Abstract
This invention provides EDLC comprising polar plates the number of which has been determined by a logical relationship between service temperature and decomposition voltage of water. EDLC (20) comprises bipolar plates (7), which have an electrolyte layer (6) on its both sides and have been stacked through separators (5), and the electrolyte contains water. The number (N) of constituent cells in EDLC (20) and the number of bipolar plates are determined so that the voltage obtained by dividing external applied voltage E (volts) by the number (N) of constituent cells defined by the number of sets of a pair of positive and negative electrodes is below the decomposition voltage (V, volts) of water determined based on an electrochemical reaction in a hydrogen-proton system, an electrochemical reaction in a water-hydrogen peroxide system, and an electrochemical reaction in a hydrogen peroxide-oxygen system, in relation with the service temperature.
