Definitions

  • Portable power tool with key storing means and key for that power tool .
  • the invention relates to a portable power tool with an output shaft having a lockable mounting device for retaining a working implement.
  • the invention concerns a power tool of the above type with a key operated mounting device for retaining the working implement as well as a key adapted for that power tool .
  • a problem common to power tools of this type is the difficulty to safely store the key when not in use on one hand, and to have immediate access to the key when needed on the other hand.
  • this problem concerns portable grinders and drilling machines where grinding wheels and drills, respectively, have to be changed quite frequently.
  • An object of the invention is to provide a portable power tool which has an output shaft with a mounting device for a working implement and which comprises a means for carrying a mounting device operating key without interfering with the handling of the power tool and which provides a safe and easily accessible storage for the key when the latter is not in use.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a key that is adapted to be safely carried on the power tool and readily accessible when needed.
  • Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a power tool according to the invention.
  • Fig. 2 shows, on a larger scale, a perspective view of a key according to the invention.
  • Fig. 3 shows, on a still larger scale, a longitudinal section through a handle of the power tool and a key stored in that handle .
  • Fig. 4 shows a cross section through the handle and the key in Fig. 3.
  • Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of the power tool in Fig. 1 but illustrating the working implement mounting device and the mounting device operating key in engaged position.
  • the power tool illustrated in the drawings comprises a pneumatic grinder including a housing 10 with a main handle 11 attached to its rear end, and a secondary handle 12 secured to one side of the housing 10 by means of a screw 15. See Fig. 3.
  • the main handle 11 is provided with a throttle valve to be maneuvered by a lever 13, and a fitting 14 for connection of a pressure air line.
  • the housing 10 contains a rotation motor arranged to power an output shaft on which is carried a mounting device 16 for securing a working implement in the form of a grinding wheel 17 to the output shaft.
  • the mounting device 16 comprises a non-illustrated hexagonal socket portion to be engaged by a key 20 for tightening or loosening the mounting device 16 at change of working implement.
  • the power tool further comprises a safe guard 22 for protection against the grinding wheel 17.
  • the key 20 comprises a cylindrical handle portion 26 and a connection portion 27 in the form of a hexagon wrench.
  • the handle portion 26 comprises a pocket 28 to receive the connection portion 27, and the connection portion 27 is pivotally supported by its one end on the handle portion 26 via a transverse pin 29 for movement between a folded position and an extended active position. In the folded position the connection portion 27 is completely received in the pocket 28, and a wire spring 31 is arranged to bias the connection portion 27 toward its extended position. See Figs. 3 and 2, respectively.
  • the handle portion 26 is provided with a grip 32 at its outer end.
  • the secondary handle 12 is tubular with an outer open end for getting access to the mounting screw 15 and for being able to receive the key 20 in a store or stowed away position. This is obtained in that the handle portion 26 has an outer diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the handle 12, and the connection portion 27 is completely received in the pocket 28 in a folded position. Moreover, the secondary handle 12 is provided with an inner sleeve 33 extending about half the length of the length of the handle 12 and provides a shoulder 30 to be engaged by the connection portion 27 as the key 20 occupies its store position inside the handle 12. Since the connection portion 27 is constantly biased towards its extended position it will be in constant contact with the inner surface of the secondary handle 12.
  • connection portion 27 will easily get into engagement with inner end surface of the sleeve 33 to form a lock means for retaining the key 20 in its store position inside the handle 12. In the store position of the key 20 the outer end and the grip 32 of the handle portion 26 will be substantially flush with the outer end of the handle 12. It is to be observed that the connection portion 27 has two purposes, namely to act as a lock means for the key 20 in a part-extended position when the latter occupies its storage position inside the housing handle 12, see fig 3, and to act as a connection element in a fully extended position when the key 20 is removed from its storage position and is about to be connected to the mounting device 16 at tightening or loosening the latter. See Figs . 2 and 5.
  • the handle 12 is formed on its inside with two pairs of cam surfaces 34a, 35a and 34b, 35b, respectively, which are arranged to urge the connection portion 27 to the fully folded position to release the key 20 from its locked position inside the handle 12. This is obtained by using the grip 32 and turn the key 20 about ninety degrees from a fully locked position (see Fig. 4) , whereby either one of the cam surfaces 34,35 will urge the connection portion 27 inwards and interrupt the engagement between the connection portion 27 and the shoulder 30 of the sleeve 33, thereby releasing the key 20 for operation.
  • a coil spring 37 is disposed between the sleeve 33 and an outer radial flange 38 of the handle portion 26 and arranged to exert an axial bias force on the key 20 to facilitate removal of the latter from the handle 12 after having been turned ninety degrees to disengage the connection portion 27 from its locking cooperation with the sleeve 33.
  • Fig. 5 there is illustrated the operation position of the key 20 while tighten or loosen the mounting device 16 to thereby secure the working implement 17 to the output shaft of the power tool .
  • a foldable key 20 for operating a working implement mounting device 16 and adapt it to be received in a store space within a handle 12 of the power tool there is obtained a means by which the key 20 is safely stored when not in use and readily accessible when needed.
  • the foldable key and the very compact handle arrangement provide a key storage means which does not impair the handling of the power tool and still makes it possible to have the key readily available when needed.
