyszombat in 1635 was merely approved by the Emperor. Pope Urban VIII refused to confirm it because of the lack of a medical and legal faculty. The present study establishes that, from the side of the Apostolic See and thus also from the side of canon law, recognition was granted by prior authorization to the foundation of the University of Nagyszombat (Trnava) by Archbishop Peter Pázmány in 1635. It turns out that the failure to obtain immediate papal confirmation of the foundation of the university on 12 May 1635 was due to the objections of the leadership of the Jesuit order. It proves that the Roman Curia's failure to solemnly confirm the founding of the Pázmány was not in fact due to the two-faculty nature of the institution, but rather to its Jesuit character. The reasons for this can be found in the more effective lobbying of the medieval universities and the mendicant orders, and the gradual decline of the Society of Jesus. Despite the subsequent confirmation by the Holy See, and the failure to grant university privileges in the form of a bull, the foundation of the university in 1635 may have been carried out with papal approval because Pázmány received a - preliminary - authorisation to found a university from Orban VIII in May 1632, during his imperial embassy to Rome.
A magyar történettudomány sarkalatos állítása, miszerint az 1635. évi nagyszombati egyetemalapítás csupán császári jóváhagyást nyert. VIII.

The pres... more THE HUNGARIAN HIERARCHY AND THE PAPACY IN THE 17th CENTURY (Problems and Turning Points)
The present study proposes to examine the complex relationship between the papacy and the bishops of the Hungarian Catholic renewal which began early in the 17th century. Its aim is to reveal the Roman connexions of Catholic modernisation in Hungary, and the main phases and characteristics of the process itself, that is, to establish its chronology. The first third of the century is characterised by cooperation. The more important milestones are the granting of the cardinal’s hat to the first great figures of the Counter-Reformation, archbishops Ferenc Forgach (1607-1615) and Peter Pazmany (1616-1637); the introduction of the Roman rite; and that upon the prelates’ petition the Roman inquisition censured the pro-Protestant Hungarian laws of 1608 and excommunicated Maximilian II (1608-1619) because he had signed them. Partly thanks to papal intervention the political positions of early medieval Catholicism became considerably more promising by the time of the diet of Pozsony held in the next year. The second phase, which lasted from 1632 to 1645, was one of intense conflicts of political and later of ecclesiastical nature. Peter Pazmany, who appeared in Rome as a Habsburg envoy in search of financial aid, became a persona non grata in the Curia until his death, and his return in the Eternal City was deliberately hindered by the papal diplomacy. The episcopal conference of the Hungarian prelates, held in 1639 at Nagyszombat, went as far as to assert almost overtly episcopalian views. The escalation of the crisis seems to find its cause in the nature of the Barberini pontificate and in the state-church system which was then being consolidated in Hungary. From the middle of the century the emphasis shifted to different political ambitions, old and new as well, such as the expulsion of the Ottomans or the adoption of the archbishops of Esztergom among the cardinals in order to improve their domestic positions. The ecclesiastical relations were characterised by a special modus vivendi. Yet when the Catholisation of Hungary reached its apogee in the 1670s, it was through the sometimes violent contribution of the Habsburg government and practically without Rome’s involvement. To sum up, then, the relationship between the Hungarian bishops and the papacy in the 17th century was shaped by the historical cycles of the papacy on the one hand, and by the Italian policy of the Habsburgs and the survival of medieval structures in Hungary on the other hand. Despite its own conceptions and aspirations, the elite of the Hungarian Catholic church was forced to adapt itself to these conditions.

A tanulmány Draskovich György győri püspöknek (1635–1650) az 1648. évi nemzeti zsinaton történt elítélését tárgyalja és helyezi kontextusba. A magyar egyháztörténetben páratlan zsinati büntetés kiszabása egyfelől az egyházi rend önkormányzatiságának elmélyítéseként, a kora újkori magyar katolicizmus tridentiánus szellemiségének megerősítéseként, illetve egyfajta morális megtisztulásként értelmezhető.

Fontosabb végkövetkeztetései a következők. Ezek ugyanis nemcsak a konfesszionalizáció eredményét, hanem folyamatát tekintve is megmutatkoztak.

(1663–1664) by Péter Tusor.
The aim of the study was to examine and analyse in detail, in the framework of a research
on the political role of the ecclesiastical estate (status ecclesiasticus), especially in the early
modern era, and on the basis of newly discovered sources, the measures taken by its leader,
György Lippay, primate of Hungary (1642–1666) in the interest of Miklós Zrínyi, ban
(banus) of Croatia (1647–1664) in the court of Vienna during 1663–1664. After 1608, the
Hungarian political establishment was characterised by the so-called „dualism of estates”.
In practice it meant that the ruler and the estates, or rather their leaders, the palatine and
the archbishop of Esztergom, primate of Hungary, exerted political power together. Until
the period examined here, primate Lippay was regarded as the main exponent of Habsburg
authority in Hungary.
From 1663 Lippay, who had previously treated Miklós Zrínyi with mistrust and even
as a political opponent, became his determined protector in the court. In the summer of
1663 he not only tried to get reinforcements for Zrínyi-Újvár, but also laboured for the dispatch of eight thousand German soldiers under the command of Zrínyi to make him
able, together with his own troops and the soldiers of the local Hungarian lords, to start
military operations against the Ottomans. While trying to convince in long letters duke
Johann Ferdinand Porzia, president of the Secret Council, he also sent to the imperial
court his Jesuit confessor, Zakariás Trinkell, provided with detailed instructions, and
giving him new information all the time. He also put to work his extensive network of
Jesuit connections. The mission of Trinkell was repeated in the middle of August 1664.
According to the new instructions of Lippay, which dwelt on the merits and grievances of
the ban, Trinkell was given the task of achieving that Zrínyi should be given a convenient
commanding post and an independent army in the war against the Ottomans.
Yet the imperial court concluded an armistice with the Ottomans already on 10
August 1664 at Vasvár, news of which only reached the Hungarian political leaders late
in September. Probably after informally consulting the main representatives of the estates,
among them Zrínyi himself, Lippay turned through Trinkell to bishop Christoph Bernard
von Galen of Münster, one of the leaders of the Rhenish Alliance, then staying in Vienna,
to protest against the peace, which had been made in complete secrecy, and was utterly
unfavourable to Hungary. He drew attention to the fact that the agreement was equally
injurious to the Empire, and proposed instead the immediate recuperation of Érsekújvár,
which had been lost in 1663. It was in the wake of the failure of this hitherto unknown
diplomatic mission that the idea of an anti-Habsburg conspiration (the so-called Wesselényi
conspiration) came to the fore.
1663, and especially 1664 are turning points in the history of the dualism of estates
which had been functioning since 1608. While also shedding light on the relationship
between Lippay and Zrínyi, the newly found sources analysed in this study mainly
enlighten this turn and, in connection with the approach of the imperial estates in October,
its special international aspects.

(THE HABSBURG COURT, THE HOLY SEE AND HUNGARY IN THE MID-1610S)
by Péter Tusor.
The present study aims to answer the question of why and how the 17th century, the „century
of Pázmány”, could have been so fully dominated in the course of Hungarian history by the
renowned archbishop. What were the political and personal conditions, underlying motivations and
circumstances of his appointment as archbishop? In the process of answering this question the
reader will have a taste of the Hungarian features of Catholic confessionalization in the early modern
period as well.
On the basis of archival research undertaken in Rome and Vienna, the solution of the
problem, applying the method of micropolitical analysis elaborated by Wolfgang Reinhard, can be
summarised as follows. Péter Pázmány was not only a decisive support of Habsburg consolidation in
Hungary that was to prevail for several centuries, as maintained by Gyula Szekfû, but also his
appointment was already directly connected to and influenced by this on the eve of the Thirty Years
War. More precisely, in relation to the settlement of Habsburg succession, which resulted in an
exceptional interdependence of imperial and papal policies, thus creating the harmony needed for
the bipolar appointment, and the shortcomings of which led directly to the eruption of the last great
European religious war.
It was as a client of Melchior Klesl, chief minister of Matthias II and head of the Secret
Council, that Pázmány entered the scene of high politics, and he managed to stay there even after
the fall of his patron in 1618. Thus Ferdinand II, who turned out to be the main beneficiary of
Pázmány’s archbishopric, could thank its conception to his greatest opponent, Melchior Klesl.
Practically all the turns of the eventful story which is aimed to be reconstructed in the present study
bear the unmistakeable signs of the peculiar political style of the Cardinal.
While Klesl endorsed the Hungarian friar for his own political interests, and generally
thought in all-European dimensions, possibly his most enduring achievement in the course of his
whole career was the pushing to the foreground of history, with the cooperation of Pope Paul V, of
one of the most outstanding figures of Hungarian cultural, political and church history.

Majd ennek alkalmazásával a felső-magyarországi felekezeti viszonyokat elemzi, Lippay György királyi kancellár, egri püspök 1640 körül keletkezett értékes ad limina jelentését alapul véve. Az elemzés tézise szerint a magyar katolikus egyházi elit ugyan megkísérelte kihasználni azokat az előnyöket, amiket a római centrum nyújthatott volna számára, ezek viszont részben a barokkizálódó pápaság elzárkózása miatt már nem voltak kamatoztathatók a felekezetszervezés terén, mint lettek volna mondjuk a 16. század második felében. A magyar episzkopátus számára mind világosabbá kellett válnia: arra, hogy a katolicizmus kisebbségiből többségi felekezetié válhasson, akkor van csak esély, ha mind kizárólagosabban államegyházi keretekben, erre alapozva pedig „versenyen kívüli” megoldásban, vagyis a Habsburg-abszolutizmussal alkotott szimbiózisban gondolkodik. Aminek azután a bel- és külpolitikai helyzet radikális megváltozása: a rendi dualizmus megszűnése, Erdély hanyatlása adott az 1670-ben évekre szomorú realitást.

H... more CARDINAL PÁZMÁNY’S ITALIAN CODEBOOK
C. H. Motmann ‘Residente d’Ungheria.’ On the Story of the
Hungarian Agenzia in Rome (by Péter Tusor).
The present publication provides aspects and data that have been practically unknown so far, on Péter Pázmány, Archbishop of Esztergom (1616-1637), the founder of early modern age Catholicism in Hungary, and his role at the scene of European, particularly Italian politics. Subsequent to his nomination as cardinal in 1629, during his imperial legateship in Rome in 1632, he came into conflict with Urban VIII, the French-oriented Barberini Pope. After he had returned home, he took the opposite standpoint to the papal Court on several occasions at Court in Vienna, and systemised the historical arguments for the cogency of sovereign control over Hungarian church benefices. His main help in discussing politics was C. H. Motmann, the judge of the Sacra Romana Rota and its procurator in Rome between 1633 and 1637. Motmann, who represented several German aristocrats and prelates and the emperor himself, informed the Archbishop of Esztergom presumably every week about the events in the Eternal City and Italy, and the results of his jobs in church and political matters. As for his role as an informant, three layers may be separated. 1. The regular consignment of manuscript newspapers (avvisi). 2. Hand-written letters. 3. Partly encrypted letters.
The extraordinary career of Motmann, who also considered himself as a royal Hungarian resident, is cleared up by carefully collected specialised literature and new sources, too. His reports sent to Hungary touch upon nearly all the issues of the contemporary relations of the Holy See and Hungary, among others the papal confirmation of the university of Nagyszombat, the reform of the Order of Saint Paul, the establishment of new dioceses, the papal confirmation of the bishops nominated by the sovereign, the taxes of the bulls, etc. One of the two surviving encrypted documents deals with the circumstances of the genesis of the papal bull ‘Sancta Synodus Tridentina’ that can be connected to Pázmány’s person. Its transliteration is published, together with the decoding of the lost codebook and the method of decoding. As a consequence of the strict provisions of the so-called ‘residence bull’, the proportion of non-Italian cardinals attending at conclaves touched bottom in the 17th century. The medieval data of the other encrypted report produce evidence that Transylvania had always belonged to the Hungarian Crown and as a result the Habsburgs, who also held the royal Hungarian title, were authorised to nominate its bishop. Pázmány’s communication with Motmann is not only an important and interesting chapter in the history of early modem age Hungarian ecclesiastic representation in Rome. The secret correspondence is primarily a crucial proof that the Archbishop of Esztergom discussed politics independently in Italy. Certainly, independence does not mean ‘sovereignty’ here. It means that the head of the Hungarian church could join the Habsburgs’ western European diplomacy as a free and acting member. Regarding the reduced possibilities of the Hungarian nobility in foreign affairs at the time, this can be considered as a remarkable point of interest. –
DECHIFFREMENT DU CODE ITALIEN DU CARDINAL PAZMANY
C. H. Motmann ”residente d ’Ungheria”.

The entire volume Collectanea Vaticana Hungariae I/19, entitled "Lósy, Lippay, Szelepchény. Micr... more The entire volume Collectanea Vaticana Hungariae I/19, entitled "Lósy, Lippay, Szelepchény. Microbiographical Studies from the Early Modern Age (With the Verbals of Enquiry Processes, 1625–1666)" continues the full-text publication of the canonical enquiry (processus informativus) records begun with Péter Pázmány (1616–1637) (CVH II/6), but now only includes the personnel material. This time, it contains personal material from the Vatican of three of Pázmány's successors: Imre Lósy (1637–1642), György Lippay (1642–1666) and György Szelepchény (1666–1685). The choice is justified by the decisive role played by the archbishops of Esztergom in the history of Hungarian church, society, society and culture during the early modern period. Starting from the paradigm of the publication of the Pázmány process, the study shows how make it possible to learn about the life of the high priest from early modern Hungary, based on the widest possible source material, historical documents from Hungary (Carpathian Basin), Vienna, and Italy (Vatican). In other words, the Vatican sources, the canonical investigation reports, provide special information for this purpose that cannot be found elsewhere. The present work does not illustrate all of this by way of comparative analyzes and examples, but rather by reviewing the entire life path biographically, or more precisely microbiographically, with a critical, especially source-critical demand.
According to the definition in the volume, a "microbiography" is a biography written in the form of a study, which deals with a historical figure whose life path - due to its historical role, significance and extant documentary material - can and should be worked on in a (large) monographic form in the future. At the same time, by counting and reviewing the already complete source material (in this case a total of 34 Hungarian, Austrian, Croatian, Bohemian and Italian archives), as well as scientific literature (about 420 items), only the curriculum, and more important/interesting ecclesiastical, cultural, political data, aspects and problems will be clarified and the essential questions will be answered summarizing and in some places.
The important thesis of the research is that although the coat of arms of Lósy, György Lippay, and Szelepchény does not yet have the ducal crown symbolizing their secular primacy and feudal autonomy, it is present in their aspirations, demands, and actual ecclesiastical and political practice. Moreover, their real power and actual influence on national politics, based on the aspirations of Pázmány, was much greater than that of their successors for the next three centuries.

To the general consternation of the Hungarian catholic public opinion, in the summer of 1911 three writings of the symbolic figure of the modern Hungarian Catholicism were put on the list of forbidden books in the Roman Curia. The most important result of our writing is, that we could prove: it was not simply an “Index-case” as it had been stated by Gábor Adriányi, Ferenc Szabó, Jenő Gergely and others, leastwise in the Roman section of the investigation by no means. The real motivation of the curial process of 1911 was to make an example of him, namely, the intention to make him deprived from his office as a bishop. The putting of his works on the list of forbidden books was only a kind of device for it. In the Roman Curia he was not only desired to be silenced or removed from Catholic public life (it could be rather the plan of the Vigilantia Commission of Esztergom), but intended to be removed from the church governance. This explains why he had not been asked to give an explanation about the meaning of his criticized writings before they would have been put on the list of the forbidden books, despite the fact that according to the order of Pope Benedict XIV he expressly should have been asked as a bishop. Instead, in the well-known decree of the Index Congregation of 5 June 1911, it was forbidden their reading and there was the deliberation that about this the Secretariat of State or the Consistorial Congregation had to be informed. The importance and real intention of the latter condition we can see only now. In 1913 the Index Congregation did not discussed the case of his subsequently criticized works; regarded as a recidivist, immediately the Consistorial Congregation took action against him. Hence, it would be more correct in the future talking about putting the works of Prohászka on the list of forbidden books and the failed attempt to deprive him from his office as a bishop, namely about his “Index and Consistorial-case”. While in Hungary the social views of Prohászka were caused resentment among the clergy, in Rome his accusation of modernism was in the focus and arouse the opposition of Cardinal Gaetano de Lai, the prefect of the Consistorial Congregation and the vanguard of fight against modernism. Cardinal De Lai informed also Pope Pius X about the measures against Bishop Prohászka, who approved them. Though, Ottokár Prohászka was not deprived from his office as a bishop in the end, as the head of the Hungarian Episcopate, János Csernoch, the primate of Hungary expressly opposed this and stood up for his bishop-mate against Cardinal De Lai. In the autumn of 1913 Prohászka had a private audience with Pope Pius X, who privately rehabilitated the Hungarian bishop, but his works remained on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. The reports about the Hungarian prelates’ antimodernist measures in their dioceses – obligatory on the basis of the Motu proprio Sacrorum Antistitum issued on the 1st September 1910 –, among them Prohászka’s account, are published in the appendix of the study.

VIII.

VIII.

Only two cases of Hungarian canonisation were reviewed in Rome during this period, and these were only carried out in the 20li; century. In 1628-1629, the beatification of the canons of Esztergom, who suffered a martyr’s death by the hands of Transylvanian Protestant soldiers in 1619, and the two Jesuit friars, came to a sudden stop, since there was insufficient evidence presented to the congregation. The canonisation process of the Dominican nun, Margaret of the Arpad House, a Hungarian princess who died in 1270, had a more promising start. The main sponsor of the matter was Ferdinand HI (1637-1657). It was partially financed by the national treasury. With the active co-operation of the Roman Imperial diplomatic representative between 1639-1643, a member of the Dominican order who was put in charge, was sent to the Eternal City to manage the case. Statements of evidence from the medieval papal witnesses from 1276 were presented for the matter, and new witness statements were brought forth for the proof of the continuous saint cult. Though after several sessions of discussions, the congregation authorised the commencement of the canonisation procedure, the Hungarian ambassadorial group to Rome, which was continuously struggling with organisational and financial problems, thus came to face an impossible task. The failure of the canonisation was primarily due to the absence of the proper and persistent representation of Hungarian interests from the royal court and the absence of the assertion of these interests, which, therefore, created a problem in numerous other areas regarding the Papal and Hungarian relations during the period. Signs of some occasional cases involved with the ritus congrations can be found among the files that were systematically searched through by the present author. The decree of the congregation for the year 1626, served as the direction of use for the pallium of the archbishop of Kalocsa, who resided in the diocese of Esztergom due to the Turkish occupation. Not only did the higher priesthood, but also the middle church stratum request the opinion of the office occasionally. The monastic orders asked for these views for instance, in relation to problems involving liturgical clothing, emblems, the use of the Gregorian calendar, and the celebration of holidays. On the whole, it possible to say that the activities of the rite congregation in Hungary were more modest during this period than in the case of other national churches. At the same time, its role in the Catholic renewal in Hungary can be shown to have had effect on a wide scale. This is almost exclusive for this particular time when it comes to the fulfilment of the reforms, for the years of 1620-1640. It had somewhat variable results, due to the often over bureaucratic processes of the procedures, as well as the existing and continuous shortcomings of the Hungarian assertion of interests, which remained for the most time an unresolved problem.
The volume contains Italian and English introduction and 18 studies in Italian or in English on nearly 500 pages. Its genesis was given by the international workshop organised May 2013 in Budapest with the same title for the 500th anniversary of the participation of Cardinal Tamás Bakócz the archbishop of Esztergom in the conclave. The Italian, Spanish, French, German, Austrian, Slovenian and Hungarian lecturers without exception detailed their thoughts and utilized the experiences of the scholarly conference lasting several days in monumental studies written in Italian or in English.
The volume divides into six chapters; each is introduced by a study that synthesizes the given period and themes, followed by two or three analytic papers.
There are separate chapters about the 16th century and the age of the “reform nunciatures” (I.); the 17th century political, church jurisdictional and doctrinal questions (II.); the problems of the Holy See and the local churches in the 18th century (III.); and the overseas missions in the early modern age (IV.). In the Vth (1–2) chapter the relations to some particular churches (Poland, German bishops) and the role of the nunciatures of Paris and Munich is presented up to the 19th and partially to the 20th century. The VIth chapter has again chronological character and deals with the long 19th century with outlook to the modern age.
The collection of studies utilizes and contains the latest results of the relating international researches. Its declared aim is to be an essential aid and inspirer of further examinations in these subjects of world history nature (Reformation, Gallicanism, the Roman Question....).
The book is closed by an account about the conference and an index of names. The results of the Italian studies are delineated in English summaries.
As in its predecessors (CVH I/8 and CVH I/15), this volume of studies presents the current trends in Vatican Hungarian historical research in the form of sample publications and preliminary studies. All this done, as before, not only by members of the Vilmos Fraknói Vatican Historical Research Group, but also with the involvement of wider professional circle, mainly with the participation of other members of the Hungarian research community and partly of research institutes. The conference will be preceded by the VIII Fraknói Summer Academy.
The opening essay, written by Dániel Bácsatyai on the 800th anniversary of the publication of the Golden Bull (Aranybulla), finally outlines the real historical context of the document’s creation in the force field of the Vatican research. The original of the bull of Pope Honorius III, dated 9 December 1222, preserved in Barcelona, has so far completely escaped the attention of the relevant research, and its careful analysis reveals completely new data, aspects and contexts. Tamás Fedeles publishes and processes the Hungarian entries of hitherto neglected Camera Apostolica volume from the late 14th century. Gábor Nemes publishes and places in historical context newly discovered papal breves from 1476 from Sixtus IV. The Vestigia Research Group, personally Hajnalka Kuffart, has the merit of unearthing the earliest Hungarian canonical investigation record to date, dating from 1503. This is followed by two impressive contributions by the Hungarian Mediavistical Research Group. Norbert C. Tóth presents and publishes his rotula of the litigation on the Sacra Romana Rota in 1514–1515 concerning the canonry of the St. Peter’s altar in Esztergom. Bálint Lakatos has compiled the documents of the appointment of the renowned humanist Girolamo Balbi, provost of Pozsony (Bratislava), as bishop of Gurk (1522–1523), thanks to his collection of sources from the Vatican and Austria. Lakatos’ study clarifies and supplements Balbi’s biography in several aspects.
In the study introducing the early modern period, Viktor Kanász examines the Hungarian aspects of the reports sent to Rome by Girolamo Martinengo of Vienna and Ludovico Beccadelli, the Venetian Apostolic Nuncio, between 1550 and 1554. It demonstrates that the papacy had complex and reliable information on the Kingdom of Hungary in the mid-16th century. Tamás Kruppa traces the diplomatic efforts of Filippo Spinelli, the new papal nuncio to the imperial court in Prague in 1598, in relation to the Principality of Transylvania until 1600. He reveals that the idea of a possible principality of the ruling papal dynasty, the House of Aldobrandini, was also raised in the Roman planning. Péter Tusor examines the denunciation of Péter Pázmány, Archbishop of Esztergom, against Gáspár Verbanovich, canon of Zagreb, sent to Rome in the autumn of 1625, and places it in the coordinates of the Catholic confessionalization in Hungary, the history of the diocese of Eger and Croatian-Hungarian relations in the 17th century. Béla Mihalik takes a closer look at the appointment of Mihály Telekessy, canon of Győr, bishop of Csanád, famous for his archpastorship of Eger, using the letters of Abbot Fabrizio Agostini, cardinal protectorate agent, active in the Roman proceedings, preserved in Florence. Also an illustrative example of the special value of the Roman agent reports is the article by Róbert Oláh P., who describes the papal conclave of 1769 on the basis of Bartolomeo Pinto Poloni’s reports preserved in Győr, using sources of control from Vienna. The statement of Mons. Tamás Tóth describes the first canonical investigation protocol of the diocese of Székesfehérvár in 1777, due to the location of the conference history in Piliscsaba. Katalin Nagy, a colleague of the Moravcsik Institute, and a research resident of the same institute and of the Vilmos Fraknói Research Group in the Vatican archives, publishes the first research request of Vilmos Fraknói from the prefectural archives of the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano in 1881. Their particular informative value is that they irrefutably prove that the aim of Fraknói and his associates was from the very beginning to explore and publish Vatican sources of Hungarian relevance, and not a (even) larger-scale project.
The 20th century is represented by three papers. Tamás Véghseő from Nyíregyháza, with the help of some documents from the Historical Archives of the Papal State Secretariat, shows the early memories of the foundation of the diocese of Hajdúdorog in 1912 in Romanian aspect, and the fears of the restoration of the original borders of the Hungarian Greek Catholic diocese in the context of the Second Vienna decision of 1940. From the same repository come two reports by Alvary Gascoigne, the British Ambassador Extraordinary in Budapest, on his negotiations with Archbishop József Grősz of Kalocsa in 1945. The documents, processed by György Sági, reached the Papal Secretariat of the State through the British Ambassador Extraordinary to the Vatican. Finally, Balázs Rétfalvi analyses the interesting and instructive account of the visit of Piarist General Vince Tomek to Hungary after the nationalisation of church schools in June 1948. The document is housed in the central archives of the Piarist Order in Rome (Archivio Generale delle Scuole Pie).
The monograph diagnoses the Roman Hungarian scientific presence' significant problems compared with other Western Europeans' projects and institutes. With this the volume presents the continuous Hungarian research projects' restart.
Perhaps this work can bridge from the beginnings until now the discontinuity of Roman Hungarian projects' histories.
Appendix contains Roman and Vatican documents' lists and selected unpublished sources which are the base of the narrative.
Apart from the Appendix a Bibliography (193-208) an Index (211-218) and an English study (219-244) are related to the volume.

A histioriográfia a 2004-ben megjelent CVH I/1 kutatástörténeti bevezetésének bővített és frissített, önálló monografikus kiadása. Az Apostoli Szentszék levéltáraiban végzett magyar kutatásokat tekinti át a pozitivizmus korától kezdődően napjainkig 1881 és 2021 között; előzetes kitekintéssel a 16. század végéig. Ismerteti a különféle kutatástörténeti periódusokat, kiadványokat, a fontosabb és rendre ismétlődő determinációkat. A monográfia egy rangos és nemzetközi vonatkozásaiban is jelentős „részdiszciplina” elemzésével szemléletesen diagnosztizálja a magyar történettudomány alapvető hiányosságát: a nyugat-európai példákkal ellentétben a századokon átívelő intézményi, még inkább projekt- kontinuitás fogyatékosságát. Bemutatja az ebből fakadó folytonos újrakezdések parabolikáját. A Függelék tartalmazza a római, vatikáni anyagról készült magyarországi másolatok, mikrofilmek jegyzékét. E kutatástörténeti adatgyűjtés nagyban hozzájárulhat ahhoz, hogy a diszkontinuitás végre kiküszöbölődjön a vatikáni magyar kutatások történetéből. A szintén a Függelékhez tartozó dokumentumválogatás a monografikus narratíva állításait szemléltetik. Jelen kiadásban megtalálható a Római Magyar Intézet „Fraknói Vilmos” Történeti Osztályának új szervezeti szabályzata is. Az MTA 1940-ben kiadott rendelkezése az intézmény vatikáni kutatásokban játszott szerepének, a II. osztály alá rendelt akadémikusi szakbizottság működésének utolsó érdemi dokumentuma. A kötethez külön Bibliográfia (pp. 193–208), Index (pp. 211–218); angol nyelvű annotált kísérőtanulmány (pp. 219–244), a magyar mellett angol Tartalomjegyzék (pp. 245–248) tartozik.
----------------
THE MAIN RESULTS IN POINTS:
I. Based on the correspondence of the papal Secretariat of State and the nunciature of Vienna.
1) Not only did Urban VIII and his surroundings find the Roman embassage of the archbishop of Esztergom “undesirable”, but explicitly as a threat. They regarded it as part of the Spanish conduct led by Cardinal Gaspare Borgia, Spanish envoy, against the seemingly neutral but Francophile papal policy. 2) As the Roman relations to the Habsburg courts had to remain correct, they did not pay much attention to the fact that there was a royal order behind Borgia and Pázmány’s conduct; they regarded them as personal enemies. 3) The Hungarian cardinal was secretly watched, his commission was made impossible by the Curia right from the beginning. They did not focus on the imperial requests and their dismissal, but on ceremonial problems, especially on the acknowledgement of the Hungarian cardinal’s title as an imperial legate. 4) The cornered Pázmány was accused of practicing pretence in the papal court and they created such negative atmosphere concerning Pázmány’s defensive letter, Intermittere non possum – whose contemporary copies can be found in every significant European manuscript collection – that he was compared to the hated Borgia and the Curia was considered the attacked party. 5) The conflict of the cardinalate and the legatine commission was mainly stressed in relation to Borgia, the Spanish envoy. Although the cardinals could continue doing the duty of an envoy in the papal court, the number of the appointment of the non-Italian cardinals (cardinali nazionali) significantly reduced after the “riot” of Borgia and Pázmány. 6) Based on the reports of the nuncios about the scandalous Pázmány-affair one can state that there the already weak confidence in the pope’s kindness and the Curia’s explanations has further fallen. As a consequence, the authority and influence of the nuncios of Vienna was also violated in the court of Vienna. 7) Vienna could not be convinced even by the zeal of the Curia; namely, it tried to spread the Roman version of the events by giving particular orders to the nunciature, according to which Pázmány’s improper behaviour was to be blamed for the Curia’s rightful accusations. It is contradicted not only by the cardinal’s reports but also by others’ accounts. 8) The archbishop of Esztergom could not be discredited and destabilised in the imperial court; moreover, it was being seriously considered to send him back to the Eternal City; though, the ardent opposition of the papal diplomacy hindered it in the end. 9) The diplomatic conflict between the Hungarian head of church and the pope created tension also in the relations of the Hungarian church and the Holy See of Rome for decades.
II. Based on the verbals of the Secretariat of State that are being published and on the analyses
While reading the sources published in this volume, the historical atmosphere comes to life. The papal audiences given during the Hungarian cardinal’s embassage and the negotiations with Azzolini could be experienced in real time even at the distance of 400 years. Thanks to the sources of the Vatican, special prospects of the historical recognition have opened up to the readers.
1) Pázmány’s “change of loyalty” can be detected. In his summarising report of late May, Péter Pázmány finally shared the details of the papal audience of 6 April, 1632 with the imperial Secret Council, despite Urban VIII’s canonical ban and his former vow. The primate of Hungary had to choose between his loyalty as a cardinal and as a member of the Secret Council. The choice was made after a long inner and external struggle only at the very end of his embassage in Rome, in the second half of May 1632. From this time on the archbishop of Esztergom became the rigorous enemy of the Barberini-House, one of the “buzzards” of the court of Vienna in the Italian and papal policy. Not only did the Barberinis regard him as an enemy, but the feeling was mutual. 2) From the verbals of the negotiations with Secretary of State Azzolini it is clear that Pázmány himself suggested and requested many times that they should grant financial aid sooner, in one lamp sum, from the instalments of the Italian tithes. The finally granted 130,000 imperial talers was the biggest lamp sum ever that an imperial envoy could obtain from Urban VIII – despite Roman political interests – during the Thirty Years’ War for the purposes of the Catholic League. 3) An important result of our verbal-analysis is that we could learn that, although being in a more disadvantageous tactical situation, the Hungarian prelate – who was actually choleric – also masterly employed the tools of diplomatic pretence like that of the curial prelates. However, it should be noted that the tone and content of his reports written to Vienna and of his negotiations only differed a couple of weeks later, while it can be detected in the correspondence of the Secretariat of State right from the beginning. 4) For the Hungarian as well as international historiography, the purpura is a crucial element of Pázmány’s historical identity. He himself did not attribute much significance to his title of cardinal (in his opinion “his red hat served nothing else but to hang it above his grave”), which offers an insight into his personality and his monastic soul. 5) It is important for the result of the research that the Congregazione dello Stato occurs in the files; moreover, one can study the daily routine of the papal decision making and the preparatory work of the Secretariat of State. Lorenzo Azzolini was the actual head of the papal foreign policy; he was still an official, though, his activity and influence was an important step towards the establishment of the cardinal secretary of state’s position. 6) The Hungarian primate’s conduct in Rome exceeded the relations of the emperor and the pope by far and functioned on the highest level of European diplomacy. Not only did he secretly negotiate with Borgia, but the Spanish and the Austrian-Habsburg envoy mutually acted in front of the Roman diplomacy. Instead of the “Borgia-crisis”, one can and should speak about the “Borgia-Pázmány-crisis” in relation to the most dramatic events of the Roman diplomacy during the Thirty Years’ War. 7)
Pázmány’s hint given to Azzolini on 12 April, namely that he would move to Rome for several years to serve the Church, shows that the plan of his permanent Roman imperial embassage and his cardinal protectorate did not occur during his mission in 1632, as it has been believed, but on the contrary: his commission was the first (and last) episode of a long-established plan of a Roman diplomatic role. 8) During the embassage, the Hungarian primate’s attempt to involve the pope in an anti-Swedish league was a complete and clear failure. However, Urban VIII’s Francophile policy should not solely be blamed for this fiasco and should not only be analysed in the context of Rome and Vienna’s relations. The text that Pázmány brought to Rome was unacceptable not only for the papal court but also for the court of Madrid due to its phrases on the Low Countries. Therefore, the archbishop of Esztergom had to represent such a program that hadn’t been supported by the Spanish monarchy in its written form. The league between the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs was finally realized in 1634. 9) The last and most sensational result of our research: Pázmány intended to publish the most important documents of his embassage in Rome. Pázmány crossed out the addresses and cadences and added titles, sometimes even comments. A fair copy was also made of the labelled text-versions. Pázmány edited the most important documents of his embassage; he compiled the documents that depicted the empire’s situation the best, and then he contrasted them with the documents of the abortive and diversionary debate over his title as a legate. Finally, the manuscript was not edited and was placed in the primatial archives. Such an antipapal publication would not have achieved its goal that the archbishop of Esztergom understood after all.
The “Pázmány-Borgia-affair” is a turning point in the history of the papacy. The termination of the papacy’s role among the great powers sealed in the Peace of Westphalia can be dated back to this time.
The volume is decisively of biographical, prosopographical and genealogical nature. The source that serves as its basis combines traditional historical genres, occasionally with microphilological thoroughness. By being connected with the illustrious historical discourse of the Pázmány-research it presents how and in what measure the processus informativus, this unique and important sequential type of source of the Vatican, can be exploited and give an excess to the existing researches and Hungarian sources. Nonetheless, the perspectives that the Italian private archives can offer in order to make Hungarian history better known (and understood) are presented.
The possibility of the further scientific exploitation is primarily connected to the Pázmány-research, as well. The specified and modified data of certain careers and the family circumstances can be reflected in his literary work. It remains the task of the history of literature to re-read the works of Pázmány – following the method of Miklós Őry – and to find bases along newer biographical results, or even to raise objections. The same is held to our observations concerning his literary work.
The analysis of the archive of the Pázmány–Tholdy family, revealed through research, their documents’ richness in data and the nature of the historian’s narrative, which relies upon those data and radically diverges from the text of the verbal-analysis proves that the process and the family archive practically “talk at cross purposes”. The one does not cover the lack of the other. Moreover, they complement each other. The famous phrase of László Fejérpataky: “The history of Hungary cannot be written without the knowledge of the archives of Italy and mainly the Vatican”, is current, however, not primarily due to the loss of data in Hungary, since that is irrecoverable. The phrase is relevant, because the archives of Italy (could) preserve such data for us that can be unreachable in Hungary even under ideal source conditions.
The volume is of interest of both the professional and wider circle of readers due to the revealment of primary sources and the conducted basic research. The testimony of the witnesses (for example of such well-known persons that Bálint Lépes and Lőrinc Ferenczffy) of September 1616 about Pázmány and his career to the archbishopric chair can be read in the volume also in Hungarian translation. Their words reveal the family of Pázmány, his catholicisation, his studies in Kolozsvár and his missionary and polemical activity. In the presentation of Pázmány’s role appears the world of transition from Reformation to Counter Reformation from a so far unknown aspect. The documents of the newly revealed Pázmány-Tholdy family archives lead us to the ambiance of Várad of the 1570s and 1580s. The everyday life of the nobles of this country of Calvinist majority, that had been since some decades already Protestant, comes alive due to the documents of the Protestant Pázmánys and the Catholic Tholdys. That milieu, in which Pázmány lived as a child and returned occasionally as a student of Kolozsvár before at the age of 18 he left forever his fatherland. The ancestors of the Pázmánys, the lawsuits between members of the family, the masterfulness and gaining of estates of the ambitious father, Miklós, and the financial conditions of the family are also outlined. In connection with the investigation of a murder case the decaying estate and the inhabitants of Panasz, who were mostly the serfs of the Pázmánys, evoke the world of the village. The most interesting Hungarian language sources can be found in the Appendix in their full length. In addition to the genealogical, biographical and family history data they prove us also that the religious movements of the mid-16th century left the late-medieval, humanist-legal culture of Várad fundamentally untouched and they did not bring any basic change in the family strategies motivated by the possibilities of social rise.

Kánoni kivizsgálás Pázmány Péterről. Családja, katolizálása, misszionálása. (A Pázmány–Tholdy archívum irataival) (CVH II/6), feltárta, fordította, kísérő tanulmánnyal és dokumentumokkal közreadja Tusor Péter, Budapest–Róma 2017. 462 p. + 3 melléklet (2 kép, 1 térkép).
A további hasznosítás lehetősége is elsődlegesen a Pázmány-kutatáshoz kapcsolódik. A pontosított, módosított életpályaadatok, családi körülmények visszatükröződhetnek irodalmi alkotásaiban.
A kötet, eredeti forrásfeltárása, alapkutatás jellege mellett nemcsak a szakmai, hanem a szélesebb olvasói kör érdeklődésére is számot tarthat. A Pázmányról, az érseki székig megtett életútról szóló 1616. szeptember végi tanúvallomások (például olyan ismert személyeké, mint Lépes Bálint, Ferenczffy Lőrinc) magyar fordításban is olvashatóak. A kortársak szavaiban megidéződik Pázmány családja, katolizálása, a kolozsvári tanulmányai, térítői, hitvitázó tevékenysége. Feltárulnak előttünk a Pázmányok ősei, a családon belüli perek, a feltörekvő apa, Miklós birtokszerzései, hatalmaskodásai, a család anyagi viszonyai. Egy gyilkossági eset nyomozása kapcsán a hamarosan elpusztuló birtok, Panasz lakói, többségükben a Pázmányok jobbágyai idézik meg a falu világát. Az érdekesebb, magyar nyelvű források a függelékben teljes szövegükben is megtalálhatóak. A genealógiai, életrajzi és családtörténeti adatokon túlmenően azt is bizonyítják számunkra, hogy a 16. század derekának vallási mozgalmai alapjaiban érintetlenül hagyták Várad késő-középkori humanista-jogi jellegű kultúráját, és a felemelkedésre törekvő családi stratégiákban nem hoztak alapvető változást.
The volume gives a scientific plan to the forthcoming five years of the HAS-PPCU Vilmos Fraknói Vatican Historical Research Group that focuses on the Hungarian historical research in the Vatican and was established in 2017 as an organic continuation of the Impetus research group. It contains the lectures-turned-studies of the “Hungarian Historical Researches of the 21th Century in the Vatican” symposium of the VIIIth International Hungarology Congress organised by the Impetus research group on the 23rd August 2016.
The chronological and thematic order of the volume’s writings clearly outlines the planned focus and directions of the research group’s researches. The first five studies examine late medieval subject. Ágnes Maléth analyses the diplomatic relations between Charles I and the papal court in the light of sources from the Vatican Archives. Tamás Fedeles provides input to the work of the papal tax collectors by the presentation of the operation of one of them: Péter, son of István, whose person is well-known both for the Hungarian and the Polish research. Kornél Szovák examines how the Turkish question appeared in the supplications handed in the Roman Curia in the fifteenth century. Gábor Nemes processed the late medieval presence of laics and priests from the diocese of Győr in Rome leaning on various curial types of sources. Finally, the study of Bálint Lakatos provides insight into the ceremonial hierarchy of the papal court, in which he examines the place of Hungary.
The focus of the next six studies is the Early Modern Age. Viktor Kanász outlines his plan to reveal the Vatican sources concerning the curial process of György Fráter’s murder, with which he desires to settle the long-standing debt of the Hungarian historiography. Similarly, Péter Tusor drafts the details of his project about the methodical exploitation of the verbals of the seventeenth century canonical examinations. Tamás Tóth deals with this subject for the eighteenth century. Tamás Kruppa analyses the relations of politics and religion in the early seventeenth century on the basis of the works and correspondence of the Jesuit Giovanni Argenti. Béla Vilmos Mihalik also presents a diplomatic subject: the connections of the Holy See and the Court of Vienna at the end of the 17th century, at the time of the Roman legation of Count Georg Adam von Martinitz. Gábor Kisvarga outlines the plan to publish the monograph of Ferenc Galla, which survived in a manuscript, on the missions in the territory under Turkish rule.
The last four studies delineate the third main direction of the investigations of the research group; the Hungarian historical researches in the Vatican about the twentieth century. Krisztina Tóth presents the point of view of the Holy See about the Hungarian royal right of patronage at the turn of the 1920s through the protocols of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. Máté Gárdonyi reveals the documentary value of the renewed ad limina reports submitted already not to the Congregation of Council, but to the Consistorial Congregation. Tamás Véghseő provides interesting additions to the problems of the consolidation of the Hungarian Greek Catholics after the Treaty of Trianon in his source publication. Ultimately, Lilla Fehér unfolds a chapter of the history of the emigration in Rome after 1945: the attempt to establish the Saint Stephen Academy.
The volume is supplemented by rich source material, charts and maps published at the singular studies, pictures, summaries in English and an index.

Magyarország és a római Szentszék II. Vatikáni magyar kutatások a 21. században (CVH I/15), szerk. Tusor Péter–Szovák Kornél–Fedeles Tamás, Budapest–Róma 2017. 436 p. + (11 melléklet (7 p. műnyomó képmell., 4 térkép)
A kötet a Lendület-kutatócsoport szerves folytatásaként 2017-ben megalakult, a vatikáni magyar történeti kutatásokat működése középpontjába állító MTA-PPKE Fraknói Vilmos Római Történeti Kutatócsoport számára ad szakmai prognózist az elkövetkezendő öt évre. Alapjául a 2016. augusztus 23-án a pécsi VIII. Nemzetközi Hungarológiai Kongresszus Lendület-kutatócsoport által szervezett Vatikáni magyar történeti kutatások a 21. században szimpóziumán elhangzott előadások szolgálnak.
A tanulmányok kronológiai, tematikai rendje körvonalazza a kutatócsoport tervezett kutatásainak súlypontját, irányait. Az első öt tanulmány késő középkori témát vizsgál. Maléth Ágnes I. Károly és a pápai udvar közötti diplomáciai kapcsolatokat elemezi vatikáni levéltári források fényében. Fedeles Tamás a pápai tizedszedők munkájához szolgál adalékkal, a magyar és a lengyel kutatás számára egyaránt ismert pápai adószedő, István fia Péter kollektori működésének bemutatásával. Végül Lakatos Bálint tanulmánya a pápai udvar ceremoniális rangsorába enged betekintést, melyben Magyarország helyét vizsgálja.
A következő hat tanulmány súlypontját a kora újkor adja. Kanász Viktor Fráter György kuriális perére vonatkozó szentszéki források feltárásának tervét vázolja, mellyel a historiográfia régi adósságát igyekszik törleszteni. Hasonlóképpen Tusor Péter, aki a 17. századi kánoni kivizsgálási jegyzőkönyvek módszeres kiaknázásának tervét vázolja fel. Ehhez kapcsolódik Tóth Tamás írása, aki ugyanezt a témát a 18. század vonatkozásában körvonalazza. Kruppa Tamás Giovanni Argenti jezsuita művei és levelezése alapján vizsgálja politika és vallás kapcsolatát a 17. század elején Erdélyben. Szintén diplomáciai témát mutat be Mihalik Béla Vilmos: a Szentszék és a bécsi udvar kapcsolatát a 17. század végén, Georg Adam von Martinitz gróf római követsége idején. Kisvarga Gábor Galla Ferencnek a hódoltsági missziókról írt kéziratban maradt munkája kiadásának tervét vázolja.
Az utolsó négy tanulmány a kutatócsoport harmadik fő kutatási irányát a 20. századra vonatkozó szentszéki magyar kutatásokat körvonalazza. Tóth Krisztina a Szentszéknek az 1920-as évek fordulóján magyar királyi főkegyúri joggal kapcsolatban elfoglalt álláspontját ismerteti a Rendkívüli Egyházi Ügyek Kongregációja jegyzőkönyvein keresztül.
The volume that is a unique undertaking even on international level processes the material of the Apostolic Nunciature of Budapest from the diplomatic fonds of the Vatican between the two world wars in the form of a synoptic inventory. Its preparation connected to the strategically important Hungarian historical research in the Vatican, which has a long tradition and is characterized by the name of Vilmos Fraknói, replaces the work of the Hungarian Historical Institute in Rome that currently functionally does not exist.
The book gives a picture about the structure and content of an extremely diverse and rich, expressly Hungarian related material outlining the most important topics of the relations of the Holy See and Hungary in the examined period of time; between 1920 and 1939. It contains such subjects that were determinative both from the point of view foreign and domestic policy. To mention only some examples: the effect of the Treaty of Trianon on the Church organisation, the role and importance of Catholicism in preserving Hungarian culture on the taken away territories, the royal right of patronage, the Catholic renaissance, monumental Catholic celebrations, etc. Besides, the volume provides valuable additions to the history of the single dioceses, religious orders and institutes and thecurriculum of certain Ecclesiastical and laypersons.
On the one hand, the importance of the inventory is given by the fact, that it facilitates the work of the researchers arriving at the Vatican Secret Archives, as this way they can obtain information about the content of the bustae in advance, and thus they can carry out targeted research. On the other hand, it contributes to the understanding and processing of the relations of the Holy See and Hungary and the contemporary role of the papal Central-European diplomacy with due subtlety both on national and international level. Its continuation, the Inventarium Vaticanum II, which is in preparation, will contain the abundant Hungarian related material of the nunciatures of Prague, Bucharest and Beograd and the Congregazione per gli Affari Ecclesiastici Straordinari.
The volume is completed by a detailed introduction, which discusses the history of the nunciature, the so far processing of the Hungarian related fonds opened in 2006 and also the methodology of the preparation of the inventory, contemporary photos, a map, a thorough register of places and names compiled by György Sági and a summarizing study in English.

Tóth Krisztina–Tusor Péter: Inventarium Vaticanum I. A Budapesti Apostoli Nunciatúra levéltára (1920–1939) (CVH I/14), Budapest–Róma 2016. lxii + 360 p. és 4 melléklet (képek, térkép)
The subject of the monograph is the appointment of Péter Pázmány as the primate of Hungary. It analyzes the causes, aims and interrelations of one of the most influential macro-political facts of the early modern Hungarian history with micro-political approach – a technique that was elaborated for the age by Wolfgang Reinhard – and reconstructs its twisting events with critical sense. The question has attracted increasing attraction of the Hungarian historiography for three centuries starting out from György Pray. Yet only partial or false answers were found. The volume encompasses political, diplomatic and church-historical dimensions; what is more, it enriches also the art history by a new result. The author confidently uses the results of the Latin and Italian philology and – as auxiliary sciences – secular and canon law history.
Separate chapters deal with the protracted negotiations of the Habsburg and the papal diplomacy, the way of Pázmány leading temporarily out of the Jesuit order, the surrounding tensions inside the order, the accuses, the Somascan novice-candidacy, etc. Both his supporters and a fair number of his enemies are unfolded in the volume. Furthermore, we get an answer to the question whether his appointment was really problematic from the point of view of canon law or not, whether he fathered a child or not, whether he was heated by ambition and so wanted to be the primate of Hungary at all; who interested mostly in filling this position with him, and finally who became the main beneficiary of his appointment. The causes and driving force of the unique career turnaround are revealed analyzing the inner relations of the Court of Rome and Prague and the European high politics on the eve of the break out of the Thirty Years’ War.
The reader can dive into the special depths of historical cognition from the perspective of four centuries due to the fortunate source facilities and the wide exploring work covering Italian, Austrian, Czech and Hungarian archives. In these depths the interested are led primarily by the Roman Habsburg diplomatic and ecclesiastical informers whose role remained unknown until now.
The usage of the monograph is helped by broad professional note apparatus, appendix of sources (pp. 339–390), chronology (pp. 391–400), the list of the used sources and books (pp. 401–416), index (pp. 419–426), English summary and table of contents (pp. 429–456 and 457–459).

Tusor Péter: Pázmány, a jezsuita érsek. Kinevezésének története, 1615–1616 (Mikropolitikai tanulmány) (CVH I/13), Budapest–Róma 2016, 460 p. + 6 melléklet (képek, facsimile, térkép)
A monográfia témája Pázmány Péter prímási kinevezése. A kora újkori magyar történelem egyik legnagyobb hatású makropolitikai tényének körülményeit, okait, célját, összefüggéseit elemzi a – korszakra Wolfgang Reinhard által kidolgozott – „mikropolitikai” megközelítésben, fordulatos eseményeit rekonstruálja kritikai igénnyel. A kérdés Pray Györgytől kezdve harmadfél százada áll a magyar historiográfia érdeklődésének homlokterében.
The Hungarian medieval studies and history of science repays its old debt by these two volumes of the Collectanea Vaticana Hungariae series that publishes a source collection essential for the Hungarian medieval church history researches. The medieval Hungary-related material of the Camera Apostolica was explored by József Lukcsics, the right hand of Vilmos Fraknói, at the beginning of the 20th century in the Vatican Secret Archives. However, his collection had not been published because of the structural problems of the 20th century Hungarian researches in the Vatican.
The volumes – made in teamwork of 9 research fellows of 7 Hungarian research institutes – contain this uniquely valuable exploration prepared for publication appropriate to the today’s academic demands, through which this almost inexhaustibly rich material becomes available both for Hungarian and international research. The source collection of more than one and a half thousand items offers the opportunity among others for the comparative study of the economic potential of late medieval Hungarian ecclesiastical institutions and benefices, for compiling the Hungarian ecclesiastical archontology of the age and for the analysis of the relations of the Hungarian church and the Italian banking houses.
The usage of the volumes is aided by rich apparatus (notes, Bibliography, Index and List of Documents) and by an extensive annotated English Summary Study.

A magyar medievisztika és történelemtudomány régi adósságát törleszti a Collectanea Vaticana Hungariae sorozat 9. és 10. volumenje, ugyanis egy, a középkori magyar egyháztörténeti kutatások számára nélkülözhetetlen forráscsoportot adnak közre. Az Apostoli Kamara középkori magyar vonatkozású iratanyagát a 20. század elején Fraknói Vilmos jobbkeze, Lukcsics József tárta fel a Vatikáni Titkos Levéltárban. Gyűjtése azonban a vatikáni magyar kutatások 20. századi strukturális problémái miatt végül nem került kiadásra. A kötetek ezen páratlanul értékes anyag napjaink tudományos igényének megfelelő sajtó alá rendezését tartalmazzák.
Hét hazai kutatóhely kilenc munkatársának összetett, többéves csapatmunkája révén immár a hazai és a nemzetközi kutatás számára is hozzáférhetővé válik e szinte kimeríthetetlenül gazdag matéria. A közel másfél ezer tételt tartalmazó forrásgyűjtemény lehetőséget kínál – többek között – a késő középkori magyar egyházi intézmények és javadalmak gazdasági potenciáljának összehasonlító vizsgálatára, a korszak magyar egyházi archontológiájának összeállítására, a magyar egyház és az itáliai bankházak kapcsolatának elemzésére.
A kötetek használatát gazdag apparátus (jegyzetek, bibliográfia, közel száz oldalas, adatolt személy- és helynévmutató, valamint iratjegyzék), a terjedelmes annotált angol nyelvű összefoglaló tanulmány segíti.

This collection of studies that was published on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Cardinal Péter Erdő, gives a survey about the present state and directions of the Hungarian research in the Vatican Archives. It contains 16 studies that show some interesting chapters of the relationship between Hungary and the Holy See, focusing on the period between the 15th and 20th centuries. Some of them indicate the directions of the 'Impetus' Research Programme.
The articles follow each other in chronological order and rich publication of sources belongs to each of them. Its authors are outstanding historians and young talented representatives of this profession. Both those, who are interested in the diplomacy of the Holy See in modern age and in the historiography of the Vatican research, and those, who just keen on the 20th century history in general, can find their account in it. The volume is completed by practical Index of names, places and Summaries in English.

Magyarország és a római Szentszék (Források és távlatok). Tanulmányok Erdő bíboros tiszteletére (CVH I/8), szerk. TUSOR PÉTER, Budapest–Róma 2012. 466 p. + 3 melléklet (képek, térkép)
A tanulmánykötet a vatikáni magyar kutatások aktuális állásáról, irányairól nyújt kutatási programadónak szánt áttekintést. Több tanulmány előpublikációként jelzi a Lendület-program során kidolgozni tervezett vatikáni tematikákat. Dedikációját a Collectanea Vaticana Hungariae fővédnöke, Erdő Péter bíboros 60. születésnapja magyarázza.
A közlemények időrendben követik egymást, s mindegyikhez illusztratív forrásközlés is tartozik. Szerzői a szakma jeles képviselői, illetve fiatal tehetségei. Többségükben a Lendület-program munkatársai.
The volume that was written in English language presents the relationship of the Apostolic See and the Hungarian Kingdom in the 15–16th century in the light of the documents of the consistory, the most important cultural institute of the age. In the examined period of time the most significant advisory and decision making body of the pope was the consistory. A good portion of its documents were preserved in the Vatican Secret Archives (Archivio Segreto Vaticano).
The first part of the book enumerates the history of the consistory and its complex operation, the filling of the consistorial benefices, the not easy process of the canonical examination of bishop-nominees, the course of business of the consistory and the subsequent issue of bulls. The second part of the work as the title of the volume also shows deals with the relations of the consistory and Hungary in the 15–16th century. It can be read in it about the presence of the Hungarian affairs on the agenda of the consistories and the filling of Hungarian ecclesiastical benefices. Besides it devotes many pages to the history of the ecclesiastical benefices before the battle of Mohács and in connection with it to the history of the Hungarian royal patronage and supremacy, furthermore, to the nature of the changes of the relations of Rome and the Hungarian church after the Battle of Mohács. All these are completed by rich note apparatus of Hungarian and foreign literature.
The content is demonstrated well by the twenty-one original Latin sources with English abstracts, the maps of the same good quality as the former volumes, and the six black and white photos that illustrate the sources. In the volume the work of the researchers is aided by an Index and a Hungarian Resume at the end of it.

A képekkel, térképekkel gazdagon illusztrált kötet a nemzetközi vatikáni kutatások neves, külföldi és hazai szakembereinek tanulmányait közli, melyek témája a legkülönfélébb aspektusok bemutatása Magyarország és a pápaság közös történetéből. A tanulmányok alapjául a Római Magyar Akadémia, a Viterbói Egyetem és a PPKE Egyháztörténeti Kutatócsoport által 2007. június 12-én Rómában közösen rendezett, a kötettel azonos című nemzetközi konferencia előadásai szolgálnak.
Az olasz, angol és német nyelvű írások szerzői között találjuk többek között a viterbói egyetem bölcsészkari dékánját, a római német történeti intézet igazgatóhelyettesét, a vatikáni apostoli könyvtár főkönyvtárosát, a római osztrák történeti intézet munkatársát, a bécsi, spalatói egyetem egy-egy professzorát, a grazi egyetem doktoranduszát.
This volume is already the second one of the Collectanea Vaticana Hungariae series, that publishes a work of the outstanding 20th century Hungarian church historian, Ferenc Galla
In this book he reveals the connections between Rome and the three-parts-divided Hungary (Transylvania, Habsburg and Ottoman Hungary) between 1550 and 1711 with the help of primary sources from the Vatican Archives, the extracts of which he gives in Hungarian, in Latin or in some cases in Italian, in timeorder. At the end of each abstract there is – usually abundant – collection of references of archive sources regarding the given case, from which the connection points of issues can be seen and what can be the basis of further research. The use and value of the volume for the research (scientific life) is given by the fact, that it contains many so far unpublished sources, pontifical provisions, faculties and commissions, mainly from the territory of Ottoman Hungary.
An Index of names and places makes the orientation in the book easy (pp. 173–196). Besides it contains also a Summary and Table of Contents in English (pp. 197–201).

This work written by the founding editor of the series presents through the example of Esztergom (Strigonium) the practice of the legal custom of crown-cardinals, that is, the evolution of regal influence upon the non-Italian members of the College of Cardinals, surveying the period between the 15th and 20th centuries.
The international utility of the volume, published in Hungarian, is ensured by the Italian and Latin source material from archives in Italy, Vienna, Brünn (Brno, CZ) etc., most of which is also quoted from verbatim and which are published in the Appendix (pp. 211–284), an index of the sources (pp. 285–290), a Bibliography (pp. 291–304), an Index (pp. 307–314), and an annotated Summary with chapter titles and a Table of Contents in English (pp. 315–334).
When the texts of the two codices were edited and copied at the beginning of the 16th century, the compilation of the collections of sample letters having numerous sub-types and functions had already had a history in the medieval Hungary. Undoubtedly, though, that such activity was influenced by Italy: from the studies of the Hungarian students at the Northern Italian universities in the 13th century, through the official samples given by the papal legates of the early 14th century to the activities of the Italian vicars at the turn of the 15–16th century. Thus, samples were attached to the theoretical knowledge, which was finally completed by the personal practice. The most important characteristic of the secular and church formularies was that the legal order and the principles of the local judicial practice were put down in writing. Yet, this was always influenced by the theoretical law material acquired in the higher education, effectively, the customary law was the basis of the tribunals’ function, in this respect all the countries had their sovereign legal practice. The early formularies resulted in particular collections in both – secular and ecclesiastical – fields; the appearance of the syntheses was the outcome of the end of the 15th century.
The two codices – the Nyási collection of Esztergom and the Beneéthy manuscript of Gyulafehérvár – are the representatives of the synthesis of the late Middle Ages in the ecclesiastical law, just as the Magyi-codex of Pécs in the practice of the notary public. Before 1512, the sample manuscript was compiled by Máté Beneéthy, the notary of the primatial court of Esztergom, through the collection and sensible selection (= making it like a form) of the forwarded documents. This material was copied by an unknown notary of the office of Vicar General Demeter Nyási in around 1521, who slightly rearranged it and after having omitting certain items, he completed it with numerous new items. Although, the original editing is of the former (sample) manuscript, the complemented version consists of the most complete documentation of the medieval church administration of Esztergom.
Our text edition is the first one to publish a complete manuscript of church administration in a critical edition. The Nyási-codex forms the basis of the editio; however, its apparatus and appendix make the acquaintance of the sample codex’s text possible. As neither the Beneéthy-codex, nor the Nyási version is perfect in itself, by the continuous checking of the two versions the publishers attempted the late medieval reconstruction of the Stylus Strigoniensis; they made their decision by the thorough examination of the problematic places concerning the occurring opportunities. The publication hereby follows the text constructional practice elaborated in classical philology; yet, the complete texts of the two manuscripts can be acquainted without any difficulties by the help of the complex apparatus. These are introduced to the readers along with minimal historical commentaries by indicating the parallel places and the extracts that had earlier been published.
The thorough study of the text enables the reader to get acquainted with the everyday life of the late medieval church administration, the practice of the church jurisdiction, the order of holding a synod, methods and circumstances of the supervising function of the canonical visits, the occurring questions relating to the clergymen, the complex connections of the monastic reform, the daily businesses of the ecclesiastical court (last will, loan, charitable gift, indulgence, beggar’s licence, excommunication, absolution, etc.) and finally, the main questions of the liturgical practice. The colourful picture also meets the claim of completeness, since there are few topics of the church life that were not covered by the compilation of the editors. The authors are planning to write a detailed commentary to the text-volume later; furthermore, a collection of the extant authentic documents on the activities of the vicar general and its comparison to the sample-collection.

A későbbiekben a szövegkötethez részletes kommentárkötet írását tervezik a szerzők, továbbá a helynöki tevékenység köréből korunkra maradt eredeti dokumentumok összegyűjtését és a mintagyűjteménnyel való szembesítését.
The volume that is a completion of a former collection of sources was provided with professional note apparatus, redacted and published as a supplement of the original Impetus-program. It contains altogether 448 letters that were written by György Lippay either as the Hungarian court chancellor of Vienna (1635–1642) or as the primate of Hungary (1642–1666) to the Palatines, to the Judges of the Royal Court, to the district captain-generals, etc. These allow an insight into the details of the dual exercise of power shared by the orders and the monarch in the middle third of the 17th century.
In addition, they illustrate through what kind of transmissions the governance of the country took place from the centre in Vienna, what the role of the leaders of the ecclesiastical order was in it and how their relation to the leaders of the “status saecularis” was. It is also presented what were the difficulties and pitfalls of the operation of this complex system (particularly as regards the fluctuating relationship of the primate and the Palatine, the two poles of the orders). The techniques that were used for ensuring the operability and making occasionally quick and efficient decisions can be learnt from them as well. Furthermore, the process of disintegration of the system that was formed at the beginning of the 17th century and was consolidated under the archbishoprics of Péter Pázmány – in which besides the Palatine the archbishop of Esztergom as the primate of Hungary played an unavoidable role in the governing of the Kingdom –, took place in the 1650–1660s and caused by the forming Habsburg absolutism, can be followed up.
The letters written as chancellor or primate contain essential information about the imperial court. As regards government history we can find a lot of important data on the role of the Hungarian governing bodies, the Hungarian Court Chancery, the Chamber of Pozsony and there are hints at the Hungarian Council in them. The preparation of the Diets is also an often recurring theme. From the numerous documents concerning the policy towards Transylvania can be outlined that Lippay despite all his efforts did not manage to replace Pázmány in the relations with György Rákóczy I.
Along with the political and government history aspects the military history dimension of the volume is also determining. In the source-material the ecclesiastical subject is actually secondary. The letters reveal the Hungarian prelate’s extremely diverse and complex system of social relations starting out from the contacts of legal and representational nature deriving from his social and official role to his relations of personal, friendly nature or to those of right the opposite. From these documents besides the historical role and relations of their writer we can also ascertain personal data and curiosities about him.

TUSOR PÉTER, „Írom kegyelmednek, mint igaz magyar igaz magyarnak”. Lippay György veszprémi és egri püspök, esztergomi érsek levelei magyar arisztokratákhoz, nemesekhez (1635–1665) (CST I/1), Budapest 2015. liv + 544 p. + 9 melléklet (hasonmások, térkép)
Kezdve a társadalmi, hivatali állásból fakadó jogi, reprezentációs jellegű érintkezések sorától egészen a személyes, mély barátság vagy épp ennek ellenkezőjének példáiig. A közlésre kerülő levelekből történelmi szerepe, kapcsolatai mellett számos személyes adatot, érdekességet is megtudhatunk írójukról.
The volume published for the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Second Vatican Council was born within the framework of cooperation with the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences. After the foreword of József Török and Péter Tusor the first part of the book contains studies that approach the Council and its reception from a new point of view, while its second part reveals the results of the considerable collection of data conducted as part of the mentioned cooperation.
The series of studies begins with the paper of Máté Gárdonyi, who gives a general overview about the searching for way of the theology in the socialist society according to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. Balázs Rétfalvi deals with the participation of Sándor Kovács Bishop of Szombathely at the council primarily on the basis of the rich source material kept in the Diocesan Archives of Szombathely. György Sági examines the career of Pál Brezanóczy with particular regards to his participation at the Second Vatican Council. Krisztina Tóth publishes the account written by Sándor Károly Klempa O.Praem to the clergy of his diocese that presents the events through the eyes of a participant.
The volume not only concentrates on the concrete participation at the Council, but it also gives a glimpse about the possibilities of realisation of its ideas and deliberations within the narrow frames that stood up by the communist authorities. Accordingly, Miklós Jávor examines an aspect of the official hierarchy, the Catholic and Protestant „peace organisations” and „peace activity” in the Kádár era. Péter Beke details the activity of the State Office for Church Affairs in Szolnok County in the 1970s. Finally, Bernát Benyhe presents the role of the Bokor community.
The Inventory-part of the book starts with the essay of Krisztina Tóth, who outlines the planning of exploration work, the followed method and the perspectives of the research. This study is followed by the chart about the legacy of the Council Fathers living in Hungary compiled by the research group. It serves as an excellent orientation point for the historians who deal with this subject. The volume contains also an Index of names and places and English summaries.

TÖRÖK JÓZSEF–TUSOR PÉTER–TÓTH KRISZITNA (szerk.): Katolicizmus Magyarországon a II. Vatikáni Zsinat korában, (CST II/1), Budapest 2015. pp. 436 + 2 melléklet (fényképek)
A II. Vatikáni Zsinat bezárása 50. évfordulója alkalmából kiadott kötet a Pápai Történettudományi Bizottsággal történő kooperáció keretében, illetve ennek nyomán született. Török József és Tusor Péter előszavát követően első része tanulmányokat tartalmaz, amik új szemszögből közelítik meg a zsinat és recepciója témakörét, míg második része a kooperáció keretében végzett tekintélyes anyaggyűjtés eredményét tárja az érdeklődők elé.
A tanulmányok sorát Gárdonyi Mátéé nyitja, aki egy általános áttekintést adva mutatja be a teológia útkeresését a „szocialista társadalomban” a II. Vatikáni Zsinat tanítása szerint. Rétfalvi Balázs Kovács Sándor szombathelyi püspök zsinati részvételével foglalkozik, melyhez többek között a Szombathelyi Egyházmegyei Levéltárban őrzött gazdag forrásanyagot vonultatja fel. Sági György Brezanóczy Pál életútját vizsgálja, különös tekintettel II. Vatikáni Zsinati részvételére. Tóth Krisztina Klempa Sándor Károly zsinati szakértőnek a zsinat harmadik ülésszakáról egyházmegyéje papjainak írt beszámolóját adja közre közvetlenül egy résztvevő szemszögéből láttatva azt.
A kötet nemcsak a konkrét zsinati részvételre koncentrál, hanem a határozatok, elképzelések megvalósításának lehetőségeit is felvillantja azokon a kereteken belül, amelyet a kommunista berendezkedés lehetővé tett.
