[mediawiki/extensions/DiscussionTools@master] Add talk page empty state for temporary accounts' user talk pages

matmarex renamed this task from New empty state messages are needed for temp user talk pages to New messages are needed for empty state of temporary user talk pages.Apr 28 2023, 6:25 PM
matmarex moved this task from Backlog to Triaged on the DiscussionTools board.

@matmarex: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/New_discussion/Empty_pages has seven different messages. You have four existing messages here. Have you checked to make sure the others don't need to be updated?

The (existing) first sentence in "For yourself" – "People on Testwiki can use this talk page to post a public message for you and you will be notified when they do." – should have a comma in the middle ("...for you, and you will be...").

Would it be helpful to link to something (e.g., https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Temporary_accounts) in the new messages?

Should we add something like "You will lose access to this temporary account when it expires."? Would it be possible to add a countdown timer like "(maximum n days)"?

Actually, we are no longer using two of the seven after the changes from T288319. I removed them: https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk_pages_project%2FNew_discussion%2FEmpty_pages&diff=5906733&oldid=5326796

The remaining case is an article talk page, which doesn't need to be updated.

Proposed the change in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/DiscussionTools/+/914411.

Hmm, maybe. What makes me wonder is that none of the existing designs and messages I've seen have such a link. On the other hand, most of them were for the case where you're the one using (or about to use) the temporary account, while in our case we're in the scenario where you're visiting the talk page of the account. Maybe we should have one, or maybe it's a good idea to add it everywhere.

Should we add something like "You will lose access to this temporary account when it expires."? Would it be possible to add a countdown timer like "(maximum n days)"?

As far as I know there isn't any forced expiration on the temporary account (yet?), but if there was, this could be added. (However, we have no control over the browser or the user deciding to delete the cookies and lose the account this way, and no knowledge when it might happen.)

I wrote something at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Temporary_accounts Please link to it in all of the relevant messages. It might not be necessary eventually, but it will be helpful during the first year or so (until this becomes a familiar concept in the communities).

There is a maximum limit on the account's age. It's currently one year, and it will probably remain that long. However, there's a chance that it will become shorter. I think the shortest suggestion I've heard is 90 days.
