Description
LIGHTING SYSTEM FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION PLATE
[0001] The present invention refers to a lighting system for a motor vehicle registration plate comprising at least one light source and a lens associated therewith, said light source emitting at least two light beams.
[0002] Lighting system for a motor vehicle registration plate of the aforementioned kind has been disclosed in the publication of the patent application No. EP 1 920 973 A2, for instance. Disclosed is a lighting system comprising at least one light source accompanied by a lens, said light source emitting majority of the light as a main beam and minority of the light as a secondary beam. Said lens comprises a an inner surface and an outer surface that enable the main and secondary beams to be redistributed on different areas of the registration plate of the vehicle. A drawback of known solution is represented by a fact that such a lighting system is formed to light the registration plate of the vehicle only, wherein the neighbouring areas of the back of the vehicle remain unlit.
[0003] It is the object of the present invention to create, in a simple and a price friendly manner a new and widely useful lighting system for a motor vehicle registration plate.
[0004] The object as set above is solved, according to the present invention, by features according to the characterising clause of the claim 1. The invention is disclosed in detail in corresponding subclaims.
[0005] The invention is further described in detail by way of non-limiting embodiment, and with a reference to the accompanying drawings, where
Fig. 1 shows a partial side view of a motor vehicle with a lighting system for a registration plate according to the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a vehicle of Fig. 1 viewed from the back of the vehicle;
Fig. 3 shows a three-dimensional view of the lighting system according to the invention;
Fig. 4 shows a sectional view in a vertical plane of the lighting system of Fig. 3 ;
Fig. 5 shows a lighting system of Fig. 4 viewed in a sectional surface;
Fig. 6 shows another embodiment of the lighting system of Fig. 5.
[0006] A lighting system for a registration plate 1 of a motor vehicle 2 comprises at least one box shaped compartment 3 closed by an external lens 4. Typically, said compartment 3 is arranged in a section of the vehicle 2 and in the area above the registration plate 1 or, for example, in a handle for manipulating a boot lid and similar. Particularly preferred is an embodiment of the compartment 3 which extends essentially over the entire length of the registration plate 1. Obviously, the compartment 3 is oriented with respect to the vehicle 2 in a manner that said lens 4 at least partially faces the registration plate 1.
[0007] Furthermore, an electric and, respectively, an electronic circuit 6 carrying at least one light source, preferably two light sources and in particular a primary light source 7 for lighting the registration plate 1 of the vehicle 2 and a secondary light source 8, is arranged in said compartment 3 in the area between a wall 5 of the box shaped compartment which lies opposite to the external lens 4, and the external lens 4. Said secondary light source 8 is intended either to additional light the registration plate 1 and/or to additionally light the vehicle 2 surroundings such as the road surface for instance. Optical axes of the light source 7, 8 can be mutual parallel or tilted one to each other. As an example, the optical axis of the primary light source 7 is tilted and, respectively, directed toward the registration plate 1, whereas the optical axis of the secondary light source 8 is tilted and, respectively, directed away from the registration plate 1. At least one inner lens 9 is arranged inside said compartment 3 between the external lens 4 and the light source, in the immediate vicinity of at least one of the light sources 7, 8, said inner lens 9 collecting light from one of the light sources 7, 8 and redirecting said light to the respective area 10, 11 outside the lens 4.
[0008] Said external lens 4 comprises in at least one direction of the extension thereof, when viewed planarly, at least two areas 10, 11 each formed, when viewed in a cross-section (cf . Fig. 4), in the sense of a piecewise continuous function. The first area 10 of the external lens 4 is intended to collect light from the primary light source 7 and to redirect said light toward the registration plate 1. The second area 11 of the external lens 4 is intended to collect light from the secondary light source 8 and to redirect said light in direction away from the registration plate 1 and, optionally, toward the road surface. Said external lens 4 can be formed in one piece, as a single integral part having different optical characteristics, or it can be composed, in a manner known per se, from several parts each having different optical characteristics. The external lens
4 is composed, for instance, of the areas 10, 11 mutually connected by means of a chemical and/or physical bond.
[0009] Furthermore, it is provided according to the present invention that at least one of said areas 10, 11 of the external lens 4 or tah at least one of surfaces of at least one of the areas 10, 11 of the external lens 4 can be formed in a manner of a progressive lens and, respectively, a free-form lens, or as a matrix of micro-lenses or as a hologram or as a diffractive optics or as a prismatic optics or as a lens with integrated liquid crystals or as an arbitrary combination thereof. Moreover, it is provided that at least one of the areas 10, 11 of the external lens 4 is formed with or as an inclination. In the present embodiment, the inclination is formed in the second area 11 of the external lens 4, that is the area lying under the secondary light source 8. Said inclination extends for an angle with respect to the approximate horizontal and, respectively, the road surface, toward the secondary light source 8, said angle ranging between about 5° and about 60°.
[0010] The second embodiment of the lighting system according to the invention provides for a screen 12 arranged between said light sources 7, 8 which provides the light from whichever light source 7, 8 to light only the corresponding area 10, 11 of the external lens 4.
[0011] As already mentioned is the primary light source 7 intended to light the registration plate 1 of the vehicle 2. The light beam radiates from the primary light source 7 toward the first area 10 of the external lens 4 which in turn appropriately redirects the light beam toward the registration plate 1 of the vehicle 2. The secondary light source is intended to light the road surface in the close vicinity of the back of the vehicle 2 and/or to additionally light the registration plate 1. Primarily, the operation of the light sources 7, 8 is mutually independent and separated. The operation of the secondary light source 8 in particular is controlled either manually or by means of a known control unit inside the vehicle 2.
[0012] Aside from the lighting the road surface in the close vicinity of the back of the vehicle 2 and/or the additional lighting the registration plate 1 said secondary light source 8 also enables a plurality of additional functions. Among other things, said additional functions are represented as an additional lighting when reversing the vehicle 2, as a lighting with low speed manoeuvring, as an assistance lighting when reversing the vehicle using camera, projecting danger warning sign to the road surface, a welcome lighting, or any other arbitrary function not
in contrary to the regulations.
