Personal researches focus mainly on domestic interiors, questioning relations among cultures of dwelling, domestic architecture and modernity, with specific attention to Nordic countries. I am also interested in museography and in preserving and diffusing collective memory and cultural identity, connecting the museographic issues with the domestic ambit. Since 2004, within the area of teaching and research “acting upon the existent”, I have been a promoter of PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE @ POLIMI, a research & operative group that puts the resources of Architecture in the service of the Public Interest.
I understand research and teaching as an integral part of design practice. During my career, I have tackled several subjects and topics, almost with an eclectic attitude, but with a very clear interest in Architecture and its way of knowing, that is, to respond to people’s needs while reflecting on the Discipline's principles.

Are they declarations of intent? Or cultural manifestos? Are they words from the past that have survived into the present, or words of the present in which the future is germinating?

hidden from the everyday gaze, in order to promote Le Grand Tour de l’Atlantique: an equipped path, similar to the great alpine tracks, where simple bivouacs allow
the division of the crossing into stages, acting as “points of support” (Stützpunkt).
This is a journey in the places of the Great War, in memory of those events, along an extraordinary coastline rich with countless elements of cultural and natural value,
but also in contact with monumental ruins full of history. The project explores ways of re-appropriating both these hidden interiors and their monumental landscapes.
Research Agenda: Open Lectures, coordinato dal prof. Alessandro Rocca, per il PhD Program in Architectural Urban Interior Design, Politecnico di Milano.
Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.
Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.
In this climate of trans-culturalism and transnationalism, a multiplicity of voices is required for the narration of different stories, which is why the ethnographic museum as it was in the colonial era is not appropriate anymore.
Ethnographic museums’ role today should be to express the contemporary age by representing all the different points of view through different ‘lens’.
A new approach to the museum and exhibition design, possibly enriched by the use of new successful tools, will be essential to acquire a new sensitivity with which to generate a new museum type.

Cultural industries, creative industries, creative cities.
Milan, the city of design. Milan, the city of immigrants.
While some of these concepts are widely known as they are faced by every citizen in most
of the cities around the world; some others are new, being defined and redefined.
The first aim of this work is that of studying an important global phenomenon: migration;
and together with this, diversity and hyper-diversity as their results on the cities, sometimes
also seen as negative consequences leading to social segregation showed not only socially
but also on the urban aspects of the cities’ profile.

While unconventional* and affordable housing practices can take many shapes and emerge from a diversity of household situations, the lack of an adequate offer by social and public housing policies reflects the inadequacies, dissatisfaction with or inaccessibility of conventional housing offers. A key hypothesis underlying the research is, therefore that unconventional solutions can be strategies to cope with such inadequacies and a lack of affordability, better responding to changing or intensifying demands. The intersection between the two levels, affordability and unconventionality, has yet to be explored in-depth and can provide valuable insights for reflecting on existing housing (design).
Research Units: Politecnico di Milano (PI: G. Postiglione), Università di Trieste (PI: Elena Marchigiani), Università di Bari (PI: Daniele Petrosino).
Research Group: Luca Basso Peressut (coordinator), Marco Borsotti, Mariella Brenna, Pier Federico M. Caliari, Imma Forino, Francesca Lanz, Lola Ottolini, Gennaro Postiglione, Roberto Rizzi, Pierluigi Salvadeo, Michele Ugolini.
_ _ Research Group Presentation: The Research Group’s frame of reference is represented by interior architecture in its various articulations (theory and history of interiors, urban interiors and open spaces, adaptive reuse, museography, set design, exhibition and furniture design) and on the different scales of critical reading and design intervention identified by the "human dimension" of space.
Interiors culture includes theoretical issues and historical-critical processes concerning inhabited spaces, the enhancement of existing heritage (tangible and intangible), and diffused systems of musealization and rehabilitation of the built environment. Following on from the Schools of Architecture of Politecnico di Milano’s tradition of research, the RG investigates and interprets this culture within an interdisciplinary dimension, which means the act of inhabiting as a large, complex and cross-cultural phenomenon involving spaces and equipment systems. From this expanded point of view, researches and projects on contemporary forms of inhabiting range from domestic interiors, workplaces, cultural, religious and leisure spaces, to large community services and urban and landscape open spaces, with a particular attention to the great historical and diffused built heritage, considered up to the scale of detail.
_ _ Research Group Competences: The Research Group develops theoretical and critical researches on the themes of interior architecture, with a particular attention to the contemporary perspective as well as the historical one.
Researches by design are focused on the reuse of built environments (buildings and open spaces), on diffused systems of territorial rehabilitation, and on the enhancement of cultural and archeological heritages. Particularly relevant are also the study and the design of public spaces, such as knowledge (education, museums, libraries), work (office, trade, production of goods), religious (churches and interreligious centers), and leisure places. Along with these topics, the RG focuses on the project of urban and landscape open spaces and great community services for culture (exhibitions, museography and set design).
Several RG’s members participated in the DRAIA PhD in Interior Architecture and Exhibition Design’s Board (active from V to XXVIII cycle) and are currently working within the Board of PAUI PhD in Architectural, Urban and Interior Design (active from XXIX cycle now ), both at Politecnico di Milano.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While going around, words spread ideas and stimulate images. In a steady process of self-reinvention, words are never definitive and fixed, on the contrary free and open to change. Words represent things and things can be an instrument to create new stories and ideas. As words transform with time in any society, country or economy we should look for the “key words” of Interiors: we will freeze-frame certain ideas, by clarifying and asserting them – always remembering they belong in an open panorama of thought.
