Description

INTRANASAL DEVICE FOR WEIGHT LOSS
Description
Technical Field
The present invention finds application in the technical field of devices for therapeutic and medical use and has particularly for object an intranasal device suitable to be introduced into the nasal cavities to promote weight loss.
The invention also relates to a method for a cosmetic slimming treatment which can be implemented by means of the above device.
State of the art
As known, many people experience enormous difficulties in undertaking a balanced diet aimed at allowing a more or less consistent weight loss not only for reasons of a merely physiological nature but very often also for motivational and psychological reasons.
For this reason, to be able to undertake a balanced food style, or a so-called diet, you need to find the right motivational thrust and be able to counteract the effects of stress which is daily subjected to and that leads to follow self-made dieting or crash diets that can be deleterious and counterproductive.
Currently there are several products on the market that try to suppress the sense of hunger and generate a sense of satiety by taking specific substances and food supplements.
However, these products have proved to be not very effective because their action, besides being mild, is significantly influenced by the metabolism of the person who takes such substances, so that a product suitable for one person may not be effective for others. The cost of these products and the possible effect of addiction must not be underestimated.
From a research carried out by the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Berkeley {The sense of smell impacts metabolic health and obesity - Cell Metabolism 2017), evidence has emerged on the connection of the sense of smell with fat metabolism and the energy balance of the body.
The experimental study has shown that the smell of food can have effects on the way it is assimilated and that the suppression of the sense of smell through the removal of olfactory neurons would counteract the tendency to gain weight, accelerating the processes of weight loss.
In fact, the alteration of the perception of food alters the way in which the brain decides to manage the overall energy balance of the organism, through the activation of the disposal of fats.
The experiments were performed on supercharged mice by comparing mice to which the sense of smell had been suppressed with mice to which instead the sense of smell had been enhanced through the manipulation of olfactory neurons.
The reversible ablation of olfactory sensory neurons (OSN) would stimulate the sympathetic nerve with consequent activation of β-adrenergic receptors present on white and brown adipocytes and promotion of lipolysis.
The researchers observed that animals in which the sense of smell had been suppressed by the removal of olfactory neurons tended not only to gain significantly less weight than others but also to lose weight faster if they were overweight.
The absence of the sense of smell seems, therefore, to counter the effects of high calorie diets in mice. In fact, mice lacking olfaction bred with high calorie diets increased weight by an average of 10%, compared to 100% of normal mice. Conversely, mice to which the sense of smell had been artificially enhanced through the manipulation of olfactory neurons tended to accumulate fat.
Scope of the invention
The object of the present invention is to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks by providing an intranasal device for weight loss which is simple and easy to apply. A particular object is to provide an intranasal device for weight loss adapted to selectively inhibit the sense of smell to promote slimming without food restrictions. Another particular object is to provide a method for the cosmetic slimming treatment of simple and convenient application.
Said objects, as well as others which will appear clearer later, are achieved by an intranasal device for weight loss which, according to claim 1, comprises at least one first elastic clip having an inner arm adapted to be inserted into a nasal cavity and at least partially soaked with at least one scented substance or mixture of scented substances.
In the present text, the terms "inner" and "outer" are used only for clarifying purposes and with reference to positions during the use of the parties to whom these terms refer, without limitative purpose.
Thanks to this combination of features, the scented substance will exert at least partial inhibition action or masking of the smell.
The resulting anosmia/hypo smia will determine a weight loss effect without quantitative or qualitative restrictions, because it will act on the sensory systems and therefore on the accumulation of calories introduced with food.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a method for the cosmetic slimming treatment according to claim 13 that can be implemented by means of the aforementioned intranasal device.
Advantageous embodiments of the invention are obtained according to the dependent claims.
Brief disclosure of the drawings
Further features and advantages of the invention will become more evident in the light of the detailed description of a preferred but not exclusive configuration of an intranasal device for weight loss according to the present invention, shown as a non- limiting example with the aid of the drawing table wherein:
FIG. 1 is a front view of the device.
Best mode of carrying out the invention
The accompanying figures show a preferred but not exclusive embodiment of the intranasal device for weight loss according to the invention, whose aesthetic configuration is merely exemplary and not limitative of the present invention, being able to assume any shape without particular limitations.
Moreover, the device according to the present invention may be designed to be inserted simultaneously in both the nasal cavities or in a single cavity, requiring the use of two distinct devices for the two cavities, as will appear clearer later.
In its most essential form, the intranasal device for weight loss according to the invention, generally designated by 1, comprises at least one first elastic clip 2 having an inner arm 3 adapted to be inserted in one of the user's nasal cavities to be secured thereon.
Furthermore, the inner arm 3 is at least partially soaked with at least one scented substance or mixture of scented substances suitable for at least partial inhibition action or masking of the smell.
In a preferred but not limiting way, the scented substance, or the substances composing the mixture, may be selected from essential oils and mixtures of essential oils.
Advantageously, such essential oils may be selected from high volatility essential oils, also commonly known as top notes, such as sweet and bitter orange essential oils, bergamot, cajeput, camphor, cardamom, caraway, cedar (fruit), citronella, cumin, estragon, eucalyptus, lemongrass, lemon, litsea, mandarin, peppermint, petitgrain, grapefruit, verbena.
It is understood that this list is purely exemplary and not limiting, being able to use other smells or fragrances and in particular other essential oils with lower volatility, such as so-called mid notes and base notes, although not preferable with respect to the most volatile essential oils due to their greater intensity and persistence which could thus create discomforts in the most sensitive people.
Fig. 1 shows a particular embodiment of the device 1 wherein the single elastic clip 2 also comprises an outer arm 4 adapted to be externally applied on the nasal wing corresponding to the nasal cavity of the respective inner arm 3 to cooperate therewith and secure the clip 2 on the user's nose.
Conveniently, the inner arm 3 and the outer arm 4 will be mutually constrained or hinged at respective end portions designed to remain outside the nasal cavity to allow their reciprocal elastic flexion or a controlled reciprocal rotation such as to allow the opening of the clip 2 necessary for insertion of the inner arm 3 in the nasal cavity and the subsequent closure for securing the clip 2 on the nose.
The inner arm 3 has a linear shape and is provided with a second free end which may be made of a porous material or be associated with a pad 5 made of porous material or adapted to be soaked with the selected scented substance or mixture. In turn, the outer arm 4 will be provided at its free end with an enlargement 6 adapted to cooperate with the pad 5 to make the position of the clip 2 more stable on the nasal wing.
According to the preferred but not exclusive embodiment of the figures, the outer arm 4 has an arched central portion 7 having a convexity directed towards the inner arm 3 for compressing the nasal wing therewith and securing the clip 2 to the nose.
In this first preferred but not exclusive embodiment of the invention, the device will comprise a single clip 2 or it may be composed of two clips 2, 2' substantially identical to each other and adapted to be positioned in distinct nasal cavities in mutually specular positions, in use, with respect to the sagittal plane of the user.
According to a not shown variant, the first and second clips may be mutually connected for their simultaneous insertion in the corresponding nasal cavities.
According to a further variant, also not shown, the first and second clips will comprise only the respective inner arms connected to each other at respective ends in an elastic manner and each having a free end that can be inserted into the corresponding nasal cavity and soaked with a scented substance as described above.
Regardless of the embodiment adopted, the clips 2, 2' may be made of any material suitable to be introduced into the nasal cavities.
This material may itself be soaked of the scented substance or mixture or be at least partially coated with other soakable material, such as cotton wool or similar materials. In a particular embodiment the clips 2, 2' may be made of biocompatible or hypoallergenic polymeric materials added with the scented substance or mixture directly during the producing.
The device and the method according to the invention are susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, all of which are within the inventive concept expressed in the appended claims. All the details may be replaced by other technically equivalent elements, and the materials and tools may be different according to requirements, without departing from the scope of protection of the present invention.
