Description

A FIRE PREVENTION SYSTEM FOR AN ARCHIVING AND STORING GROUP OF A COMPACTABLE TYPE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the technical sector regarding fire prevention systems, with particular reference to application thereof in archiving and storing groups of a compactable type.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
Document US 5 160 190 describes a fire prevention system for an archiving and storing group of a compactable type comprising: - a plurality of shelving units mutually flanked and internally provided with shelves which define compartments for positioning articles to be archived and stored;
- guide means for enabling a sliding of the shelving units in mutual nearing and/or distancing in a direction that is perpendicular to the planes containing the shelving units;
- activating means able to move each shelving unit with respect to the guide means, between an open configuration in which the shelving unit defines, with an adjacent shelving unit, a corridor for access to the shelving units and the compartments of at least a shelving unit, and a closed configuration in which the shelving unit is arranged with respect to the adjacent shelving unit so as to prevent access to the shelving units and to the compartments of the shelving units. -
In known ways described in document KR 100688124, the edges of each shelving unit which delimit a compartment comprise a sealing tape gasket which in the closed configuration is subjected to compression between the corresponding edge and the facing shelving unit.
This sealing tape gasket can be made of a fire-resistant material, for example of the fire retardant type or alternatively of the swelling type which tends to increase its volume in the presence of heat. As regards preventative measures against fire risk, generally the above- mentioned archiving and storing groups of a compactable type are protected by automatic sprinkler systems normally known by the name of sprinklers.
A sprinkler system comprises a network of tubes containing fluid constantly at pressure, to which are connected the sprinkler heads which are closed off using elements that are sensitive to colour.
Generally the pressurised fluid in the tubes is constituted by water (wet systems) and alternatively the fluid can also be constituted by air (dry systems). In the case of wet systems the tube network is connected to a water source which guarantees supply to the sprinklers with predetermined flow rate, pressure and dispensing time parameters.
The wet systems therefore function automatically and this requires an equally automatic water supply. In the case of a fault or poor pressure levels in the water network, wet systems can be poorly effective.
They can at most protect the spatial region external of the archiving and storing groups, without being able to operate effectively in the internal spatial region, where the archived and stored articles are housed. A further drawback of the wet systems consists in the long intervention time and the possible damage produced by the volume of water sprinkled into the rooms.
These wet systems are relatively voluminous and are not recommended in the presence of electrical plant and apparatus supplied by current (computers, cables, plugs, etc.).
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The aim of the present invention is to obviate the above-described drawbacks by providing a fire prevention system for an archiving and storing group of the compactable type, able to protect the archived articles stored in the internal spatial region of the group.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a fire prevention system which can ensure a particularly limited volume and extremely rapid intervention times.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a fire prevention system which can ensure a particularly limited volume and extremely rapid intervention times.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a fire prevention system which can ensure a rapid reset time following an intervention operation.
The above-indicated aims are obtained with a fire prevention system for an archiving and storing group of a compactable type, the group comprising: a plurality of shelving units mutually flanked and internally provided with shelves which define compartments for positioning articles to be archived and stored; guide means for enabling a sliding of the shelving units in mutual nearing and/or distancing in a direction that is perpendicular to the planes containing the shelving units; activating means able to move each shelving unit with respect to the guide means, between an open configuration in which the shelving unit defines, with the adjacent shelving unit, a corridor for access to the shelving units and the compartments of the shelving units, and a closed configuration in which the shelving unit is arranged with respect to the adjacent shelving unit so as to prevent access to the shelving units and to the compartments of the shelving units; the fire prevention system comprising: storing means for storing a pressurised extinguishing agent; a plant for containing the pressurised extinguishing agent and supplied by the storing means; the plant comprising a tubing made of a heat-sensitive material arranged internally of each shelving unit and able to yield mechanically in the portion thereof arranged in proximity of a combustion due to heat generated by the combustion, so as to enable outflow of the pressurised extinguishing agent contained in the plant.
In particular embodiments, the fire prevention system of the invention comprises one or more of the following characteristics, considered singly or in combination:

• a valve group can be included, interposed between each canister containing the extinguishing agent and the corresponding heat-sensitive tubing;
• the valve group is normally open during the fire prevention steps;

The characteristics of the invention are specified in the following with particular reference to some preferred, but not exclusive, embodiments, with reference to the accompanying tables of drawings, in which:
- figures 1 , 2 illustrate two perspective views in corresponding operative configurations of a fire prevention system for an archiving and storing group of a compactable type, equipped with the fire prevention system of the invention;
- figure 3 is a lateral view of a shelving unit of the archiving and storing group provided with a first embodiment of the fire prevention system;
- figure 3A represents the diagram of the fire prevention system indicated in figure 3 and some larger-scale details of the fire prevention system;
- figure 4 is a lateral view of a shelving unit of the archiving and storing group provided with a second embodiment of the fire prevention system;
- figure 4A represents the diagram of the fire prevention system indicated in figure 4 and some larger-scale details of the fire prevention system. DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
With reference to the above tables, reference numeral 1 denotes in its entirety a fire prevention system for an archiving and storing group 2 of a compactable type.
According to known ways described in the introductory preamble, the archiving and storing group (2) comprises:
- a plurality of shelving units (3) mutually flanked and internally provided with shelves (4) which define compartments (5) for positioning articles to be archived and stored;
- guide means (6) for enabling a sliding of the shelving units (3) in mutual nearing and/or distancing in a direction (Y) that is perpendicular to the planes containing the shelving units (3);
- activating means (7) able to move each shelving unit (3) with respect to the guide means (6), between an open configuration (CA) (figure 2) in which the shelving unit (3) defines, with an adjacent shelving unit (3), a corridor (8) for access to the shelving units (4) and the compartments (5) of at least a shelving unit (3), and a closed configuration (CC) (figure 1 ) in which the shelving unit (3) is arranged with respect to the adjacent shelving unit (3) so as to prevent access to the shelving units (4) and to the compartments (5) of the shelving units (3).
In an entirely novel way the fire prevention system (1 ) comprises:
• storing means (9) for storing a pressurised extinguishing agent;
• a plant (10) for containing the pressurised extinguishing agent and supplied by the storing means (9); · the plant (10) comprising a tubing (1 1 ) made of a heat-sensitive material arranged internally of each shelving unit (3) and able to yield mechanically in the portion thereof arranged in proximity of a combustion due to heat generated by the combustion, so as to enable outflow of the pressurised extinguishing agent contained in the plant (10). The tubing (1 1 ), preferably realised using a heat-sensitive polymer, thus has the double function of detecting the fire and distributing the extinguishing agent into the combustion zone.
In a preferred embodiment, the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) is arranged in the upper region of the compartments (5), preferably fixed to the shelving (4) of the shelving units (3), for example by straps and relative strap holders fixed using self-tapping screws.
The storing means (9) of the extinguishing agent are preferably arranged externally of the shelving units (3).
The storing means can comprise a plurality of canisters (90) containing the extinguishing agent, each being arranged on the external part of the wall (30) of a corresponding shelving unit (3) and being able to supply the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1) arranged internally of the shelving unit (3) concerned.
Each canister (90) can be fixed to the corresponding wall (30) of the shelving unit (3) by means of a support bracket of known type (figures 3, 4). In a variant embodiment of the archiving and storing group (2), the shelving units (3) can comprise walls (30) realised using panels made of metal materials, i.e. of REI and/or RE type materials, specifically fire-resistant.
In particular, REI panels represent a construction element that, for a predetermined time, keeps its mechanical resistance, its resistance to flames and hot gases, as well as its heat insulation (i.e. the tendency to reduce the transmission of heat).
Likewise, RE panels represent a construction element that, for a predetermined time, keeps its mechanical resistance, its resistance to flames and hot gases.
Figures 3, 3A illustrate a first embodiment of the fire prevention system (1 ) of the invention, wherein the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) comprises a branch (1 1 a) that extends into all the compartments (5) of the shelving unit (3).
The branch (1 1 a) of the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) extends with a serpentine shape into the upper region of the compartments (5) and the internal surfaces of the walls (30) of the shelving unit (3).
With reference to figure 3A, the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) crosses the wall (30) of the shelving unit (3) by means of a cable guide (detail B), for example made of plastic, while the branch (1 1 a) is closed at the free end by an end-line cap (detail C).
Figures 4, 4A illustrate a second embodiment of the fire prevention system (1 ) of the invention, wherein the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) comprises a pair of branches (1 1 a, 1 1 b) arranged in parallel, each of which extends into a corresponding group, upper or lower, of compartments (5) of the shelving unit (3).
Each branch (1 1 a, 1 1 b) of the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) extends with a serpentine shape into the upper region of the compartments (5) and the internal surfaces of the walls (30) of the shelving unit (3).
With reference to figure 4A, the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) crosses the wall (30) of the shelving unit (3) by means of a cable guide (detail B), for example made of plastic, following which the pair of branches (1 1 a, 1 1 b) divides from a T- shaped derivation element.
Each branch (1 1 a, 1 1 b) of the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) is closed at the free end by a corresponding end-line cap (detail C). With reference to figures 3A, 4A, in both embodiments of the fire prevention system (1 ) a valve group (91 ) can be included, interposed between each canister (90) containing the extinguishing agent and the corresponding heat- sensitive tubing (1 1).
The valve group (91 ) is normally open during the fire prevention steps and comprises a closing tap (91 a) activatable during maintenance of the heat- sensitive tubing (1 1 ) of the plant (10) downstream.
The fire prevention system (1 ) of the invention can be equipped with a pressure gauge (not illustrated) for measuring a pressure internally of the corresponding canister (90) and of the heat-sensitive tubing (1 1). According to a particular embodiment, the pressure gauge can cooperate with signalling means (for example acoustic and/or luminous and/or electronic) able to signal any pressure variations detected internally of the corresponding canister (90), imputable both to a slow unloading (which requires maintenance) and to a rapid unloading (which is evidence of an intervention operation). The acoustic and/or luminous signalling means can signal the fault at the location of the archiving and storing group (2), and the electronic signalling means can signal the fault remotely (for example in a control room).
The extinguishing agent advantageously comprises a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), preferably heptafluoropropane HFC-227ea (CF3CHFCF3), a gas which internally of the pressurised canister (90) is liquefied.
If a fire were to break out internally of a shelving unit (3) of the archiving and storing group (2), the portion of tubing (1 1 ) made of a heat-sensitive material arranged in proximity of the combustion mechanically yields and consequently enables the outflow of the pressurised extinguishing agent contained in the plant (10) and the canister (90). The heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) thus has the double function of detecting the fire and distributing the extinguishing agent into the combustion zone.
On the basis of what is set out above, it is clear how the fire prevention system for an archiving and storing group of the compactable type is perfectly able to protect the archived articles stored in the internal spatial region of the group.
This is owing to the use of a plant comprising a tubing made of a heat-sensitive material arranged internally of each shelving unit and able to yield mechanically in the portion thereof arranged in proximity of a combustion due to heat generated by the combustion, enabling automatic outflow of the pressurised extinguishing agent contained in the storing canister.
The fire prevention system of the invention is further able to ensure a particularly limited volume and extremely rapid intervention times.
This is due to the use of an extinguishing agent comprising a hydrofiuorocarbon (HFC), preferably heptafluoropropane HFC-227ea. The extinguishing agent containing HFC in fact enables very timely fire protection intervention (less than one minute -60 seconds) and a small plant volume.
It enables, among other things, preventing any residue following the outflow of the extinguishing agent and offers only a negligible toxicity, being particularly suitable for protecting rooms normally inhabited by humans.
The extinguishing agent containing HFC is further electrically non-conductive and ecologically acceptable with ODP=0 (Ozone Depletion Potential).
The use of shelving units having walls realised using panels made of REI and/or RE type materials, specifically resistant to fire, enables minimising (if not annulling) the probability that a fire breaking out externally of the archiving and storing group in the closed configuration can propagate to inside the shelving units of the group.
Should this occur the fire prevention system of the invention would quickly intervene, as described in the foregoing. The fire prevention system of the invention is further able to prevent any residual fouling following the step of intervention.
The time needed for resetting the fire prevention system of the invention is very short, following the intervention, as it is simply necessary to load or replace the canister which intervened and the corresponding portions of heat-sensitive tubing (1 1 ) which were damaged by the heat generated in proximity of the combustion (for example using two connector fittings).
