Description

A PORTABLE APPARATUS FOR TRANSPORTING A DISPLAY CONSTRUCTION AND A METHOD FOR USING THE APPARATUS
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to the field of portable displays, primarily for an apparatus for transporting portable displays and a method for using the apparatus.
BACKGROUND
Portable displays are commonly seen in many instances, ranging from indoor events to outdoor events. Some of these instances may include, for example, handheld placard messages at protests/picket lines, back-packed product/on- promotion signages at exhibitions, handheld signs by security personnel during instances of crowd management, and so forth.
In the aforementioned instances, the portable displays are typically of a fixed structural configuration, and variation of the structural configuration of the portable displays is not easily done. As such, whenever a change in the structural configuration of the portable displays is desired, a fabrication time for parts to enable the change in the structural configuration is typically required, and correspondingly, a delay stemming from the fabrication time is undesirable and inconvenient.
In addition, many examples of the portable displays currently in use are designed solely to be either handheld or back-packed. Yet again, variation of how the portable displays are transported is not easily done. Thus, whenever a change in a transportation manner for the portable displays is desired, fabrication time to enable the change in transportation manner is typically required. Yet again, a delay stemming from the fabrication time is undesirable and inconvenient. Thus, it can be seen that existing portable displays typically require significant fabrication durations in relation to changing various aspects of the portable displays. This is undesirable and inconvenient. The present invention aims to address and solve this problem relating to customization of portable displays.
SUMMARY
In a first aspect, there is provided a portable apparatus for transporting a display construction with a structural appearance that can be varied. The apparatus includes a rigid backing platform having at least one holder mounted at a first face, the at least one holder being for placement of at least one structure used for the display construction; and at least one strap attachable to the backing platform, the at least one strap being for either securing or draping the portable apparatus to a transporter of the portable apparatus. It is advantageous that the backing platform supports the display construction in a manner where the structural appearance of the display construction is maintained during transportation of the display construction. It is preferable that the at least one strap is securable to the transporter. The at least one strap may be either permanently attached to the backing platform or releasably attached to the backing platform.
A second face of the backing platform may include a layer of padding for either comfort of a human carrier or prevention of impact damage on a vehicular carrier. The transporter may be either the human carrier or the vehicular carrier.
Preferably, the at least one structure has a cross-sectional shape such as, for example, ellipse, circle, triangular, quadrilateral or polygonal. It is preferable that the cross-sectional shape and area of the at least one holder allows the at least one structure to fit in the at least one holder without allowing the at least one structure to rotate in the at least one holder. The at least one holder may be either permanently mounted to the backing platform or releasably mounted to the backing platform. The backing platform may preferably include a plurality of slots for the releasable attachment of the at least one strap to the backing platform, the plurality of slots allowing for either a variation of an arrangement of the at least one strap or attachment of additional straps to the backing platform. The variation in the arrangement of the at least one strap may be for a purpose such as, for example, stability of the display construction while on the transporter, secure fitment on the transporter, or both of the aforementioned. The backing platform may include a plurality of mounts for the releasable mounting of the at least one holder, the plurality of mounts allowing for a variation of both a position and a facing of the at least one holder.
In a second aspect, there is provided a method for assembling a transportable display construction with a structural appearance that can be varied. The method includes mounting at least one holder on a plurality of mounts on a first face of a rigid backing platform; placing at least one structure used for the display construction into the at least one holder; and securing the rigid backing platform to a transporter for subsequent transportation. It is advantageous that the backing platform supports the display construction in a manner where the structural appearance of the display construction is maintained during transportation of the display construction. The transporter may be either a human carrier or a vehicular carrier. The rigid backing platform may be secured using at least one strap. The at least one strap may be either permanently attached to the backing platform or releasably attached to the backing platform.
The backing platform may include a plurality of slots for the releasable attachment of the at least one strap to the backing platform, the plurality of slots allowing for either a variation of an arrangement of the at least one strap or attachment of additional straps to the backing platform. The variation in the arrangement of the at least one strap may advantageously be for a purpose such as, for example, stability of the display construction while on the transporter, secure fitment on the transporter, or both of the aforementioned. The method may further include an action such as, for example, attaching further straps, varying strap arrangement, or a combination of both the aforementioned, if the display construction is unstable after securing the rigid backing platform to the transporter.
The at least one structure may have a cross-sectional shape such as, for example, ellipse, circle, triangular, quadrilateral or polygonal. The cross- sectional shape and area of the at least one holder may preferably allow the at least one structure to fit in the at least one holder without allowing the at least one structure to rotate in the at least one holder. The at least one holder may be either permanently mounted to the backing platform or releasably mounted to the backing platform. The backing platform may include a plurality of mounts for the releasable mounting of the at least one holder, the plurality of mounts allowing for a variation of both a position and a facing of the at least one holder.

For example, the cuboidal object 510 as mentioned earlier does not vary its appearance. The backing platform 22 may be made from a material which depends on a load of the display construction. For example, the heavier the display construction, the more rigid the material used for the backing platform 22.
The at least one holder 24 may be for the placement of at least one structure 502 used for the display construction (as mentioned earlier). The display construction may be built up either before or after the at least one structure 502 is placed into the at least one holder 24. The at least one holder 24 may be either permanently mounted to the backing platform 22 or releasably mounted to the backing platform 22. The at least one holder 24 may be releasably mounted to the backing platform 22 using, for example, velcro, adhesives, at least one mount on the backing platform 22, and so forth.
Referring to Figure 6, there is shown a mount 28 in a form of a hole which allows the at least one holder 24 to hook onto the backing platform 22 with a latch 30. It should be noted that each holder 24 may include more than one latch 30. Furthermore, the hole of the mount 28 need not be square-shaped as shown. The hole of the mount 28 may be in a shape of a polygon, as this allows a facing of each holder 24 to be varied. For example, the holder 24 need not necessarily face a direction perpendicular to ground as shown in Figure 1. The holder 24 may be positioned at an incline to the ground as shown in Figure 2. Both the positioning and location of the holder 24 may be dependent on a form of the display construction.
The at least one holder 24 is shown in Figures 1 - 3 to be a form which allows the at least one structure 502 to be placed into the at least one holder 24. A coss-sectional shape and area of the at least one holder 24 may allow the at least one structure 502 to fit in the at least one holder 24 without allowing the at least one structure 502 to rotate in the at least one holder 24. The display construction may not be able to maintain structural integrity if the at least one structure 502 was allowed to rotate in the at least one holder 24. This is especially so if the signage 500 is made from a flexible material.
Alternatively, the at least one holder 24 may be in a form where there is a male extension for coupling with a female cavity (with a substantially similar cross-sectional shape and area as the male extension) of the at least one structure 502 (not shown). The at least one structure 502 may have a cross- sectional shape and/or cavity shape such as, for example, ellipse, circle, triangular, quadrilateral, polygonal and so forth. While Figures 1 and 2 show the at least one holder 24 being positioned at the backing platform 22, Figure 3 shows that the at least one holder 24 may be positioned at an angle to the first face 26 of the backing platform 22 in an alternative embodiment of the portable apparatus 20.
The portable apparatus 20 may also include at least one strap 30 attachable to the backing platform 22. The at least one strap 30 may be for either securing or draping the portable apparatus 20 to a transporter of the portable apparatus 20. The transporter may be either a human carrier or a vehicular carrier. A length of the at least one strap 30 may be varied, and each strap 30 need not be a continual length of material (For example, as shown in Figure 3). Each strap 30 may include at least one quick release clip 50 (as shown in Figure 3) for quick removal of the portable apparatus 20 from the transporter. Each strap 30 may be padded for comfort of the human carrier. A variation in an arrangement of the at least one strap 30 allows the portable apparatus 20 to be transported like, for example, a backpack (as shown in Figure 1 ), a slingbag (as shown in Figure 2), a belt (as shown in Figure 3), and so forth. The variation in the arrangement of the at least one strap may be for, for example, stability of the display construction while on the transporter, secure fitment on the transporter, or both of the aforementioned. Referring to Figure 3, the at least one strap 30 may be securable to the transporter where the quick release clip 50 couples to interlockable partners on the transporter. The at least one strap 30 may be either permanently attached to the backing platform 22 or releasably attached to the backing platform 22. The backing platform 22 may include a plurality of slots 36 for the releasable attachment of the at least one strap 30 to the backing platform 22. If the at least one strap 30 is not permanently attached to the backing platform 22, the plurality of slots 36 allows for a variation of an arrangement of the at least one strap 30. Alternatively, the plurality of slots 36 also allow for additional straps 30 to be attached to the backing platform 22.
Referring to Figure 1 , a second face 40 of the backing platform 22 may include a layer of padding 42 for either comfort of the human carrier or prevention of impact damage on the vehicular carrier by the backing platform 22. The layer of padding 42 may be made from, for example, foam, sponge, a polymer-based material, elastomer, air pockets and so forth. The layer of padding 42 may also be for damping forces initially exerted by the display construction on the backing platform 22 and consequently transmitted to the transporter.
The large variety of display constructions which may be transported using the portable apparatus 20 enables the portable apparatus 20 to be used for a wide variety of circumstances such as, for example, exhibitions, protests, picket lines, performances, and so forth.
Referring to Figure 4, there is also provided a method 400 for assembling a transportable display construction with a structural appearance that can be varied. Some examples of the display construction are shown in Figure 5. Figure 5(a) shows a display construction including a signage 500 with supporting structures 502. The signage 500 may enable information to be incorporated into both a front face 504 of the signage 500 and a rear face 506 of the signage 500. The information may include, for example, images, text, LED lighting arrays, and so forth. Figure 5(b) shows a display construction including a cuboidal object 510 with supporting structures 502. The cuboidal object 510 may enable information to be incorporated into every surface of the cuboidal object 510. h addition, the cuboidal object 510 may also be used as a platform for the placement of objects, such as, for example, showcases, dioramas, inflatable objects, and so forth. Furthermore, the cuboidal object 510 may be hollow with transparent surfaces for the display of objects placed within the cuboidal object 510. The objects may be, for example, showcases, dioramas, inflatable objects, and so forth. Figure 5(c) shows a display construction including a plurality of the signages 500 with supporting structures 502. It should be noted that the signages 500 may be made from a flexible material. In addition, the signage 500 may be a flat panel display device such as, for example, an LCD screen, a plasma screen, an OLED screen and the like.
During instances where the display construction includes components which consume power, such as, for example, LED lighting arrays and flat panel display devices, the portable apparatus 20 may also include a power source like a battery to power the components. It should be understood that known wiring arrangements and connections may be employed for the power circuit used in the portable apparatus 20.
The method 400 includes mounting at least one holder 502 on a plurality of mounts on a first face 26 of a rigid backing platform 22 (402). The backing platform 22 supports the display construction in a manner where the structural appearance of the display construction is maintained during transportation of the display construction.
Referring to Figure 6, there is shown a mount 28 in a form of a hole which allows the at least one holder 24 to hook onto the backing platform 22 with a latch 31. It should be noted that each holder 24 may include more than one latch 31. Furthermore, the hole of the mount 28 need not be square-shaped as shown. The hole of the mount 28 may be in a shape of a polygon, as this allows a position and a facing of each holder 24 to be varied. For example, the holder 24 need not necessarily face a direction perpendicular to ground as shown in Figure 1. The holder 24 may be positioned at an incline to the ground as shown in Figure 2. Both the positioning and location of the holder 24 may be dependent on a form of the display construction.
The method 400 includes placing the at least one structure 502 into the at least one holder 24 (404). The display construction may be built up either before or after the at least one structure 502 is placed into the at least one holder 24. The at least one holder 24 is shown in Figures 1 - 3 to be a form which allows the at least one structure 502 to be slotted into the at least one holder 24. A cross-sectional shape and area of the at least one holder 24 may allow the at least one structure 502 to fit in the at least one holder 24 without allowing the at least one structure 502 to rotate in the at least one holder 24. The display construction may not be able to maintain structural integrity if the at least one structure 502 was allowed to rotate in the at least one holder 24. While Figures 1 and 2 show the at least one holder 24 being positioned against the backing platform 22, Figure 3 shows that the at least one holder 24 may be positioned at an angle to the first face 26 of the backing platform 22 in an embodiment of the portable apparatus 20.
The method 400 may also include securing the backing platform 22 to a transporter (406). The securing of the backing platform 22 may be by using at least one strap 30. The transporter may be either a human carrier or a vehicular carrier. A length of the at least one strap 30 may be varied, and each strap 30 need not be a continual length of material (as shown in Figure 3). Referring to Figure 3, the at least one strap 30 may be securable to the transporter where the quick release clip 50 couples to corresponding partners on the transporter. The at least one strap 30 may be either permanently attached to the backing platform 22 or releasably attached to the backing platform 22. The backing platform 22 may includes a plurality of slots 36 for the releasable attachment of the at least one strap 30 to the backing platform 22. The plurality of slots 36 allows for a variation of an arrangement of the at least one strap 30. Alternatively, the plurality of slots 36 also allow for additional straps 30 to be attached to the backing platform 22.
After securing the backing platform 22 to the transporter, no further action is required (410) if the display construction supported by the backing platform 22 is stable (408) during transportation of the display construction. If the display construction is not stable (408), further straps 30 may be attached to the backing platform 22, variation in arrangement of straps 30 may be made or both of the aforementioned actions may be performed (412).
it is preferable that the method 400 allows the backing platform 22 to support the display construction in a manner where the structural appearance of the display construction is maintained during transportation of the display construction.
Whilst there has been described in the foregoing description preferred embodiments of the present invention, it will be understood by those skilled in the technology concerned that many variations or modifications in details of design or construction may be made without departing from the present invention.
