Biofiction has become a dominant literary form in recent years. But what exactly is it? And how did it come into being? The editor of the American Book Review asked me to guest-edit a special issue about biofiction in order to answer these and many other questions. In my introduction, I survey some of the major moments in the evolution of biofiction and I clarify how my contributors to this special issue have expanded our understanding of the literary form.
