Definitions
- the present invention relates to locking systems for windows, doors and the like, especially to locking systems for sliding windows.
- Sliding window manufacturers typically use locking devices on the sash meeting rails to provide environmental control and security and to prevent unintentional opening of their windows.
- Typical locking devices help provide forced-entry resistance as a means to prevent unintended opening of the window.
- Typical locking devices use various means to help prevent manipulation of the lock's cam and lever handle.
- Some examples include pick plates which extend under the bottom surface of the cam, shrouded keepers to help prevent access to the lock handle, stiff detents in the locked position, and locking "buttons” to help prevent the handle or cam from being rotated.
- the problem to be solved by the present invention is an optimal burglary protection so that doors / windows that move relative to each other (sliding windows) can be locked and secured easily. Also the present invention aims at providing a locking system optimized for disabled persons.
- the locking system of the present invention is designed so that it can be installed at the production site or may be retrofitted.
- the locking mechanism is mounted in a housing and involves an opposite mounted locking groove.
- a slidable handle or button can be moved sideways thereby moving the locking plate inside the lock casing.
- the present invention provides a novel locking mechanism with protection against unintended window or door opening.
- the device can include at least one lock assembly adapted for mounting on the interior side of the window's inner sash with provision for a locked and unlocked position actuated by a slidable handle and transmitting movement of the locking plate with the slidable handle.
- the lock assembly engages with at least one locking groove adapted for mounting in a window sash to secure the window in a closed and locked position.
- the lock assembly housing may have a barrier extending outward from the bottom surface which effectively helps to block access to the locking plate from the normally exposed condition when in the locked position.
- a lock assembly comprising:
- a housing having a front wall, a pair of side walls, a top wall, and a rear wall, the rear wall defining an opening;
- a locking plate rotatable between an unlocked position in which the locking plate is entirely received in the housing and a locked position in which a portion of the locking plate extends outward through the opening;
- a slidable handle operably coupled to the locking plate through an opening in the front wall of the housing to enable the locking plate to be rotated between the unlocked and the locked positions;
- the slidable handle is slidable along the front wall and extends into the housing for coupling with the locking plate, said locking plate is pivotally attached to the housing, and said locking plate is provided with a groove for receiving a part, such as a pin, of the slidable handle that extends into the housing, whereby sliding of the handle rotates the locking plate.
- the slidable handle extends into the housing through the top wall.
- the present invention provides a lock assembly comprising:
- a housing having a front wall, a pair of side walls, a top wall, and a rear wall, the rear wall defining an opening; a locking plate rotatable between an unlocked position in which the locking plate is entirely received in the housing and a locked position in which a portion of the locking plate extends outward through the opening;
- a slidable handle operably coupled to the locking plate through an opening in the top wall of the housing to enable the locking plate to be rotated between the unlocked and the locked positions;

- the groove has an essentially linear path with a bend in the end for ensuring a stable locking position of the locking plate, said groove adapted to accommodate the pin of the slidable handle. It is preferred that the locking plate is pivotally attached to the housing in the corner of the plate opposite to the slidable handle and closest to the front wall.
- the housing further comprises a means for detecting and alarming if the pin is unintentionally moved away from the locking position, such as by an intruding burglar.
- a means for detecting and alarming if the pin is unintentionally moved away from the locking position is an electrical circuit in which the pin is integrated or a button that is pressed by the pin when placed in the locking position.
- the housing and locking groove may further comprise apertures for receiving fasteners to fasten them to a support, such as a sash of a window.
- the housing and locking groove are preferably made from materials independently selected from plastic, iron, aluminum, brass, iron, iron alloys, and combinations thereof.
- the locking groove may be mounted on the interior side of the window's outer sash and is generally aligned with the lock assembly.
- the locking groove generally has a boss feature which interfaces with the locking plate as it is moved upon closure of the meeting window sashes and movement of the lock's slidable handle from the unlocked to the locked position.
- the locking system of the present invention can be adapted to work in a variety of window applications, and can be made of metal, polymer composite, or other suitable materials.
- the device can be used with vinyl, aluminum, wood, composite or other window materials.
- the slidable handle may be configured so that physically disabled persons can operate the locking mechanism.

- the slidable handle (9) operably coupled to the locking plate through an opening in the front wall of the housing to enable the locking plate (7) to be rotated between the unlocked and the locked positions.
- the slidable handle is slidable along the front wall and extends into the housing (1) for coupling with the locking plate (7), said locking plate (7) is pivotally attached to the housing (1), and said locking plate (7) is provided with a groove (10) for receiving a part (1 1), such as a pin, of the slidable handle that extends into the housing (1), whereby sliding of the handle rotates the locking plate (7).
- FIG. 3 and 4 there is shown a lock assembly of the second embodiment of the present invention.
