Abstract

A wireless communication system (100) comprises a plurality of serving wireless communication units (122-132) supporting communication in a respective plurality of location areas. A first serving wireless communication unit (126) of the plurality of serving wireless communication unit (122-132) is arranged to generate a temporary identifier for use by a migrating/roaming wireless communication unit (116) when the first serving wireless communication unit (126) is temporarily disconnected from the remote management logic (146).

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received bythe International Bureau on 17JUNE 2008 (17.06.08)
1. A wireless communication system (100) comprising management logic (146) operably coupled to a plurality of serving wireless communication units (122-132) supporting communication with mobile stations in a respective plurality of location areas, wherein a first serving wireless communication unit (126) disconnected from the management logic (146) is operable to generate for use by a mobile station registering with the first serving unit (126) a temporary identifier, wherein the mobile station is operable to determine that the identifier is temporary and when roaming to an area served by a second serving wireless communication unit to send a registration request to the second serving unit.
2. A wireless communication system according to claim
1 wherein the first serving wireless communication unit (126) is operable to generate a temporary identifier that is only valid for use in the area served by the first serving unit (126).
3. A wireless communication system according to claim 2 wherein the mobile station is operable repeatedly to send a registration request each time it roams to a different service area until a registration request is accepted normally.
4. A wireless communication system according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the mobile station comprises a signal processing function (208) configured to determine that a temporary identifier was provided by a serving wireless communication unit and that the serving unit providing the temporary identifier is disconnected from the management logic (146).
5. A wireless communication system according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the mobile station is operable to re-transmit the initial registration request to the first serving wireless communication unit (126) in response to the first serving wireless communication unit re-connecting to the management logic (146) .
6. A wireless communication system according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the wireless communication system supports TETRA communication and the registration request includes a TETRA ITSI Attach message.
7. A wireless communication unit adapted for use as a mobile station in the wireless communication system according to any one of the preceding claims, the wireless communication unit comprising a transceiver operably coupled to a signal processing function (208), the transceiver being arranged to transmit a registration request to a serving wireless communication unit upon migrating/roaming into an area supported by the serving wireless communication unit and in response thereto to receive a temporary identifier, the signal processing function (208) being operable in response to receiving the temporary identifier to determine that the serving wireless communication unit is disconnected from management logic (146) and that the temporary identifier was generated by the serving wireless communication unit, and in response thereto the transceiver is adapted either to: re-transmit the registration request to a second serving wireless communication unit when roaming into a location area supported by the second serving wireless communication unit; or re-transmit the registration request to the first serving wireless communication unit (126) following determining that the first serving wireless communication unit has re-connected to management logic (146) .
8. A method for migrating/roaming in a wireless communication system (300/ 400) comprising management logic (146) operably coupled to a plurality of serving wireless communication units (122-132) supporting communication in a respective plurality of location areas, the method including the steps of: determining (325), by a first serving wireless communication unit (126) that it is disconnected from the management logic (146); receiving a registration request (305) from a migrating/roaming wireless communication unit (116); generating (335), by the first serving wireless communication unit (126) in response thereto, a temporary identifier for the migrating/roaming unit (116); transmitting by the first serving wireless communication unit (126) the temporary identifier to the migrating/roaming unit (116) in response thereto to enable the migrating/roaming wireless communication unit (116) to communicate in a location area supported by the first serving wireless communication unit (126); determining by the mobile station that the identifier is temporary; and, when roaming to an area served by a second serving wireless communication unit, the mobile station sending a further registration request to the second serving unit.
9. A method according to claim 8 including re-transmitting the registration request to the first serving wireless communication unit (126) following the first serving wireless communication unit re-connecting to the management logic (122-132).
