  • a method for providing a door lifting assembly including the steps of providing a plurality of supports to retain a plurality of panels therebetween, connecting a plurality of spaced-apart drums to the plurality of supports, the spaced-apart drums configured to coil and uncoil the plurality of panels and providing a plurality of spaced-apart motors to move the plurality of panels to coil and uncoil the plurality of panels.
  • the method may include synchronizing the motors.
  • the synchronizing may synchronize by a shaft mechanism or an electrical mechanism.
  • the method ma further include providing a drive gear to connect the shaft mechanism and the electric motor.

  • the motors 120a, 120b may be electric driven gear motors. In some applications, the motors 120a, 120b may be coupled/linked to a shaft 145 through a gear 150a, 150b, or a chain and sprocket.
  • the motors 120a, 120b may be configured to be positioned at opposite ends of the shaft 145.
  • the motors 120a, 120b may be positioned at opposite ends of the door 110.
  • the plurality of rigid panels 115a-15(n) may be configured to be opaque, translucent or transparent or a combination.
  • the plurality of rigid panels 115a-15(n) may be sized to have any suitable length and height.
  • the height of the plurality of rigid panels 115a-15(n) may be selected from the range of about 6" to about 8", thereby making coiling more achievable, as describe more fully below.
  • the door lifting assembly 100 includes a plurality of rigid door panels 115a-15(n), a shaft 145, drums 121a, 121b, and two motors 120a, 120b for rotating the drums 121a, 121b and winding/unwinding the door panel(s) 120a, 120b around the drums 121a, 121b.
  • the motors 120a, 120b may be coupled to a shaft 145 linkage through torque transmission means, such as, e.g., a direct drive, a chain and sprocket, gears 150a, 150b, and so on.
  • Opposite ends of the panels 115a-115(n) may be configured to travel along the supports 125a, 125b while the door 110 is being opened or closed.
  • the supports 125 a, 125b may also be configured to permit the panels 115a-115(n) to slideably engage with the drums 121a, 121b so that the panels 115a-l 15(n) may be coiled (or uncoiled) in a circular fashion while being supported and held in a coiled orientation by the drums 121a, 121b.
  • the supports 125a, 125b may be vertical supports as shown, or may be horizontal, and may be configured to retain the plurality of panels 120a, 120b therebetween.
  • the supports 125a, 125b (as well as the drums 121a, 121b) may be configured with a channel that permits the panels 115a-l 15(n) to be engaged therein such as by retaining mechanisms such as, e.g., rollers.
  • the motors 120a, 120b may be driven by a common frequency drive.
  • the motors 120a, 120b may be operated by means of a control panel 142 (e.g., a contractor control panel).
  • the common shaft 145 may be rigid and sized appropriately to allow for linking and synchronizing rotation of at least two motors 120a, 120b with respect to one another. This allows for the simplified timing of at least two separate drives. This permits the door 110 to travel evenly along the supports 125a, 125b without causing binding. In addition, having multiple drives provides redundancy to the door lifting assembly, thereby increasing safety against catastrophic failure that can lead to the free-fall of the door 110.
  • the motors 120a, 120b may be sized such that each motor may individually hold the door 110 by means of an integrated holding brake (not shown).
  • the motors 120a, 120b, drums 121a, 121b and shaft 145 may be held in position by a structural cage 105 that may comprise one or more horizontal elements 130a, 130b, and one or more vertical elements 135a, 135b, 135c whereby the horizontal elements 130a, 130b are connected to the vertical elements 135a, 135b, 135c to provide a structural integrity to the cage 105 for mounting the motors 120a, 120b, drums 121a, 121b and shaft 145 to a building structure.
  • the cage 105 may be enclosed 137 at one or both ends.
  • the door lifting assembly 100 may include a sensor (not shown) that may be used to detect the angular position of at least one of the motors 120a, 120b.
  • the door lifting assembly 100 may include a current sensor that may be used to measure the current drawn by each motor 120a, 120b. Moreover, the door lifting assembly 100 may include more than two motors. The motors 120a, 120b may be connected 140 to an electrical source.
  • Each motor 120a, 120b may include a commonly sized gear, which may be operably connected to a corresponding shaft by a drive member to raise and lower the door panel(s) 115.
  • Each motor 120a, 120b and the shaft may be arranged so as to increase the reverse (or forward) torque and prevent the door 110 from unwinding when the door 110 is suspended in a partially or substantially opened position.
  • the door lifting assembly 100 may include a means for manually operating the motors and/or rotating the shaft 145 to move the door 110 vertically (or horizontally).
  • a door lifting assembly may be assembled in a way that a door may move in an opening (and/or closing) direction that may include, e.g., horizontal, vertical, diagonally, and the like.

  • a benefit of having multiple motors 120a, 120b is that they provide redundancy and enable synchronous rotation with respect to one another, which allows for simplified timing. Furthermore, multiple drives provide a redundancy to the door lifting assembly 100 which increases safety against a potential free-fall of the door 110, should one of the drive mechanisms fail.
  • the motors 120a, 120b may be synchronized using a mechanism employing electrical signals, without need for a mechanism such as a shaft 145 to mechanically synchronize the motors 120a, 120b.
  • the door lifting assembly 100 allows for the possible elimination of the counter balance system while avoiding the need for addition of a costly drive system. Smaller drives offer a significant savings over larger drives. Additionally, the load balancing of the drives helps to dissipate the regeneration energy and therefore keep heat buildup down.
