Description

DESCRIPTION
TRANSLUCENT TILE AND A METHOD OF PRODUCTION THEREOF
Subject of the Invention
The present invention relates to translucent floor and wall tiles, on the surface of which patterns can be designed by making use of fixed or changeable pattern templates and which provide aesthetical view to the places and moreover which can be used for some purposes such as notice, warning, direction etc. by placing, in the rear part, light sources in different colors and properties such as LED and fluorescent, and to the production method thereof.
State of the Art In the embodiments according to the present state of the art, transparent or translucent tiles cannot be produced in the conventional ceramic tile production methods, however it is known in the world and in Turkey that dining table objects such as translucent glazed plate and cups known as "Bone China" are produced. In the porcelain products, produced by means of this method, the bone meal is added into the prescription. The bone meal has some disadvantages such as not being economical, being difficult to be provided, not being able to provide light penetration in desired level. Therefore, the ceramic/porcelain tiles according to the present invention not including bone meal are developed, wherein the translucent property of it is provided by means of its different active ingredients.
Object of the Invention The object of the present invention is to produce translucent ceramic/porcelain tiles to provide an aesthetical view by using different pattern templates and light sources in different colors and properties. Description of the Invention:
The present invention relates to translucent floor and wall tiles, on the surface of which patterns can be designed by making use of fixed or changeable pattern templates and which provide aesthetical view to the places and moreover which can be used for some purposes such as notice, warning, direction etc. by placing, in the rear part, light sources in different colors and properties such as LED and fluorescent, and to the production method thereof.
The floor and wall tiles developed within the present invention are ceramic/porcelain, and the tiles made of different materials that can be made to assume translucent characteristic, and to make these tiles to have translucent characteristic are also included in the present invention.
The conventional tile production process comprises the steps of blending and pulping the raw materials (clay, kaolin, silica sand, feldspar etc.) in certain proportions depending on the characteristic of the desired final product, shaping (pressing) the pulp after the granulization in the spray drier and firing the resulting biscuit. In the ceramic tile production, some products undergo a glazing process before firing. Ceramic and porcelain tiles produced with conventional prescriptions and conventional processes are the light-proof (nontransparent) products.
The translucent tiles according to the present invention are produced by firing and pressing the biscuit as in the unglazed porcelain production process but in thinner form. Within the present invention, in order to produce translucent tiles, some active materials providing translucency are added into their formula or the amount of one material available in the formula is increased. In order to provide translucency, frit (glassy material active in forming the glassy structure) or ground glass is added into the tile structure within the present invention. Within the present invention, it is also possible to make the tile have a translucent characteristic by increasing the amount of feldspar in the tile structure.
Although it is possible to add the above-mentioned active materials into the translucent tile structure developed within the present invention separately, and to apply the mentioned processes separately; it is also possible to add different combinations of the said materials into the structure and to apply different combinations of the said processes on the tile structure at the same time, and therefore to obtain translucent tiles. In other words, while it is possible to obtain translucent tiles developed within the present invention by adding only ground glass or frit into the tile structure or only increasing the amount of feldspar inside the tile structure; it is also possible to obtain translucent tiles within the present invention by adding both ground glass and frit, or adding only frit to the tile structure and at the same time increasing the amount of feldspar, and as another alternative adding only ground glass into the tile structure and increasing amount of feldspar at the same time. It is possible within the present invention that three different processes are applied at the same time, in other words both frit and ground glass are added into the tile structure, and the amount of feldspar in the formula is increased, therefore translucent tiles are obtained. In order for the ceramics which have not been made translucent, to be pressed, 30-40% clay or plastic materials are added into their structures. As intensive amounts of frit, ground glass or melting materials are used in the tile structures in order to make the tiles produced within the present invention translucent, there is not adequate amount of plastic material in the prescriptions of the translucent tiles, facilitating the shaping. Thus, in the production of translucent tile, with the aim of preventing the tile to be broken during the pressing and firing processes and ensure the permanent resistance, organic and inorganic binders are added into the structure of the transparent and translucent tiles within the scope of the invention. Many organic polymers such as silicates, lignosulfonates, starch and glucose- derrivatives, polyacrylates, polysulfonates, polyphosphates, cellulose-derivatives and carboxylic acid polymers and polyvinyl resins can be used as bindings.
For the firing process of the translucent tiles according to the present invention, refractory plates with angobe are used. In the firing process of the translucent tiles according to the present invention, the firing regimes used in the production of the standard tiles are used, and the raw materials added into the tile structure or the differences in the raw material ratios require some firing regime parameters such as firing duration and heat to be changed.
As the floor and wall tiles according to the present invention are translucent, they can be used for many different purposes. As it is stated above, by placing light sources and fixed or changeable pattern templates on the rear parts of the tiles, the desired different patterns are shown on the tile structure and an aesthetical view is created in the place. Moreover, it is also possible to use the tiles for amusement purposes by locating motion-sensitive sensors on the rear part of the tiles. Moreover the tile surface can be patterned by firing the tile again after applying decoration press materials on the tile in various sizes and patterns by means of some methods like serigraph press. By adding light-holding pigments into the decoration press materials, tiles having patterns that can sparkle in dark can be obtained following a certain light absorption.
