Definitions
- the present invention relates to a chair for a mobile office mountable within a vehicle.
- the present invention has particular but not exclusive application for use in off-road motor vehicles.
- the chair will be described with reference to use for converting a vehicle cargo compartment to an office space, but this is by way of example only and the invention is not limited to this example.
- the present invention was developed in consideration of the lack of suitable office and communication facilities, particularly while out in the field in remote locations. It is understood that personnel performing remote work usually have access to off-road motor vehicles. These off-road motor vehicles can be modified with communication equipment allowing for connection to information networks and facilitating office tasks. However, space within a vehicle can be limited. Further, the existing seating positions within a vehicle are typically not suited for office work as the front seats have a steering wheel and driving equipment which limit the potential for work space and the boot or cargo compartment of the vehicle does not allow for a comfortable seating arrangement for an extended period of time.
- the present invention has been developed with the consideration of the available space within a vehicle.
- the inventor considered utilizing the space within the cargo compartment to obtain maximum usable space to perform office tasks for use in a remote location.
- the inventor identified that a cargo compartment had limited headroom and inadequate legroom but with experimentation and trial and error they found that by tilting a chair a worker in a reclined position will be able to use the available space more effectively.
- the present invention broadly resides in a chair for a mobile office mountable within a vehicle, said chair has a seat and a back for a person to sit thereon; said chair has a base that enables the seat and the back to tilt between an upright position and reclined position, wherein the seat and the back maintain a predetermined angle relative to one another while tilting.
- the present invention broadly resides in a chair for a mobile office mountable within a vehicle, said chair has a seat and a back for a person to sit thereon; said chair has a base that enables the seat and the back to tilt between an upright position and reclined position while the seat and the back maintain a predetermined angle relative to one another when tilting.
- the chair is preferably tilted about an axis parallel to a transverse plane of the vehicle.
- the chair is preferably rotated about an axis perpendicular to a transverse plane of the vehicle.
- the back is preferably oriented between 85 and 110 degrees while the seat is orientated between 0 and 40 degrees to the transverse plane of the vehicle. More preferably the back is orientated substantially 90 degrees to the seat and the seat is orientated substantially 30 degrees to the transverse plane of the vehicle.
- the preferred sitting orientation is a position that is most ergonomically comfortable for a particular user in the space provided.
- the chair is mounted to a mounting frame which is secured to the vehicle.
- the mounting frame is fitted into the cargo compartment and is restricted from moving in one or more directions due to the shape of the cargo compartment and the mounting frame. More preferably the mounting frame is securable to prevent unintended movement and therefore prevent damage to the vehicle, personnel or cargo.
- the mounting frame is securable to one or more anchor or child restraint fastening positions.
- the mounting frame has a shape that allows it to be fitted to vehicles of different makes and models.
- this form of the mounting frame fits multiple types of vehicles and/or multiple arrangements of attachment points.
- the mounting frame is a universal mounting frame.
- the mounting frame is preferably shaped to fit the cargo compartment of a particular make and model of the vehicle. Consequently, with the alternate form of the mounting frame, there can be several different forms of the mounting form where each are configured to fit within a vehicle cargo compartment with a particular arrangement of attachment points and/or anchor points.
- the chair connects to the mounting frame via the base.
- the chair is removably mounted to the mounting frame. Removal of the chair can free up space within the cargo compartment and allow for more efficient use of space within the cargo compartment.
- the chair mounts to the mounting frame via the chair base.
- the chair base is preferably attachable to and slidable along the mounting frame.
- the mounting frame is secured to a floor of the cargo compartment. In an alternative embodiment, the mounting frame is secured to a wall of the cargo compartment.
- the mounting frame is secured to the vehicle by the at least one anchor point. It is common for vehicles to be fitted with internal anchor points for securement of cargo and/or child safety seats. Preferably the mounting frame is secured to the vehicle attachment points.
- the mounting frame is removably secured to the vehicle. Removal of the mounting frame, in addition to removal of the chair and other components, allows the cargo compartment of the vehicle to be returned to a prior state.
- the mounting frame is configured to allow the mounted chair to move along the mounting frame.
- the chair can move forward and backward relative to the front and rear of the vehicle.
- the movement of the chair preferably allows repositioning of the chair within the cargo compartment.
- the chair can be repositioned to improve comfort or convenience for the person, such as to avoid sunlight.
- the chair can slide along the mounting frame.
- the chair is releasably mounted to the mounting frame. This allows for the mounting frame and chair to be disassembled and stored individually or at least be more efficiently stored to maximize remaining storage space.
- the chair has a base that is slidably mountable to a sliding rail of the mounting frame. The sliding of the chair can be advantageous for a user to move into and out of the chair.
- the base has a first locking means to secure the base to the sliding rail to prevent unintended movement.
- the first locking means preferably includes a retractable pin that can be positioned within one or more preset slots or apertures along the sliding rail.
- the pin prevents tilting movement relative to the transverse axis of the vehicle.
- the retractable pin has a laterally extending arm portion that forms a handle that can be used to facilitate retraction of the pin and repositioning of the pin. This feature provides a safety benefit as it prevents the chair from moving except when desired.
- the base has a second locking means to secure the chair at a desired tilt angle to prevent unintended movement.
- the second locking means preferably includes a retractable pin that can be positioned within one or more preset slots or apertures corresponding to different tilt angles.
- the pin prevents tilting movement relative to the transverse axis of the vehicle.
- the retractable pin has a laterally extending arm portion that forms a handle that can be used to facilitate retraction of the pin and repositioning of the pin.
- the second locking means is preferably actionable by the handle within arm’s reach of a person sitting in the chair.
- the chair has a first adjuster to control the tilt of the chair.
- the first adjuster is preferably actionable by a handle within arm’s reach of a person when they are seated on the chair. More preferably the first adjuster forms part of the second locking means.
- the chair has a second adjuster to control the angle of the chair back with respect to the seat.
- the chair has a folded configuration which reduces the overall dimensions of the chair so it can be easily stored.
- the second adjuster allows the chair to have different configurations with respect of the position of the seat relative to the back thereby accommodate different preferred seating positions.
- the chair can rotate about an axis perpendicular to a transverse axis of the vehicle.
- the chair can rotate 360 degrees.
- the rotation of the chair preferably assists a person to move in and out of the chair.
- the rotation can facilitate repositioning of a seated person to provide a more comfortable sitting position such as avoiding strong light from the late afternoon sun.
- the base has a third locking means to secure the chair at a desired rotational position.
- the third locking means preferably includes a retractable pin that when engaged prevents rotation. More preferably the retractable pin has a laterally extending arm portion that forms a handle that can be used to facilitate retraction of the pin and repositioning of the pin.
- the third locking means is preferably actionable by a handle within arm’s reach of a person sitting in the chair.
- the chair has a desk that has a useable working surface when the desk is placed in an operational position.
- the desk has a working surface that can support a tablet, a laptop, a book, a notepad or a similar work related item.
- the desk is preferably integral with the chair or attachable to the chair.
