Abstract
Disclosed is a fuel cell comprising a membrane electrode assembly (10) which is composed of fuel electrodes (11, 12), air electrodes (13, 14) and an electrolyte membrane (15) sandwiched between the fuel electrodes (11, 12) and the air electrodes (13, 14), a fuel supply mechanism (14) which is arranged on the fuel electrodes (11, 12) side of the membrane electrode assembly (10) and supplies a fuel to the fuel electrodes (11, 12), and a moisture retention layer (20) which is arranged on the air electrodes (13, 14) side of the membrane electrode assembly (10) and impregnated with water generated at the air electrodes (13, 14). The moisture retention layer (20) has a first moisture retention portion (22), which faces regions of the air electrodes (13, 14) wherein the temperature is high when power is generated, and a second moisture retention portion (21), which faces regions of the air electrodes (13, 14) wherein the temperature is low when power is generated. The second moisture retention portion (21) is so formed that water vapor from the membrane electrode assembly (10) is more easily discharged therethrough to the outside air than the first moisture retention portion (22).
