Brief Description of the Drawing
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention. Detailed Description of a Preferred Embodiment
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of an open shoe 10 according to an embodiment of the invention.
The shoe comprises a sole or base member 12 and an upper 14. In this
embodiment the sole comprises insole member 16 and heel 18. The upper 14 comprises integral tongue portion 20 and side upper straps 22. Tongue portion 20 and upper side straps 22 may be formed of multiple components.
A first fastening member, in this embodiment post 24, extends upwards from the sole 12. The post 24 is located and angled so that in use it will extend between the user's hallux and second toe. The post 24 is preferably
permanently secured in the sole 12 but may be replaceable. The post has a threaded female recess 26 at its free end.
The upper 14 has an aperture 28 in the tongue portion. The aperture 28 is smaller than the end of post 24 and so post 24 cannot pass through aperture 28. A second fastening member, in this embodiment pin 30, is provided. The pin has a head 32 and threaded male shank 34. The head 32 is larger than aperture 28 whilst shank 34 is sized to pass through aperture 28 and screw into female recess 26 and thereby sandwich the upper 14 between the post 24 and the head 32 to secure the upper to the sole at that location.
The base 12 includes two lower side straps 40 that extend either side of the insole member 16, in this embodiment forward of the heel 18. This is not essential and the side straps 40 may extend from above the heel 18.
Each side strap 40 carries at least one first fastening member, in this embodiment two male stud members 42 that, in this embodiment extend outwards. There may be a single stud member 42 or more than two stud members 42. The upper side straps 22 each carry two complementary inwards facing female stud members 44 that are spaced to engage the male stud members 42. The female stud members 44 are preferably permanently connected to the upper side straps 22 and more preferably are secured within the side straps 22 and are not apparent from the outside surface 46. However, the female stud members 44 may have their head located on the outer surface 46 and so be visible. Further the female stud members 44 may be separate, replaceable components that pass through and sandwich the side straps 22 between
themselves and the lower side straps 40. This allows a user to change the visual appearance of the shoe by changing the female stud members independently of the upper 14 and sole 12.
The fasteners for the side straps need not be studs but may be screw threaded type fasteners or other types of fasteners, including but not limited to as hook and loop type fastener.
It will be apparent that by providing a plurality of uppers 14 and/or soles 12 a user may combine different uppers and lowers so as to change the visual and functional appearance of the show. For example, a first sole may be provided with a low heel whilst another sole may have a higher heel. The same upper may be connected to the different soles so that the visual appearance of the shoe is substantially the same whilst changing the amount of lift provided by the shoe. In a similar manner, different uppers can be connected to the same sole so as to change the visual appearance whilst leaving the lift unchanged. It will be appreciated that it is not critical that the upper be a generally open strap type upper and the upper may enclose more of the user's foot.
Fastening members may be provided along the sides of the shoe, in front of the user's toes or behind the user's heel.
In this embodiment the side straps 40 are permanently connected to the sole 16 but may be connected in a replaceable manner, such as by studs, screws or other fasteners. A single strap 40 may extend on only one side of the sole or on both sides.
Whilst the preferred embodiment has a single rear side strap 40 on either side of the sole 12 this is not essential and, if desired, there may be two straps extending either side of the sole.
Whilst the preferred embodiment has a post 24 extending upwards from the sole to sandwich and engage the upper 14 and pin 30, this is not essential. Other methods of fastening the upper 14 to the sole 12 may be used. As an example, the pin 30 may be a two part component that sandwiches the upper
and the threaded shank 34 may screw into a threaded female recess located in the sole 12.
Unless the context clearly requires otherwise, throughout the description and any claims the words "comprise", "comprising", and the like are to be construed in an inclusive sense as opposed to an exclusive or exhaustive sense; that is to say, in the sense of "including, but not limited to".
The features of the invention described or mentioned in this document may be combined in any combination of features where features are not mutually exclusive.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many obvious modifications and variations may be made to the embodiments described herein without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
