Description

WINDOW OR DOOR FRAME ASSEMBLY
TECHNICAL FIELD
[001 ] The present invention relates to relates to building construction and in particular relates to an improved window frame assembly.
BACKGROUND
[002] Any references to methods, apparatus or documents of the prior art are not to be taken as constituting any evidence or admission that they formed, or form part of the common general knowledge.
[003] It is usually necessary for manufacturers or fabricators of shop assembled window frames or door frames to know the wall thickness of the walls in which the frames are to be installed before producing such frames. With knowledge of the wall thicknesses, the manufacturer or fabricator can then increase or decrease the jamb width before the unit is delivered to the job. Because the ripping or furring of frame jambs to accommodate various wall thicknesses is a very costly procedure. It is economically impractical to so customize jambs for the wide variety of wall thicknesses that might be encountered.
[004] Efforts have been made to alleviate this problem somewhat by stocking several different jamb widths sized for some of the most commonly encountered wall thicknesses, but this has naturally increased the size of inventories that must be maintained by frame suppliers and still does not solve the basic problem of making readily available relatively low cost frames which can be properly fitted to the desirable wide variety of wall thicknesses. Such standardized jamb thicknesses as have been stocked by conventional suppliers represent a severe practical limitation on use of available building materials such as decorative wall boards, tiles, and the like, which would produce building wall thicknesses different from these chosen standard thicknesses.
[005] Another problem with many window and door frame assemblies, and with aluminium and vinyl siding which border these frame assemblies, is that they permit water to drain behind the siding itself, creating damage to the house or other structure. Typically, a window or door frame is mounted within an opening in a structure and then vinyl or aluminium siding is secured about the frame. It is common in the industry to mount J-channel about the periphery of the window frame and onto the underlying structure and then to secure the siding directly to the J-channel. Unfortunately, present J-channel construction, in combination with the way the siding is mounted, permits water to travel behind the siding, causing structural damage.
[006] In view of the above, it is desirable to provide a window frame assembly or a door frame assembly which will permit adjustment of the effective jamb width of the frame to an infinite variety of wall thicknesses whilst also preventing water damage.

[027] The profiled edge portion 142 comprises a curved configuration and is generally turned away from the plane of the base portion 141 of the sill member 140 in an upwardly or downwardly direction. The channel 125 comprises an“L” shaped or “J” shaped configuration. The channel 125 is structured to provide an opening that extends lengthwise along the length of the jamb member 120 to receive the curved edge 142 of the sill member 140. Typical installation of the sill member 140 would involve inserting the edge 142 into the opening of the channel 125 and pushing the base portion 141 of the sill member 140 which results in upward or downward movement of the edge portion 142. The curved shape of the edge portion 142 in combination with the L-shaped or J-shaped hollow channel 125 provides a straightforward way of installing the sill member 140. The width of the base portion 141 can be varied depending on the thickness of the building wall. The base portion 141 also includes a stop member or a lug member 147 projecting from the base portion 141 of the sill member 140 to abut against an end portion of channel 125 and limit inward movement of the edge portion 142 of the sill member 140.
[028] An outward face of the dependent portion 143 of the sill member 140 includes further fastening arrangements to receive a moulding panel 150. In the preferred embodiment, grooves 149 extending along the length of the sill member 140 are provided to receive and engage tongue members 152 of the moulding member 150 to conceal the dependent portion 143 of the sill member 140.
[029] As a result of the provision of the channel 125 and the aforementioned configuration of the sill member 140, fabricators or installers do not need to fabricate window frames or door frames for specific wall thicknesses. Instead, a standard sized window frame (such as window frame 100) can be suitably used for a range of wall thicknesses by merely customizing the width of the base portion 141 of the sill member 140. It is much more straightforward to fabricate profiled sill panels that suit a specific wall thickness in conjunction with a standard sized window frame 100 as shown in the accompanying figures.
[030] The window frame assembly 100 also includes channels containing drains and openings or outlets that are operatively arranged to constrain and divert water away from an interior portion of the frame to an exterior portion of the frame assembly 100 as will be explained in the foregoing sections.
[031 ] Referring to Figures 3 and 4, water droplets (denoted by W) have been shown. As discussed in the earlier sections, water droplets such as W may enter the internal space in between the window frame 100 and the SIP building panel as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The frame assembly 100 comprises a first channel (such as J-shaped or L-shaped channel 172-Figure 3 or 272-Figure 4) positioned along an upper portion of the window frame, the upper portion being located adjacent a wall portion defining the building wall opening of the building wall. The first channel 172 or 272 slopes in an outwardly direction to direct the water away towards an exterior portion of the frame assembly 100 via an outlet such as outlets 175 or 275. In some embodiments (specifically referring to Figure 3), a second L-shaped or J-shaped channel such as channel 174 may be provided below the first channel 172 to allow water to drain into the second channel 174 under gravity through the transfer opening/outlet 175 provided in the frame assembly. In some sections, such as section 6 (refer to Figures 1 and 2), an additional outlet 177 may be arranged relative to the second channel 174 to allow the drained water from the second channel 174 to be released out to the exterior portion of the frame (as shown by the arrows). A downward sloping flashing member 176 may be provided to receive water flowing out of the additional outlet 177 and direct the water away from the frame assembly 100. In some instances, an external drain channel may be mounted on an exposed external face of the frame assembly 100 that receives some of the water received on the flashing member 176 under gravity. The external drain may extend along a length of the window framel 00 (or door frame) and it is important to note that the external drain 176 is being positioned below the first and second channels 172 and 174 for receiving water from said first and second channels 172 and 174 under gravity and directing the water away along an exterior portion of the frame assembly.
[032] The window assembly 100 also provides some other additional benefits or advantages. The provision of the lug member 147 on the sill member 140 prevents overtightening and also ensures that the moulding member 150 positioned thereon is levelled and thereby provides an excellent fit and finish.
[033] The sill member 140 functions as an anchor and assists with fixing the window or door assembly 100 in the aforementioned configuration. The provision of the sill member 140 allows an installer to fix the window around its complete circumference into the wall so the window assembly 100 can stand far greater loads of internal or external pressure than a conventional window fixing (which relies on the sheer of a couple of skew nails or screws fixing the window in place).
[034] As outlined in previous sections, the invention is not limited to use with window frame assemblies and may also be utilised for door frame assemblies. Figure 7 illustrates a sectional view of a door frame assembly 300. Like reference numerals denote like features that have been previously described in some of the earlier sections. The jamb member 120 includes channelled portions as previously discussed to receive a profiled edge 142 of the anchor or sill member 140 in a manner as previously described in the earlier section with reference to the window frame assembly 100.
[035] In compliance with the statute, the invention has been described in language more or less specific to structural or methodical features. The term“comprises” and its variations, such as “comprising” and “comprised of” is used throughout in an inclusive sense and not to the exclusion of any additional features. [036] It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to specific features shown or described since the means herein described comprises preferred forms of putting the invention into effect.
[037] The invention is, therefore, claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the proper scope of the appended claims appropriately interpreted by those skilled in the art.
