Description
PROTECTIVE GARMENT
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a protective garment and, more specifically, to a garment to be worn by a caretaker when holding and/or feeding a baby or infant.
Background to the Invention
When being held or fed by a caretaker, infants and babies frequently burp or regurgitate thereby soiling the clothing of the caretaker. The clothing can be protected by placing a cloth over a shoulder of the caretaker on which the infant or baby rests its head. However, such a cloth is easily displaced or soaked so that it only offers limited protection.
The inventor therefore believes that a need exists for providing a protective garment that is able to offer reliable protection to the clothing of a caretaker holding and/or feeding an infant or baby.
Summary of the Invention
Thus, according to the invention, there is provided a protective garment configured and dimensioned to be worn by an adult including:- a front panel sized and dimensioned to cover at least a substantial portion of a front side of a torso of the adult, the front panel including an operatively exposed first layer manufactured from an absorbent material and a second backing layer manufactured from a fluid impervious material.
The front panel may be provided with fastening means to permit fastening of the front panel around a neck of the adult. The fastening means may be in the form of a set of strings or bands.
The garment may include a rear panel sized and dimensioned to cover at least a substantial portion of a rear side of the torso of the adult. The rear panel may include an operatively exposed first layer manufactured from an absorbent material and a second backing layer manufactured from a fluid impervious material.
The front and rear panels may form a unit in which a cut-out neck portion and cut-out arm portions may be defined.
In a first embodiment of the invention, the rear panel may include two portions connectable by a fastening means located along free edge regions of the rear panel, which free edge regions extend along a central longitudinal axis of said panel.
In a second embodiment of the invention, a cut-out neck portion and cut-out arm portions may be defined in the front and rear panels and the panels may be connectable by fastening means located along free side regions of the front and rear panels, which free side regions extend from the cut-out arm portions.
The fastening means may be selected from the group including: a set of bands, a set of strings, one or more hook and loop arrangements (Velcro®), press studs, and buttons.
Alternatively, the front panel may be provided with a zip-fastener which may be opened to permit a user to easily put on and take off the garment.
The front panel may be provided with one or more pockets to facilitate storing of objects which the adult may need when holding/ feeding the baby or infant.
The front panel may further include a flap portion cut out of the front panel in an area which in use overlays one side of the chest of the user. The flap portion
may be secured to the front panel by means of any suitable fastening means, for example, press-studs, Velcro®, buttons, and the like. Undoing the fastening means permits lifting of the flap so that the breast of a female adult may be exposed for the purpose of breast feeding.
The first layer of the front panel and rear panels may be manufactured from terry cloth.
The backing layer of the front and rear panels may be manufactured from a synthetic plastic material. The synthetic plastics material is typically polyvinylchloride (PVC).
The inventor believes that it is an advantage of the present invention that the absorbent layer of the garment provides a comfortable surface for a baby or infant to rest its head on whilst absorbing any saliva or regurgitated fluid or foodstuff. The fluid impervious backing layer offers protection to the clothing of a caretaker, even if the first later should become soaked and not be able to absorb additional fluid.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The invention will now be described by way of the following, non-limiting examples with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:-
Figures 1 and 2 show front and rear views respectively of a first embodiment of a protective garment in accordance with the present invention;
Figures 3 and 4 show front and rear views respectively of a second embodiment of a protective garment in accordance with the present invention;
Figures 5 and 6 show front and rear views respectively of a third embodiment of a protective garment in accordance with the present invention; and
Figures 7 and 8 show front and rear views respectively of a fourth embodiment of a protective garment in accordance with the present invention.
In the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally indicates an embodiment of a protective garment in accordance with the present invention.
The protective garment 10 configured and dimensioned to be worn by an adult (not shown). The garment 10 includes a front panel 12 sized and dimensioned to cover at least a substantial portion of a front side of a torso of the adult, the front panel including an operatively exposed first layer 14 manufactured from an absorbent material and a second backing layer 16 manufactured from a fluid impervious material.
The garment 10 further includes a rear panel 18 sized and dimensioned to cover at least a substantial portion of a rear side of a torso of the adult. The rear panel 18 also includes an operatively exposed first layer 20 manufactured from an absorbent material and a second backing layer (not shown) manufactured from a fluid impervious material.
The front and rear panels 12 and 18 form a unit in which a cut-out neck portion 22 and cut-out arm portions 24 are defined.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the rear panel 18 includes two portions connectable by a fastening means in the form of sets of bands 26 located along free edge regions 28 of the rear panel 18, which free edge regions 28 extend along a longitudinal axis of said panel 18.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4, cut-out neck portion 22 and cut-out arm portions 24 are defined in the front and rear panels 12 and 18 and the panels 12 and 18 are connectable by fastening means in the form of sets of bands 26 located along free side regions 30 of the front and rear panels 12 and 18, which free side regions 30 extend from the cut-out arm portions 24.
It is to be appreciated, that the fastening means is not limited to the bands 26 of the embodiments shown and can further be selected from the group including: a set of strings, one or more hook and loop arrangements (Velcro®), press studs, and buttons.
The first layer 14 of the front panel and rear panels 12 and 18 is manufactured from terry cloth.
The backing layer 16 of the front and rear panels 12 and 18 is manufactured from a synthetic plastic material, typically polyvinylchloride (PVC).
The front panel 12 is provided with a pocket 32 on the first layer 14. In this manner, a convenient storage space is provided to store, for example, a feeding bottle.
Figures 5 to 8 show embodiments of the invention (one sleeve-less and one with long arms) in which the front panel 12 is provided with a zip-fastener 34 which can be opened to permit a user to easily put on and take off the garment.
In these embodiments, the front panel 12 further includes a flap portion 36 cut out of the front panel 12 in an area which in use overlays one side of the chest of the user as can be seen in Figures 5 and 7. The flap portion 36 is secured to the front panel by means of any suitable fastening means, for example, press-studs 38 (see Figure 7). Undoing the press studs 38 permits lifting of the flap 36 so
that the breast of a female adult can be exposed for the purpose of breast feeding the baby or infant.
It is to be appreciated, that the invention is not limited to any particular embodiment or configuration as hereinbefore generally described or illustrated.
