- mapping section 530 assigns transmission symbols in X polarization using bits B1 to B4 output from encoder 510, and assigns transmission symbols in Y polarization using bits B5 to B8.
- mapping section 530 assigns symbols such that 12QAM is obtained by removing the four corner points of 16QAM. As can be seen from the figure, 12QAM signal points are divided into 8 points with large amplitude and 4 points with small amplitude.
- the encoder 510 is configured such that the amplitude of the optical signal modulated by the optical modulator 140 is between two types of polarization (X polarization and Y polarization) of the optical carrier wave.
- the encoding is performed so as to have a correlation.
- the mapping unit 530 is configured to assign symbols to signal points having the maximum amplitude in at least one polarization.
- mapping unit 530 will be described in more detail using the constellation diagrams of 12QAM in the X polarization and the Y polarization shown in FIGS. 13A to 13D.
- FIGS. 13A to 13C there is the following correlation with respect to the amplitude between the X polarization symbol and the Y polarization symbol. That is, in the case shown in FIG. 13A, both X-polarized wave and Y-polarized wave have symbol points with large amplitudes. 13B, the X-polarized wave has a symbol point with a small amplitude, and the Y-polarized wave has a symbol point with a large amplitude.
- FIG. 13A both X-polarized wave and Y-polarized wave have symbol points with large amplitudes.
- the X-polarized wave has a symbol point with a small amplitude
- the Y-polarized wave has a symbol point with a large amplitude.
- FIG. 13A both X-polarized wave and Y-
- the X-polarized wave has a symbol point with a large amplitude
- the Y-polarized wave has a symbol point with a small amplitude.
- the mapping unit 530 assigns symbols to signal points having the maximum amplitude in at least one polarization, that is, the configuration excluding the symbol arrangement shown in FIG. 13D, thereby reducing the number of adjacent points. Can be reduced. Thereby, the bit error rate can be reduced.
- the second encoder 512 since the second encoder 512 generates parity bits, the four-dimensional set division is performed, and the symbol points are decimated in half. Therefore, the second encoder 512 and the mapping unit 530 generate There are 64 symbol points. This is equivalent to the conventional PM-8QAM.
- the transmission power per one polarization of the transmission symbol is Es
- Es is the average of the square of the amplitude for all symbols
- 16QAM the distance between signal points is 0.63 Es 1/2. 2 .
- 12QAM the distance between signal points is expanded to 0.71 Es 1/2 . This is an effect obtained by removing symbols at four corners of 16QAM symbol points.
- the distance between the four-dimensional signal points of 12QAM becomes 1.0 Es 1/2 that is 2 1/2 times, and the signal in the conventional PM-8QAM The distance between the points becomes larger than 0.92 Es 1/2 . Therefore, by using 12QAM, performance equal to or better than PM-8QAM can be obtained.
- the configuration in which the amplitude is correlated between the polarizations is applicable to any symbol arrangement as well as other QAM signals.
- the present invention can also be applied to a configuration excluding the case of having a symbol point having a large amplitude in both the X polarization and the Y polarization shown in FIG. 13A.
- a digital signal to be transmitted under a predetermined transmission condition by an optical carrier wave is selected by selecting a predetermined encoding method corresponding to the predetermined transmission condition.
- the symbol signal is generated by associating the encoded bit signal with the modulation symbol.
- an optical modulation signal is generated by modulating the optical carrier based on this symbol signal.
- the optical transmitter 500 and the optical communication method according to the present embodiment are configured to select and encode a predetermined encoding method corresponding to a predetermined transmission condition.
- a predetermined encoding method corresponding to a predetermined transmission condition.
- the base symbol arrangement does not change, so that it is possible to minimize changes in digital signal processing.
- the modulation scheme used in the optical communication system can be switched according to transmission conditions, it is possible to reduce power consumption and facilitate control.
- the effect of reducing the bit error rate and extending the transmission distance can be obtained.
- the physical interface such as an optical modulator can be shared in each encoding method, the number of parts can be reduced. This also makes it possible to reduce costs and facilitate control.
