Definitions
- the invention relates to apparatus for locking and unlocking a closure, particularly to such apparatus for providing a securing and/or locking of a gate closure such as an agricultural or farm gate.
- Such agricultural gates are often of metal or wood, and are hinged at one end of a frame thereof to a gate post, being latched shut by a latch on an opposite side of the frame engaging with an adjacent gate post.
- Such latches are often locked with a separate padlock, but they are vulnerable to damage or vandalism as they can be attacked by for example bolt cutters. Livestock or equipment in a field can be stolen, leading to expensive losses and repair or replacement of the gate closure.
- apparatus adapted for locking and unlocking a closure, comprising a housing, a bolt reciprocable between respective locked and unlocked positions, a deadlock operative to engage and disengage the bolt in the respective positions, and a mechanism including a combination lock means , the arrangement being such that on operation of the mechanism the bolt can be moved between the respective locked and unlocked positions of the apparatus consequent on settings of the combination lock means .
- Fig.l is a schematic elevational view of the apparatus in the locked position with parts removed for clarity;
- Fig.2 is a schematic elevational view of the apparatus closed but in a condition to be in the unlocked position, with parts removed for clarity;
- Fig.3 is a schematic elevational view of the apparatus in the unlocked position, with parts removed for clarity;
- Figs.4A to 4C show respective schematic side elevational, plan, and front elevational views of the exterior of the apparatus;
- Fig.5 shows a schematic perspective view of apparatus embodying the invention mounted on a frame of a closure such as a farm gate, the interior of the apparatus being shown in phantom;
- Fig.6 shows a schematic exploded perspective view of an embodiment of device for mounting operative elements of the apparatus.
- apparatus 1 adapted for locking and unlocking a closure (not shown), comprising a housing 2, a bolt 3 reciprocable between respective locked (Fig.l) and unlocked ( Figs.2,3) positions, a deadbolt 4 operative to engage and disengage the bolt 3 in the respective positions, and a mechanism 5 including a combination lock means 6 for operating the deadbolt 4 , the arrangement being such that on operation of the mechanism 5 the bolt 3 can be moved between the respective locked and unlocked positions of the apparatus 1 consequent on settings of the combination lock means 6.
- the combination lock means 6 of the embodiment shown has a plurality of rotatable knobs or hand wheels 7, which have their rotary positions marked by indicia such as numerals 8 on their external surfaces, a datum 9 being provided on the housing 2 opposite which a combination setting numeral can be positioned on rotation of a respective knob 7, ie four knobs there are four datums on the housing, only one being shown for clarity.
- the knobs 7 extend into the housing 2 and grooves on the circumference of internal parts correspond with the numerals 8 on the external face or surface of each knob 7.
- biasing means 10 in the form of a flat spring, which spring has a nib 11 which locates in the uppermost groove, ie the groove facing upwardly as viewed in Fig.2.
- the knobs 7 each comprise within the housing 2 an inner and an outer splined part 7a,7b, the outer part 7b having a rebate or notch 12, which enables the notch 12 to be aligned with a desired numeral 8 to enable re-coding of the lock combination. This is achieved by sliding the outer part 7b off the spline and then
- knobs 7 are held in place in the housing by two bifurcated members 13, or forks, which cannot be removed once the apparatus 1 is mounted on a closure. This is because when the apparatus 1 is mounted on a frame 30 of the closure such as on the inward facing surface of an upright 31 of a farm gate such as five-barred gate, that upright 31 conceals the forks 13, so affording additional security against vandalism.
- the bolt 3 can be grasped via a mushroom -shaped grip 14 and pulled to the left as viewed in Fig.l so that it extends out of the housing 2, being thereby released from a keeper on a gate post opposite the gate, where the closure is a gate such as a farm gate (not shown), and providing the unlocked position.
- the combination lock means 6 is part of the mechanism 5 for operating the deadbolt 4 so that the bolt 3 can be moved as just described.
- This mechanism 5 includes a notch 15 on the bolt 3, which notch 15 has an inclined surface 16, the notch 15 being spaced longitudinally along the bolt 3 from a mortice 17 for the deadbolt 4, the bolt 3 being elongate and generally cylindrical in cross-section.
- the mechanism 5 also includes an elongate member in the form of a rod 18 one end 19 of which is received in the notch 15. As the bolt 3 moves to the left as viewed, the rod 18 is urged upwardly along the inclined surface 16 in a direction to leave the notch 15.
- the rod 18 is in turn connected with a lever or paddle 20 which is itself in contact with the underside, as viewed, of an elongate element 21 in the form of an armature which carries on its upper surface , as viewed, detents 22 or nibs which are releasably interengagable with, and are received in the complementary, in the
- shaped rebates or notches 12 which form recesses or seats in the outer part 7b of the knobs 7 when the rod 18 moves upwardly to raise the armature 21 to engage the detents 22 in the seats 12. This action accommodates upward movement of the armature 21 sufficiently to enable the lever 20 to raise the deadbolt 4 clear of the mortice 17 so that the apparatus 1 can be moved to the unlocked position, the bolt 3 being slidable freely to the unlocked position.
- the lever 20 is connected as by being pivoted thereto to the deadbolt 4, and at the opposite end 23 is connected as by pivot means to the underside of the armature 21, there being biasing means such as a coil spring 24 which receives the rod 18 and acts between a stop 25 and the underside of the lever 18 to provide a positive unlocking action, and to ensure a positive return to the locked position when the bolt 3 is pushed back into the housing 2.
- biasing means such as a coil spring 24 which receives the rod 18 and acts between a stop 25 and the underside of the lever 18 to provide a positive unlocking action, and to ensure a positive return to the locked position when the bolt 3 is pushed back into the housing 2.
- the armature 21 is held by an internal frame 26 which is supported by a roll pin 27.
- the rod 18 is urged upwardly but because one or more of the detents 22 and seats 22 are not in alignment, the armature 21 and lever 20 cannot move upwardly as there is no space, ( see Fig.l) and the spring 24 (or springs, there may be more than one when the lever is of U-shape) is or are compressed so as to urge the deadbolt 4 downwardly to remain in the mortice 17, so maintaining the locked position.
- the bolt 3 is relatively long as compared to the length of the housing, and has a long throw or distance of movement, so is able to bridge a gap of up to 50mm, typically 20-40mm, between the outer face of a frame of a closure on which it is mounted, such as a farm gate, and the adjacent facing or inner as viewed face of a facing gate post .
- the long throw bolt 3 has up to about 70mm of travel, which means that the apparatus 1 is effective as a lock even when the gap between the gate and post is up to about 50mm from the gate frame .
- a guide device 29 in the form of a member screw-engaged in the underside of the bolt 3, a head of the member extending laterally of, in engagement with and below spaced apart facing flanges of a bottom surface of the housing.
- the screw-threaded part of the device slides along a gap formed by the facing spaced-apart flanges on which the head bears to provide a smooth, positive siidable action of the bolt 3.
- FIG.6 shows an embodiment in which the forks 13 of Figs 1 to 4C for mounting the knobs 7 in the apparatus are replaced by a device 32 which in the embodiment is in the form of a central shaft 33 with a keyway 34,35 and a key 36 on each keyway which key is received in a complementary shaped seating in a central sleeve 37.
- the shaft 33 is long enough to enter with a push fit in complementary seatings in the inner and outer knobs 38,39, which on rotation turn the central sleeve 37 to a desired setting for locking or unlocking the combination lock means.
- the central sleeve 37 is (operative to alter the combination lock setting on rotation, for which purpose it carries a peripheral notch 40 for aligning with the datum 9.
- the apparatus is secured to the upright 31 of the frame 30 by securing means such as bolts screw- engaged in seatings 41, 42 after being inserted through aligned through holes (not shown) in the upright 31.
