Description

Background information:

  • I lost my laptop, so, I had to create new private/public key pair to be used to login to Toolforge.
  • I generated the new key pair and added it successfully to https://idm.wikimedia.org/keymanagement/

Problem:

  • I can't activate the new key using the https://idm.wikimedia.org/ interface.
  • When trying to activate the new key using the bitu interface it gives me a success message. (See screenshot.)

Screenshot 2024-08-15 201824.png (1×1 px, 89 KB)

  • When trying to suspend the old key, it gives me a success message. (See screenshot.)

Screenshot 2024-08-15 201949.png (1×1 px, 88 KB)

  • But when trying to login to Toolforge, it gives me an error message. (See screenshot.)

Note:

  • I originally added my old key (the one associated with the lost laptop) using the interface on Wikitech not the Wikimedia IDM (bitu) interface.
  • Since Wikimedia recently transitioned to using the idm.wikimedia.org interface, this is the first time for me to add a key using this interface.

Request:

  • Please activate my new key (key comment: "eddsa-key-20240812"), so that I am able to login to the Toolforge again.
  • Also, please remove the old key (the "ssh-rsa" key) from my account.

My User Info:

  • SSH access (shell) username: meno25
  • POSIX User ID: 3364

Thank you in advance

Hi, could you do a quick test for me? We had another user with a similar issue, but have yet to receive feedback regarding the fix.

On https://idm-test.wikimedia.org there's a version where the SSH key management have been reworked to handle an issue that seems really similar to yours. Could you try to login there and see if you can activate your key?

If not I'll just update it manually so you can get on with your work.

Thank you for a very good bug report, it's appreciated

Hi, Simon. Thank you very much for the quick response from your side. I really appreciate it. Sadly no, it is still the same problem with the https://idm-test.wikimedia.org/ interface. I took new screenshots for you:

I would be Really grateful if you can do this. I can't login to the Toolforge for several days now which is frustrating.

You're welcome. It is always a pleasure for me to help other other people. Best wishes to You Always

@Meno25 I manually updated your SSH key to the eddsa-key-20240812, the old key has been removed. I've also deleted the cached copies found in Bitu (idm.wikimedia.org). The new key "should" import correctly next time you access the SSH key section there.

Please test if you can login to Toolforge.

Thank you a ton @SLyngshede-WMF

Thank you for reporting. I think I have some idea as to why the key updated failed, so I'll try to add a test case and see if we can replicate the problem and get it fixed.
