Description

A PALM-BASED ANIMAL FEED
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a palm-based animal feed composition. In more particular, the present invention relates to an animal feed composition in which a large proportion of oil palm-based or other plant-derived organic materials are employed. The animal feed provided is innovatively formulated for a wide variety of animals, especially ruminants, fish and poultry.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION There have been numerous formulations of animal feeds, which are produced from agricultural wastes, being introduced to the livestock feeding industry. One of the major types of agricultural wastes which is being actively recycled and utilized in recent years is from the oil palm industry. Every year, the oil palm industry in tropical countries produces tones of lignocellulosic biomass that comprises empty fruit bunches (EFB), oil palm fronds (OPF), oil palm trunk (OPT) and others. Some of these biomass or wastes have been innovatively utilized in the manufacture of various useful commercial products. As the raw condition of OPT is found to be inferior to reinforcement, it is deemed more difficult and costly to process the OPT into commercial products, especially wood products. Hence, the application of OPT in the industry is still considered limited. The recycle or conversion of oil palm wastes, especially OPT, into animal feed, is therefore of one of the latest interests of the researchers to further explore the use of these agricultural wastes.
There are a few patented technologies in the prior art relating to animal feeds made of oil palm-derived materials. Japanese Patent No. JP2002051707 discloses a crude feed for herbivorous animals, in which fronds consisting of both the leaves and stems of oil palm are employed. These fronds are ground into frond fibres and to be fed to the herbivorous animals. However, there is no specific formulation of any oil palm-based animal feed disclosed in this patent document. Besides, OPT is also not utilized in this crude feed production.
A U.K Patent No. GB2200027 also discloses an animal feed which comprises OPF that have been compressed into a compact form. Similarly, there is also no specific formulation of any oil palm-based animal feed composition disclosed, except for the brief description of the supplementation of nutritional additives such as calcium and iron in to the animal feed. In addition, the use of OPT in the production of animal feed is also not disclosed.
Another Japanese Patent No. JP5168417 discloses the use of tropical palm as animal feed, in which the fibres from the trunk of oil palm is crushed with wood chipper, purified and dried. Nevertheless, the incorporation of plant or oil palm-based protein and fat source into the OPT-based animal feed composition is not provided in this disclosure. Apart from that, the suitable part of OPT which shall be utilized in the animal feed production is also not addressed. It is to be highlighted that, not all parts of an OPT are appropriate to be utilized in the production of animal feed composition, for instance, the lignified bark of OPT is structurally hard and difficult to be digested by most of the livestock animals. Therefore, inappropriate or indiscriminative use of the OPT as a major component in an animal feed may greatly affect or destroy the animal's digestive systems.
Accordingly, it is desirable for the present invention to provide an OPT-based animal feed composition which is nutritious yet safe to be consumed by the livestock animals. SUMMARY OF INVENTION

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a palm-based animal feed composition. In more particular, the present invention relates to an animal feed composition in which a large proportion of oil palm-based or other plant-derived organic materials are employed. The animal feed provided is innovatively formulated for a wide variety of animals, especially ruminants, fish and poultry. Hereinafter, the invention shall be described according to the preferred embodiments of the present invention and by referring to the accompanying description and drawings. However, it is to be understood that limiting the description to the preferred embodiments of the invention and to the drawings is merely to facilitate discussion of the present invention and it is envisioned that those skilled in the art may devise various modifications without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
The present invention discloses an animal feed composition comprising ground fibres derived from delignified core of OPT, which is mixed with a plant-based proteinaceous material and an oil palm-derived fat. In accordance with one of the preferred embodiments of the present invention, the OPT employed in the present invention can be commercially obtained from the oil palm industry. In order to meet the nutrient requirements as well as the functionality of the digestive systems of livestock animals, the animal feed composition of the present invention is mainly made of delignified core of OPT, in which the bark, lignin, together with the harder outer layers of the OPT have been removed.
As shown in Figure 1, an OPT peeling process is involved in the process of producing the animal feed composition. According to one of the preferred embodiments of the present invention, the delignified core of OPT applied is the core part of an OPT in which 15% to 50% of its outer part is removed therefrom. Generally, when approximately 15% to 30% of the outer part of the OPT is removed, the remaining core part of OPT is considered suitable to be used as the fibre source of the animal feed composition. In accordance with a more preferred embodiment of the present invention, approximately 50% of the outer part of the OPT is to be removed therefrom, therefore, the fibres obtained from the OPT core can be easily digested by the animals.
As illustrated in Figure 1, after the peeling step, the core part of OPT (which is also known as COPT) can be subjected to a chopping process, in order to produce the COPT chunks. Subsequently, the COPT chunks can be further ground into fibre granules, before they are being mixed with the selected protein and fat source to form the animal feed composition, which is in a moist form. Preferably, the delignified core of OPT is present in an amount of 10% to 80% by weight of the composition. The proportion of COPT may vary when the animal feed composition is formulated for different types of animals. Examples of the different feed formulations are further detailed in Examples 1 to 3. In accordance with another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the protein source applied in the animal feed composition is a plant-based proteinaceous material, which is preferably derived from dried oil palm fronds (OPF), Napier grass (which is also known as Pennisetum purpureum), kenaf leaves (also known as Hibiscus cannabinus) or a combination of any two or more thereof. Preferably, the plant-based proteinaceous material is present in an amount of 10% to 50% by weight of the composition. Most of these plant-based proteinaceous materials are also capable of providing additional fibre content to the animal feed composition.
Apart from the plant-based protein source, the fat source employed in the present invention is also natural or plant-based, particularly, oil palm-based. According to still another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the oil palm-based or oil palm-derived fat, is PKC or palm sludge oil. Both of these materials can be commercially obtained from the oil palm industry. Preferably, the oil palm-derived fat is present in an amount of 5% to 15% by weight of the composition.
In accordance with yet another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the animal feed composition can be further fortified with a supplement of vitamins, minerals or additives. According to the preferred embodiment, the supplement of vitamins, minerals or additives includes dicalcium phosphate, lime, sodium chloride, spirulina or a combination of two or more thereof. Besides making up any deficiency in the nutrient supply, these vitamins, minerals or additives also serve as flavoring agent for the animal composition to improve the palatability for the animals. Preferably, the supplement is present in an amount of 1% to 3% by weight of the composition.
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, the animal feed composition in its moist form, can be further processed by vacuum packing to form the finished product of moist feed mix. Alternatively, it can be pelletized and dried to form the finished product of dry feed mix, as shown in Figure 1. There is no preservative added to the animal feed composition of the present invention. The vacuum packed moist feed mix can have a shelf life of approximately 6 months to 1 year; whereas the pelletized dry feed mix can have a shelf life of approximately 1 to 2 years. As set forth in the foregoing description, the animal feed composition of the present invention can be formulated for a wide variety of livestock animals, particularly, ruminants, fish or poultry. As tabulated in Examples 1 to 3 are the exemplary feed formulations respectively prepared for ruminants, fish and poultry. The present disclosure includes as contained in the appended claims, as well as that of the foregoing description. Although this invention has been described in its preferred form with a degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention.
