Description
Hn & 2000/02043 ' THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT DEVICE
This invention relates to a therapeutic support device. More particularly this invention relates to a belt-type therapeutic device for use in lumbo-pelvic support. In particular, this invention relates to a belt-type therapeutic device to support the spine in the region of the lumbar spine or to support the pelvis in the region of the multifidus and the transverse abdominus.
‘Belt-type spinal support devices are well known in the medical (physiotherapy) industry.
These devices are commonly used in patients requiring spinal or pelvic support after surgery or as a result of injury.
The belt-type spinal support devices of the prior art are designed to fit over the area of the sacrum and the sacroiliac joints of the patient's spine and to fasten over the patient's abdomen. Some of these devices have a plurality of air chambers located on the underside of the belt in the region of the belt which makes contact with the patient's : spine. In use, these air chambers are inflated and function to exert a pressure on the
: patient's spine thereby providing spinal support. These devices may additionally have a plurality of straps, which are attached to the device over the air chambers and which function to increase the pressure exerted by the air chambers. To
The prior art devices are used purely for spinal support and the straps are only used over the spinal region to increase the pressure over the air chambers. It would be an advantage, to provide for a device, whereby the straps could also be used to exert a pressure on the pelvic region of a patient.
Furthermore, the prior art is a complex design that requires straps as well as a plurality of air chambers to bring about the desired result. It would therefore, be an advantage to : provide for a simplified therapeutic support device such that the air chambers are no longer required. 3 Furthermore, the reliance of the prior art on air chambers, requires that the air chambers "be fully functional, if the air chambers cease to function the device becomes ineffective.
Hence, it would be an advantage to provide for a device that does not rely on. the air chamber structure, as this structure may easily malfunction.
Furthermore, due to their complexity, the belt-type spinal support devices of the prior art are expensive to manufacture. It would therefore, be an advantage to provide for a simplified therapeutic support device so that high production costs are not incurred.
It is an object of this invention to provide for a lumbo-pelvic support device, which will at least in part obviate the problems set out above and achieve the advantages stated.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a therapeutic support device, the device including a belt and at least two straps which are removably attachable to the belt and which, in use, function to exert opposing compressive forces over an area of a patient's body to which the belt is fitted.
There is also provided for the belt to be fitable such that, in use, the compressive forces are exerted over a patient's spine. . There is also provided for the belt to be fitable such that, in use, the compressive forces are exerted over the patient's pelvic region.
There is also provided for the belt to be made of a light-weight fabric material.
There is also provided for the belt to be padded.
There is further provided for a belt end to be substantially parallel or alternatively for the belt end to be tapered.
There is further provided for the belt to be fitted with a fastening means, preferably, a hook and pile fastener. ‘
There is further provided for the straps to be made of an elastic material and to be removably attachable to the belt through an attachment means, preferably a hook and * pile fastener.
There is further provided for the straps to be removably connectable to each other via a connecting means, preferably a hook and pile connecting means.
The therapeutic support device is used in a method of improving load transfer and forced closure across the Lumbo-Pelvic region.
The support device is also used in a method of decreasing Lumbo-Pelvic and or Pelvic girdle pain.
The support device is also used in a method of improving stability across the pelvic area.
The support device is also used to increase sports or physical performance by improving load transfer across the lumbo pelvic area.
The support device is also used in a method of treatment of spinal injuries, preferably to promote post-operative support after lumbar spinal surgery. : .
The therapeutic support device is also used in a method of post-operative treatment in patients who have undergone abdominal surgery, preferably to promote post-operative support. " The therapeutic support device is also used in relieving lower back pain during or after pregnancy and as a pelvic support device during core stabilization training.
The invention will be described, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is perspective view of a therapeutic support device.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a therapeutic device, which has been fitted on to a patient, such that a compressive force is exerted over the patient's spine.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a therapeutic device, which has been fitted on to a patient, such that a compressive force is exerted over the patient's pelvis.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a strap, as fitted on to the therapeutic support device, showing the strap body and the bonding mechanism.
In the drawings, a therapeutic support device (10) is shown, in accordance with the invention.
The therapeutic support device (10) consists of a belt (12), made of a light weight fabric material, and at least two straps (14) which are removably attachable to the belt (12) and which, in use, function to exert opposing compressive forces over an area of a patient's body to which the belt (12) is fitted. The belt (12) is made of a light weight fabric material and is padded. The belt (12) may be constructed such that it is of a standard width in its center or at its ends or alternatively the belt (12) may taper at the ends. A tapered belt (12) is commonly used for support by pregnant woman as it is easier to apply and more comfortable. The straps (14) consist of a strap body (16) and a connection means (18), which in use, is used to connect the strap bodies (16) to each other, such that the strap bodies (16) exert a compressive force in the desired region of a patient's (22) body. The connection means (18) being a hook and pile fastner. - The straps (14) are made of an elastic material and are removably attachable to the belt (12) through an attachment means (21). The attachment means (21) being a hook and - pile fastener.
The belt (12) is fitable to the patient (22) by way of a fastening means (24). The fastening means (24) being a hook and pile fastener. The belt (12) fitable such that to the patient (22), in use, the compressive forces are exerted either over the patient's spinal region (26), as shown in figure 2 or over the patient's pelvic region (28), as shown : in figure 3.
The therapeutic support device (10) is used in a method of treatment of spinal injuries, preferably to promote post-operative support after lumbar spinal surgery as well as in a method of post-operative treatment in patients who have undergone abdominal surgery, preferably to promote post-operative support. "The therapeutic support device (10) is also used in relieving lower back pain during or : after pregnancy by relieving Lumbo-Pelvic and Pelvic girdle pain.
The therapeutic device (10) is also used and as a pelvic support device during core stabilization training by improving load transfer across the lumbo pelvic area thereby improving sports or physical performance in the patient (22).
The therapeutic device (10) is also used in a method of improving load transfer and -
- forced closure across the Lumbo Pelvic region thereby improving stability across the pelvic region of the patient (22).
Claims (25)
1. A therapeutic support device, comprising: a belt; and : at least two straps, which are removably attachable to the belt and which, in use function to exert opposing compressive forces over an area of : a patient's body to which the belt is fitted.
2. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in claim 1, where the belt is fitable such that, in use, the compressive forces are exerted over the patient's spine. :
3. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in claim 1, where the belt is fitable such that, in use, the compressive forces are exerted over the patient's pelvis.
4. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, where the belt is made of a light-weight fabric material.
5. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, where the belt is padded.
6. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein at least one belt end is substantially parallel in configuration.
7. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein at : least one belt end is tapered.
8. The therapeutic support device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7, where the belt is fitted to the patient by way of a fastening mechanism.
9. The therapeutic support device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8, where the . fastening mechanism, is a hook and pile fastener.
10. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9, where the straps are made of an elastic material.
11. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10, where the straps are removably attachable to the belt through an attachment mechanism.
12. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, where the attachment mechanism is a hook and pile fastener.
13. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 12, where the straps are removably attachable to each other via a bonding mechanism, such mechanism being located at each end of each of the straps.
14. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 13, where the bonding mechanism is a hook and pile bonding mechanism.
15. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 14, for use in a method of treatment of spinal injuries.
16. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 15, for use in a method to improve load transfer and forced closure across a Lumbo-Pelvic : region.
17. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 16, for use in a } method to decrease Lumbo-Pelvic and Pelvic girdle pain.
18. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 17, for use in a : method of improving stability across the pelvic area.
19. A therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 18, for use in a - method to increase physical performance by improving load transfer across the Co lumbo pelvic area.
20. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 19, for use in post-operative support after lumbar spinal surgery. ’
21. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 20, for use : in post-operative support after abdominal surgery.
22. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 21, for use in relieving lower back pain during pregnancy. E
23. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 22, for use : in relieving lower back pain after pregnancy.
24. The therapeutic support device, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 23, for use, as a pelvic support device during core stabilization training.
