Definitions

  • This invention concerns a carrying assembly for attaching a tool to an agricultural machine. More specifically the invention concerns a mower carrying assembly for attachment to the front of an agricultural tractor.
  • a mower is typically attached to the front a tractor by a carrying assembly which is fitted to a three point hitch on a tractor.
  • the three point hitch can hold the mower at a desired height.
  • the carrying assembly may be provided with contact wheels to support some of the weight of the mower on the ground and to assist the mower in maintaining the same cutting height when moving over different contours of the ground.
  • the carrier assembly When the mower is not in use, it must be carried by the tractor in a transport position in which it is held in a raised position high above the ground.
  • the carrier assembly must be provided with adequate compensation or suspension means to prevent unnecessary movement of an attached mower when travelling in the transport position.
  • Compensation or suspension means are also required during mowing, when the mower is in a lowered position to enable the mower to move independently of the tractor and carrier assembly and allow the mower to follow uneven ground and thus mow grass evenly. Without adequate compensation, or suspension means, undesired movement of the assembly and mower (in a vertical and/or horizontal direction) will reduce the stability of the tractor which may become unsafe and dangerous to operate.
  • Known carrying assemblies for carrying a mower located at the front of a tractor comprise a carrier frame which is attachable to an agricultural machine. Two member are pivotally suspended from the carrier frame and are pivotally attached to a mower forming a four bar linkage. This permits limited vertical movement of the mower when travelling over uneven ground and with such simple four-bar kinematics, the space between the lowest and highest positions of the mowing position is often not large enough to compensate for uneven ground. As a result, when travelling over a depression in the ground, or downhill the assembly will not permit the mower to be lowered sufficiently for the mower to mow the grass.
  • the carrier assembly may not be able to move the mower sufficiently high enough, with the result that the mower and/or part of the assembly comes into contact with the ground causing damage to the mower and/or carrier assembly and/or tractor. This is especially true when the tractor is equipped with a suspended front axle.
