Reading serves as a basic building block of learning (Schlauch, 2014). It is a tool  we use to decode concepts around us. For students, enriching reading skills puts a lot  of opportunities on the table as they use it in different circumstances. One of these opportunities is to improve their vocabulary and comprehension. In addition, honing the reading skills helps students improve the other macro skills as this can be a stepping stone in writing and speaking. Unfortunately in the Philippines, average Filipino high school students‘ reading ability is two grade levels behind that of average American students (Gorospe, 1981). In fact, in the 2018 PISA results, the Philippines scored lowest among the 79 countries in terms of Reading Literacy. Fifteen-year olds tested in Reading literacy had an average score of 340 (out of a possible 600) versus the OECD average of 487. A breakdown of this score revealed that 81% were reading below level. And of this number, 24% were one level lower and 57% were two or more levels below (PISA and What it Revealed About the Quality of Our Education System, 2022). Moreover, in a study conducted by Tomas, Villaros, & Galman (2021), they found that Filipino students are at the frustration level where some perceived reading challenges are non-mastery of reading, presence of learners-at-risk, and no culture of reading. With this, back then until now, Filipino learners still struggle with reading.

There’s a lot of students who were suffering and complaining in their school works. Many teachers are giving to much activities or any requirements. Sometimes, the activities given by them are in a same deadline that’s why students became stress and feel very uncomfortable with the situation that he or she has to overcome.

Base on the researcher’s observation, Senior high students are faced with a tremendous amount of stress that comes from too much homework, long tests, and performance tasks. The workload is not actually the problem; rather it is the limited amount of time for these requirements. Another study conducted in 2000 on the effects of stress on health habits, health status, and self-esteem states that working hours and workloads are dominant sources of stress. According to studies, stress is a major factor to how a child performs academically.

A research done in 2000 on learning theories states that stress can enhance learning ability, but too much of it can cause physical and mental health problems and the academic achievement of a child is put to risk. A person can easily adapt; children are known to adapt better than adults. However, the adaptive abilities are greatly affected when the demands become too overwhelming. This then affects the students’ academic performance.
