Definitions
- the present invention relates to a self-adhesive article that is made a of styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer and, optionally, an oil.
- the self-adhesive article has a number of applications - hospital, nursing home, manufacturing plant, and the redetachable fixing of articles in the home, school and office.
- ostomy devices such as ostomy devices, wound irrigation or drainage devices, and condom catheters
- to fasten clothing e.g., a removable liner
- shoes e.g., straps on shoes
- affix items in the home, office, school, or other environment to a surface, e.g., hanging pictures on a wall.
- An adhesive typically used in the medical field is that disclosed in U.S. 6,458,886 to Nielsen et al., which contains a block polymer and a water-soluble or water- swellable hydrocolloid.
- This type of adhesive may also contain an elastomeric mix and a hydrocolloid, wherein the hydrocolloid powders dispersed in the polymer or elastomeric mix renders the adhesive agent capable of adhering to moist skin (wet tack).
- the pressure sensitive adhesives of this type degrade due to the breakdown of the hydrocolloid; are "wet" and not cleanable; and can adhere to themselves but are inseparable.
- the adhesive may be: a drying adhesive such as glue or rubber cement; hot glue such as those used with a glue gun; and adhesive tape such as masking tape and cellophane tape. These adhesives degrade in certain conditions such as heat or humidity, often permanently affix items together, and are not cleanable.
- Fasteners such as Velcro
- Velcro are also used in the home, school, workplace, medical arena, and manufacturing environments to affix items to surfaces or one another.
- the benefits of these fasteners, particularly Velcro, is that they are dry, cleanable, strong, stable, and may be opened and closed repeatedly; however, these fasteners are often made of plastic or metal, which can limit their use in some environments.
- the self-adhesive article exhibits the desired properties.
- the self-adhesive article has a surface that is smooth to glossy. It is made from a composition that consists essentially of styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer and, optionally, an oil selected from the group consisting of napthenic oils, aromatic oils, natural oils, paraffin, and mineral oil.
- the self-adhesive article may be made from a composition that consists essentially of 30- 100 weight % of a styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer. Any remainder is oil.
- PSA pressure sensitive self-adhesive
- the mechanism involved in the present invention may also be that involved in cling wraps, e.g., Saran Wrap.
- high molecular weight polymers such as polyvinylidene chloride (PVdC) or low density polyethylene (LDPE)
- PVdC polyvinylidene chloride
- LDPE low density polyethylene
- a low molecular weight polymer such as poly[ethylene-vinylacetate] (EVA) or polyisobutylene (PIB)
- EVA poly[ethylene-vinylacetate]
- PIB polyisobutylene
- the low molecular weight additive tends to form a separate phase in the high molecular weight host.
- the low molecular weight additive in one film seeks out and associates with the low molecular weight additive in the other film. This association is the "cling.”
- the self adhesive article of the present invention forms a bond when placed in close proximity with itself. It adheres to itself with a force sufficient for it to remain intact unless forcibly separated. It does not adhere well to any material other than itself or very smooth to high gloss surfaces, such as stainless steel and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
- PET polyethylene terephthalate
- the self-adhesive article may be used for any number of applications including, but not limited to, a wound wrap, sprain bandage, attaching ostomy devices to the body or the components to one another, attaching wound irrigation or drainage devices to the body or the components to one another, attaching condom catheters to the body; fastening clothing (e.g., a removable liner) or shoes (e.g., straps on shoes), and affixing items in the home, school, workplace, medical arena, and manufacturing environments to a surface, e.g., - hanging pictures on a wall.
- a wound wrap e.g., sprain bandage
- attaching ostomy devices to the body or the components to one another
- attaching wound irrigation or drainage devices to the body or the components to one another
- attaching condom catheters to the body
- fastening clothing e.g., a removable liner
- shoes e.g., straps on shoes
- the self adhesive may be clear, so it is aesthetically pleasing or discrete. It may also be flexible so that it may stretch as needed, and be conformable for bending at joints. It can be soft and cushioning. It may also be very thin to yield a narrower profile.
- the self adhesive of the present invention can be attached to another surface using an adhesive coating, sewing, heat sealing, ultrasonic bonding, or radiofrequency welding.
- composition of the present invention onto a smooth or glossy surface results in a self-adhesive article that exhibits advantageous properties that are not associated with other pressure sensitive adhesives.
- the self adhesive article is dry, stable in various environments, and cleanable.
- the self-adhesive article of the present invention also provides the benefits of both an adhesive and a fastener without the disadvantages typically associated with each. For example, unlike Velcro, it does not attract and adhere to lint and dust. It is easily separable with the appropriate force, and not dependent upon adhesives or tackifiers for its bonding properties.
- Fig. 1 is a graph depicting the tack of the article based upon surface
- Fig. 2 is a graph depicting the tack of the article over time
- Fig. 3. is a graph depicting the initial tack of the article with varying oil contents.
- Fig. 4 is a graph depicting the tack of the article with varying oil contents after 24 hours.
- the composition for the self-adhesive article consists essentially of styrene- isoprene-styrene copolymer and, optionally, an oil.
- the styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer may be a linear block polymer or a radial block polymer such as those sold under the tradename KRATON or VECTOR.
- the oil is selected from the group consisting of napthenic oils, aromatic oils, natural oils, paraffins, and mineral oil.
- the composition may contain 30- 100 weight percent of a styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer and, optionally, oil.
- the composition contains 35-65 weight percent of styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer and oil. Most preferably, the composition contains 50 weight percent of styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer and 50 weight percent of oil.
- the oil is selected from the group consisting of napthenic oils, aromatic oils, natural oils, paraffin, and mineral oil. Preferably, the oil is mineral oil. Most preferably the composition consists essentially of 50 weight percent of styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer and 50 weight percent of mineral oil.
- the self- adhesive article may be made from any composition that provides the defined characteristics. Extruding or casting of the composition onto a smooth or glossy surface results in the characteristics that define the self-adhesive article.
- the self-adhesive article is characterized by its ability to: 1) adhere to itself with a force sufficient for it to remain intact unless forcibly separated; 2) remain dry; and 3) be cleaned.
- the self-adhesive article remains dry unless water is added for cleaning; however, moisture is not necessary to form a bond.
- the self-adhesive article may be cleaned by wiping or any other standard means.
- the self adhesive is clear, flexible, and thin.
- the self adhesive article is formed from a composition that consists essentially of styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymer and, optionally, an oil selected from the group consisting of napthenic oils, aromatic oils, natural oils, paraffin, and mineral oil.
- the composition is extruded or cast onto a film or a surface that is sufficiently smooth or glossy to impart the smoothness or glossiness to the article.
- the smoother or glossier the surface of the article the stronger the bond.
- the article can have any depth or width sufficient to provide the appropriate fastening strength. For example, if used in an ostomy device, the article would be the size of such device. If used to hang a picture, the article might be one square inch.
- the terms "glossy” and “smooth” are used herein to describe physical appearance. For example, a material with a "glossy” surface has a luster or brightness so that it is shiny like glass or photograph paper. A material with a "smooth” surface is matte like paper.
- the self-adhesive article may be used for any number of applications including, but not limited to, a wound wrap, sprain bandage, attaching ostomy devices to the body or the components to one another, attaching wound irrigation or drainage devices to the body or the components to one another, attaching condom catheters to the body; fastening clothing (e.g., a removable liner) or shoes (e.g., straps on shoes), and affixing items in the home, school, workplace, medical arena, and manufacturing environments to a surface, e.g., hanging pictures on a wall.
- Peel adhesion is used to describe the fastening strength of the article. In the evaluations that were conducted, the article had a peel adhesion of 0.8 to 3.5 Newtons per inch/12 inches/minute). Peel adhesion of the article from itself is the average force to remove the article from itself at an angel of 90°.
- the peel adhesion of the self adhesive article of the present invention was measured by cutting a sample 25 mm wide and 100 mm long. 20-30 mm of the self adhesive was separated at one end to later be affixed to the upper clamps. The entire specimen was adhered to a stiff PET.
- the sample was allowed to fall gently onto the panel, then using only the weight of the roller, the adhesive was applied to the panel while minimizing the occurrence of air pockets under the sample and allowing only the weight of the roller to press the sample to the panel. 15 mm of the sample was applied to the upper clamp of the tensile tester (Chatillon® Tensile Tester). The articles were separated and the force required to separate them was recorded.
