Definitions
- the subject matter disclosed herein relates generally to the field of seats and personal space design, both within and without passenger transportation vehicles, and specifically to the inferiors of such vehicles, and even more specifically to passenger seats that may be employed particularly in vehicle interior's environment, airport lounges or healthcare environment. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to those environments.
- a travelling seat or a seat designed for prolonged usage, that such seat comprises a seat pan, a seat back, and a pair of armrests positioned laterally with respect to the seat pan.
- the seat back is mounted to the seat pan for pivotal movements between an upright position (wherein the seat back extends vertically upwardly relative to the seat pan) and a reclined position (wherein the seat back extends substantially horizontally relative to the seat pan).
- the seat back In order ⁇ o provide a comfortable sitting, the seat back must provide a number of ergonomic properties. This includes appropriate support for the back of the person to be seated at various parts of his back in longitudinal direction but also appropriate support for the shoulders and arms, which involves taking into account parameters such as the width and the shape of the seat back.
- armrest are necessary is advantageously exploited by using the armrest to include a foldable fable, entertainment controls, etc., this usually implies the seat portion to be narrower or the seat as a whole to be wider.
- the appropriate support for the back in a sitting position may not be the same as a comfortable support for the person's back in a horizontal bedding position.
- the support of the seat back since the seat back is also to be used in the horizontal bedding position, the support of the seat back must also be adapted and optimized for sleeping. For this reason it is necessary to make compromises in the type of support that a seat back will provide which results in a non-optimal solution for upright sitting or a non-optimal solution as a horizontal bed.
- An example is the use of single seats that do recline into a flat position, sometimes less than the optimal 180 degree flat position.
- the seat may be adequate in width as a seat, it is typically inadequate in width and/or length as a bed for the average size person. If the seat is adequately contoured as a seat, it is often inappropriate to use this contouring as a bed, resulting in an economically poor bed.
- the seat in the horizontal position may be adequate as a bed, it is typically inadequate as seat, it being too wide, too soft and/or not sufficiently contoured to offer acceptable support and comfort. This is typically the solution offered in corporate or executive aircraft, and also for airline travel in transport category aircraft.
- Another example is a combination of two reclinable single seats to be transformed into a bed.
- a sofa also called a 'divan'
- the divan can be extended in width, to provide adequate space to be used as a bed.
- the prior art single seats typically use fixed foam cushions for the seat pan and for the seat back.
- the leg rests are typically lightly cushioned with fixed foam, which results that the cushion hardness/softness is more or less uniform from the seat back to the leg rests.
- Many seats including passenger seats, have an extendable footrest or leg rest installed thereon for the comfort of the person to be seated.
- the footrest is actuated by a controller located on the seat armrest or by the reclining mechanism of the seat. When actuated, the footrest extends from its stowed, retracted position to the extended in use position and vice versa.
- Those leg rests generate pressure point on lower members, i.e. the calf, the foot sole, etc. generating discomfort for the person to be seated as well as potential blood circulation disorder when a person is to be seated for long periods of time.
- An armrest i.e. for a passenger transportation seat, is typically designed as a rectangular volume, positioned sideways and upright, with an upper surface typically parallel to the seat pan, upon which to place an arm.
- the armrest may incorporate a pocket, with an optional lid, and/or it may incorporate a foldaway table, which fits vertically into the armrest.
- the armrest may have a small horizontal surface that can be deployed from within the armrest, typically to place a beverage holder such as a small glass or similar.
- An armrest may include a variety of cup holders or container holders utilized for supporting cups, cans or other beverage containers, which are selectively accessible to the person to be seated. Many of these container holders have been stored in armrest assemblies. A full lid or cover on the armrest is raised and a cup holder mechanism is removed from inside of the armrest and secured outwardly of the armrest. The lid of the armrest may be closed with the cup holder extending from the armrest.
- the problem with these types of holders is the difficulty of accessing the holder, i.e., the user must manoeuvre several components to properly position the cup holder to receive a cup or container. Another example of a cup holder slides out from within the armrest and from the front face thereof.
- ancillary equipment such as entertainment systems, table surface, storage places, etc.
- the entertainment system or the table are built in the seat structure.
- the entertainment system or the table can also be put away outside of the seat structure ⁇ o allow greater variety of designs.
- the storage place is usually provided overhead or included inside of the shell space in front of the seat. Both solutions can easily give a feeling of confinement to the seated person.
- the present invention addresses the disadvantages of multi-function seats from prior art by providing a solution in which the support provided by the seat is on one hand optimal for upright sifting but on the other hand also optimal for horizontal bedding. Furthermore, the invention provides various embodiments that allow the improvement of the sitting or sleeping experience, like various intermediate positions between a fully upright and a horizontal bedding position, a shell to provide for a sense of privacy while keeping the flexibility of physical communication, etc. An optimized intermediate position is called the relax position for future reference herein.

- a multi-function seat 100 as illustrated in figures 1 to 33 has a control mechanism that adjusts, angle of the seat back and leg rest, cushion shape and stiffness, customizable to unique curves and contours of the person to be seated, and is composed of a seat back 110, a headrest 116 with an optional vent 115, a seat pan 120, an optional leg rest 130 and up to two armrests 140.
- the multi-function seat 100 further comprises two pivoting means (not illustrated) allowing pivotal movements between the seat back 110 and the seat pan 120 and between the seat pan 120 and the leg rest 130.
- the headrest ⁇ 6 can be adjustable both in height and incline.
- the multi-function seat 100 can optionally be integrated in a shell 200 to provide the use with a sense of privacy as represented in figures 21 to 33.
- Figures 1 to 3 show perspective views of a sitting arrangement in one embodiment of the invention, in different positions, i.e., upright, relax and horizontal bedding positions with a U-shaped filler cushion, thereby extending the width and length of the seat back 114.
- Figures 4 and 5 show perspective views of a sitting arrangement in another embodiment of the invention, in the relax and the horizontal bedding positions with two filler cushions 114 on each lateral side or the seat back thereby extending the width of the seat back 110.
- the seat back 110 In order to have an optimized seat for the upright position (figures 1 , 6, 8, 20, 24, 27 and 30) and the relax position (figures 2, 4, 10, 11 , 18, 19, 27, 22, 25, 28 and 31 ) the seat back 110 has to distribute the back and spinal pressure evenly, thus avoiding pressure spots as well as temperature hot spot on the back. Therefore the seat back 110 can be fitted with a mesh membrane 112, illustrated on figure 2, inducing natural ventilation.
- the mesh membrane 112 which is mounted to a frame (not illustrated) in tension, and has a limited degree of elasticity, provides for an even support over a larger area of the back than is normally possible using standard foam cushions. This results in the avoidance of pressure points and hot spots on the back.
- the seat back 110 is represented with an ergonomically contoured side support cushion 111.
- the shape and stiffness of some or all of the cushions is advantageously regulated by a Pneumatic and/or Hydraulic Control System (not illustrated) which allows a person to independently adapt the contour and the stiffness of the each individual cushion or group of cushions, such as, among others: the lumbar position 113, which can be located behind the seat mesh membrane 112, the contoured side support cushion 111 , the headrest cushion 116, etc.
- the same principle can be applied to the seat pan 120, where the cushions are also an integral part of the Pneumatic and/or Hydraulic Control System thus allowing a highly contoured, economically optimized sitting surface for the person through the control of the Pneumatic Control System.
- the seat pan 120 when the multi-function seat 100 is deployed into the relax position; while the seat back is inclined, the seat pan 120 is pivoted with a sufficient tilt angle so that the front of the seat pan is raised.
- a leg rest 130 advantageously completes the multi-function seat 100.
- the highly contoured seat is economically optimized for the upright and for the intermediate relax position while an evenly flat surface is obtained in the horizontal bedding position in which the hardness can be selected and controlled.
- a part of the seat pan 120 can also be fitted with a mesh membrane (not illustrated) on the sitting surface so that pressures and temperature hot spots are avoided and cooling ventilation is provided.
- additional support is provided to the seated person, figure 40.
- the additional support can be customized to the seated person's needs, i.e. for the lumbar support 113 or for the bed configuration.
- An armrest 140 can be provided in different configurations as well known by the person skilled in the art, it can be fixed or be a conventional retractable armrest.
- the armrest 140 can be structured to move between an extended position for supporting the seated person's arms and a retracted position whereby the armrest 140 is retracted downwardly into a retracted position alongside the seat pan 120.
- the ideal shape of a bed is universally accepted as rectangular shape, while an economically optimized seat pan 120 and seat back 110 do not result in a rectangle, when both are placed horizontally behind/adjacent to each other.
- this is exactly how conventional seat designs are made. They are essentially a rectangular mattress that is bent upright into a seat. Hence all passenger seats, that have a lie-flat capability, all look alike, mostly heavy, clumsy and not exactly elegant.
- the outline of the multi-function seat 100 is economically optimized as a seat, both in shape and contouring as represented in figures 3, 5, 7, 12, 13 and 14.
- a flat surface is needed instead of contoured one.
- the transition from the contoured surface (i.e. upright and relax position) to a flat surface is achieved through the Pneumatic and/or Hydraulic Control System.
- At least one filler cushion 114 is positioned beside or around the seat back 110, this only comes into play during the seat back 110 transition into the horizontal bedding position.
- the firmness of the filler cushion(s) 114 is controlled by the Pneumatic and/or Hydraulic Control System.
- Various techniques may be used to position the filler cushion(s) 114 next to the seat back 110. These include but are not limited to the following techniques: filler cushion(s) 114 are pre-mounted horizontally, seat back 110 translates next to them,
- filler cushion(s) 114 rise mechanically to meet the seat back 110 af a predetermined angle, and then descend in unison with the seat back 110 into the horizontal bedding position,
- the filler cushion(s) 114 can also wrap around the seat back 110, thus enveloping the seat back 110 by the lateral sides and the head side of the seat back 110.
- the filler cushions can be replaced by a pneumatic and/or Hydraulic cushion ideally included in the shell 200 structure.
- the filler cushion is defined by a plurality of independent cushion sections.
- an additional support surface 170 is provided in order to increase the bed length when the multi-function seat 100 is in the bedding position.
- the deployment mechanism for securing the additional support surface 170 in a first substantially vertical stowed position to a second substantially horizontal position is well known from a person skilled in the art.
- An articulated leg rest 130 is connected to the seat pan 120 with an actuation mechanism allowing the leg rest 130 to move outwardly or forwardly.
- the leg rest 130 will rotate upward and extend in length relative to its actuations mechanism to further extend the leg rest 130 relative to the chair seat in order to provide support for the lower legs in order to maintain a proper posture of the seated person such avoiding discomfort.
- the leg rest 130 folds downwardly into the chair base so that when the chair is the upright position the leg rest 130 appears to be a part of the base. In the relax position, the leg rest 130 advantageously remains automatically in the selected position.
- the leg rest 130 cushions are perfectly contoured to support the whole leg, in a very comfortable position.
- the shape and stiffness of the cushions is controlled by the Pneumatic and/or Hydraulic Control System.
- the optimised curve implies that there are no pressure points on the knees or on the calves.
- a foot resting surface 133 and a heel support 134 are shaped to accommodate the soles of the seated person's feet, whereby the articulated leg rest 130 includes distance adjusting means arranged to adjust a distance separating the foot resting surface 133 from the seat pan 120. The distance can be adjusted to be less than a length of person's calves such to provide a relief of pressure points on person's calves and thighs.
- the leg rest 130 advantageously comprises a calf support 131 formed of a central calf support member 1311 and two side calf support members 1312 on each lateral side of the central calf support member 1311.
- the articulated leg rest 130 is fitted with second pivoting means that enables for pivotal movements relative to the seat pan 120 on a side distant to the seat back 110 so as to be positioned in any position between a stowed configuration generally vertically disposed below the forward end of the seat pan 120 and a deployed position inclined above the stowed configuration.
- the articulated leg rest is mounted with third pivoting means.
- the third pivoting means enable for pivotal movements of the two side calf support members 1312 relative to the seat pan 120 and to the central calf support member 1311.
- the side calf support members 1312 can be positioned in any position between a first position, wherein the supporting surface of the central calf support member 1311 and the supporting surface of the two side calf support members 1312 are substantially in the same plane, and a second position, wherein a first angle between the sitting plane and the supporting surface of the side calf support member 1312 is greater than a second angle that is defined by the sitting plane and the supporting surface of the central calf support member 1311.
- This configuration option allows the unimpeded placement of the soles of a passenger's foot on the full surface available of the foot resting surface 133 and the heel support 134. Furthermore, by placing the feet on the foot resting surface 133 and the heel support 134, the physical load path is along the skeletal bone structure and not on the calves. This results in a big improvement of comfort in a RELAX position when using the leg rests.
- the leg rest 130 also includes an ankle support 132, which is connected to the central calf support member 1311 and travels with the calf support 131 between the deployed and the stowed configurations.
- the ankle support 132 is telescopically extendable form the calf support 131.
- a foot resting surface 133 is connected to the ankle support 132, opposite to the calf support 131, wherein the foot resting surface 133 extends on both sides of the calf support 131 and a fourth pivoting means mounts the foot resting surface 133 to the ankle support 132.
- the foot resting surface 133 is pivotally mounted onto the ankle support 132 and can be positioned either in a folded configuration, wherein the support surface of the foot resting surface 133 is substantially in the same plane as the support surface of the calf support 131, or an unfolded position, wherein the support surface of the foot resting surface 133 is for example substantially in a perpendicular plane to the support surface of the calf support 131 plane.
- An angle between the support surface of the foot resting surface 133 and the ankle support 132 may differ from the perpendicular as needed without any particular difficulty of realisation for the person skilled in the art.
- Additional heel supports 134 are connected either to the foot resting surface 133 or to the ankle support 132 in such a manner that heel supports are positioned each lateral side of the ankle support 132; with fifth pivoting means that mount the heel supports 134 either to the foot resting surface 133 or to the ankle support 132 and enable for pivotal movements relative either to the foot resting surface 133 or to the ankle support 132.
- the fifth pivoting means allows the heel supports 134 to be positioned either in a withholded position, wherein the support surface of the heel supports 134 is substantially in the same plane as the support surface of the ankle support 132, or a deployed position, wherein the support surface of the heel supports 134 is substantially in the same plane as the support surface of foot resting surface 133.
- the adaptable side calf support members 1312 combined with the foot resting surface 133 and the heel supports 134 is perfectly adapted to the lower member anatomy.
- the fact that the totality of the foot sole is supported gives to the seated person a better support and comfort sensation. This combination is particularly advantageous to prevent venous disorders, well known to long distance travellers.
- the above described leg rest has an additional rotation means such that the ankle support 132 can be folded so that when the multi-function seat 100 is in the horizontal bedding position the calf support 131 and the buddy seat 300 are directly connected thus enlarging the lying surface and allowing a better control of the bedding surface.
- the armrest 140 has a curved upper surface and is secured on a support stand 1402.
- the curved upper surface is shaped in such a manner that an angle between a lower arm and an upper arm of a person to be seated and having its lower arm resting on the curved surface, remains substantially constant and that a second angle between the lower arm and the upper surface measured at a contact area between the lower arm and the curved upper surface remains substantially constant regardless of the deployment position of the multi-function seat 100, i.e. upright or relax positions.
- the armrest 140 is economically optimised relative to the seat pan 120 and seat back 110's inclination angle.
- an armrest table 141 can be included in the armrest 140 structure in such a manner that the armrest table 141 is fully integrated in the armrest structure and is disposed under the curved surface of the armrest 140 so that the armrest table 141 can be used by a person to be seated in an seat adjacent to the armrest 140 regardless of the position of the seated person.
- the open conception of the armrest 140 and armrest table 141 is thus that the armrest table 141 can be accessed from both lateral sides of the armrest 140.
- the armrest table 141 is positioned in the forward part of the armrest 140, opposite to the seat back 110.
- the front end of the arm support 1401 includes a recess that is optimised as a cup/container holder 142, wherein the bottom of the cup/container is defined by armrest table 141, thus the cup/container can be easily reached by a person ⁇ o be seated on the multifunction seat 100 adjacent to the arm rest 140 regardless of the pivotal movements of the multifunction seat 100.
- the armrest 140 includes a first controller holder 143 and eventually a second controller holder 144.
- the first and the second controller holders 143 and 144 consist in a concave niche that is positioned in such a manner that a controller 180 can be housed in the arm rest and that the commands of the controller can be directly reached by the person to be seated on the multifunction seat 100 adjacent to the arm rest 140 regardless of the pivotal movements of the multifunction seat 100, i.e. upright, relax or bedding positions.
- the buddy seat 300 is typically designed to offer a guest a limited sitting opportunity while also doubling as an extension area for the feet, when the main seat is in the horizontal bedding position.
- the space underneath the buddy seat 300 can advantageously be used for the placing of hand luggage.
- the buddy seat 300 is advantageously fitted with a central portion of the buddy sitting surface 320 that can rotate horizontally left and right, either in a number of degrees (i.e. 30- 45 deg or up to 360 degree) and can be spring loaded to a central or zero position, thus allowing a seated guest to easily change orientation without lifting his/her body from the buddy seat 300.
- the central portion of the buddy sitting surface 320 and the surrounding buddy sitting surface 330 are controlled by the Pneumatic Control and/or Hydraulic System.
- the seat is enclosed with an open design concept, whereby the demarcation is not by a solid structure (wall, divider, etc.) but by a louvre/blade design 220 (or any other design that allows for partial visual penetration), which allows air and visual penetration from certain angles.
- a louvre/blade design 220 or any other design that allows for partial visual penetration
- This allows achieving the required psychological sense of privacy, however without a solid structure around the seat, or around the demarcated private space.
- the louvre/blade design 220 allows higher design flexibility as well as achieving a visually lighter, less encumbering interior design of the space.
- the same treatment is utilized for the buddy seat 300. This way, a clearly demarcated area and space is created which surrounds the multi-function seat 100 with its buddy seat 300 and defines clearly an entry/exit.
- the direction, orientation and materials selected for the louvres/blades 220 are client specific and is described later in the text.
- a supporting structure determines the shape of the shell 200.
- the supporting structure is advantageously made in one or a plurality of delimiting frames 210.
- the delimiting frame 210 can support aperture wall, claustra, blade/louvre structure, electro chromic panels or any other adapted material so that the dual functions of both privacy protection and light transmission can be realized.
- the blade/louvre elements can be mechanically pivoted to vary the degree of opening between each individual element. The application of the pivotable movement can be either through a direct mechanical or pneumatic means or electronic / electrical means, or any other means.
- a plurality of frames determines the shape of the shell 200 and where each frame can be spaced apart from each other.
- a retractable table 150 can be fixed in the shell.
- an inflight entertainment system 160 can be integrated in the shell structure, ideally behind the buddy seat as represented in figures 25 to 28.
- two or more seats can be enclosed together in a shell 200.
- the shell 200 defines a private space enclosing any suitable piece of furniture (i.e seat, bed, table, sofa, etc.) as well as any furniture combination, like a private lounge or rest area.
- any suitable piece of furniture i.e seat, bed, table, sofa, etc.
- any furniture combination like a private lounge or rest area.
- the shell 200 can be mounted directly onto the seat structure so that the set comprising the multi-function seat 100 and the shell 200 can be easily mounted on a platform or any other fixation means when in use in an aircraft or in any other environment when it is convenient to be able to move the shell and the seat simultaneously.
- Such movements would include forward and aft positioning, inboard and outboard positioning, and rotational or swivel movement, all relative to the direction of travel of the vehicle, or when mounted on a non-moving structure.
- single multi-function seats 100 that have the ability of movements, including forward and aft positioning, inboard and outboard positioning, and rotational or swivel movement, all relative to the direction of travel of the vehicle, or when mounted on a non-moving structure, are typically not offered with a cocoon shell 200.
- the requirement for a cocoon seat for constant privacy is not necessarily required.
- the need for privacy arises when there are several individuals who need to sleep in the same space.
- the single multi-function seat 100 are typically all of same design, with visual differences in materials (leathers, stitching) and colour.
- the multifunction seat 100 has an open design concept, whereby the multi-function seat 100 is placed within a shell 200 including a louvre/blade design 220, which allows air and visual penetration from certain angles.
- a distinct yet elegant sphere of privacy is provided.
- this is accomplished without a solid structure around the multi-function seat 100, or the demarcated private space.
- the louvre/blade design 220 allows higher design flexibility as well as achieving a visually lighter, less encumbering interior design of the space.
- a higher degree of design options can be utilized to achieve significantly higher desired level of customization.
- the multi-function seat 100 moves from the upright position, figure 20, into a relax position, figures 21 and 22, the multi-function seat 100 movement is mechanically linked to the extension of the shell 200.
- the shell 200 is made in two parts, a forward part frame 212 and a rear part frame 211.
- an expandable structure 230 (such as for example a fabric piece) is expanded to fill the span between the shell rear and front parts 211 and 212.
- two fabric walls 231 and 232 (such as for example two fabric pieces) are spanned along the outer and inner vertical surfaces of the shell delimiting frame 210, while a third narrow fabric wall 233 which breadth is equal to the thickness of the shell frame 210 is expanded along the top edge.
- a third narrow fabric wall 233 with a breadth equal to the thickness of the shell frame 210 can be deployed in the same surface as the surface of top edge of the frame 210.
- the shell can advantageously include a closet 600 as represented in figure 35.
- a plurality of blades is fixed inside the frame supporting structure.
- the blade design can be of a rigid or flexible material, attached permanently or allowing individual blades 220 to be detached when and if needed be it for replacement of an individual blade, or to have access to the seat structure behind such blades.
- the blades are attached in a fixed position
- the blades are attached via a rotating spindle which allows all the blades to be rotated in unison through a mechanical or pneumatic mechanism which can be manually, electrically or electronically controlled. This allows the variation of the visual penetration of light, as well as of the surrounding sounds and acoustics.
- Each cushion comprises a plurality of inflatable bags 401, the bags being arranged either individually or in a group of bags.
- Each bag or group of bags disposes of a captor and a valve (not illustrated) as well as a pneumatic control system.
- the inflatable bags 401 are inserted into an outer covering or casing 402. If needed the bags 401 and/or the outer covering 402 of each cushion can be attached through seams or other adapted means in order to control the final shape of the cushion setting.
- the outer covering 402 is made in a fabric with a controlled elasticity and thickness so that independently of the pressure in the inflatable bags the inner structure of the cushion remains imperceptible to the seated person.
- the pneumatic and/or Hydraulic control system can be for example a microprocessor controlled unit designed to be used with a plurality of pressure control valves and to provide W the necessary pressure control adjustment and control of the opening and closing of the valves, in this manner adjusting and controlling the pressure within each inflatable bag individually.
- adjusting the fluid pressure in each individual inflatable bag or group of bags are controlled and optimized, these include but are not limited to: the seat contour and shape,
- the multi-function seat 100 as well as any ancillary equipment's can be controlled by a wireless controller 180.

- the function of the first plurality of entry keys and of the second plurality of entry keys can be programmed for their function/script as well as for their indications/display, so that each of the plurality of entry keys is legible with a display available in different fonts, languages and that their function can be tailored to the needs of a user.
- the controller is internally lighted resulting that all indications are legible in low ambient lighting conditions, i.e. with a backlight module.
- a retractable privacy fan 500 can be deployed to provide the required privacy.
- the retractable privacy fan 500 can be of various material types, both rigid and flexible, both semi-transparent and/or opaque and provides both visual and physical demarcation for a given space.
- the retractable privacy fan 500 makes it impossible for another person to enter space. This means that the retractable privacy fan device effectively acts as a visual shield and also prevents access to a given space.
- the retractable privacy fan 500 comprises a plurality of dividing parts each having, a first end connected through a pivot/ point/rotation axis with the rest of the plurality of elongated dividing parts by a connecting position, wherein the connecting portion is integrated in or on a side of the shell 200.
