Abstract

Provided is an optical pickup device which can appropriately converge a light reflected from each disc via two objective lenses onto a light reception surface of a photo-detector. A birefringent element (15) has different refractive indexes in the laser light polarization direction (P polarization) when the laser beam goes from a polarization beam splitter (14) to an HD objective lens (21) (approach route) and in the laser beam polarization direction (S polarization) when the laser beam goes from the HD objective lens (21) (return route) to the polarization splitter (14). Accordingly, there arises an optical path difference ΔL between the optical paths of the laser beam in the approach route and the return route. By replacing a glass plate (40) with the birefringent element (15) having the optical path difference ΔL which coincides with a convergence position shift amount ΔLpd of the light reflected from the HD, it is possible to appropriately converge the reflected light from the HD onto the light reception surface of a photo-detector (28).
