Abstract

A vertical storage rack system (100) includes a vertically moveable transport conveyor (106) and one or more vertical feed conveyors (104) that vertically extend between the various rack levels (109) so that items (110) can be loaded and/or unloaded at any of the levels (109) without the need for the vertically moveable transport (106) to return to a loading/unloading level. This vertical rack system (100) can be used to load and unload items (110) from the racks (102) as well as rearrange items in the racks (102). This system and technique allows items (110) to be continuously moved in a vertical direction as well as sorts or merges the items (110) at high speeds. In other words, this arrangement minimizes the vertical positioning of the vertically moveable transport conveyor (106), such as a cross-belt conveyor, before it can discharge (and/or load) items, thereby improving throughput.
