  • the locking means may comprise a first recess 20 on the perimeter of one of the holes 14 in one of the side portions 10 of the base 4 and a corresponding projection 22 on one of the hinge lugs 16 projecting from the back 6.
  • the projection 22 resiliently snaps into the corresponding first recess 20 when the base 4 and back 6 reach the deployed first configuration as shown in Fig . 4.
  • the perimeter of the hole 14 further includes a second recess 24, angularly spaced from the first recess 20 into which the projection 22 resiliently snaps when the base 4 and back 6 reach the second collapsed configuration as shown in Fig. 6.
  • the hinges 8 on both sides of the seat may include such a locking arrangement. Alternative locking arrangements, for example, one or more removable locking pins, may be employed in place of the arrangement described above.
  • the back 6 includes forwardly projecting wing portions 26 for laterally restraining the shoulders and/or head of a child sitting in the seat in its first configuration.
  • An upper end 28 of the back 6 is connected to a headrest 30 by means of a fabric hinge 32 which is configured to allow the headrest to pivot forwardly as shown by arrow A in Fig. 4 so that it is accommodated between the wing portions 26 as shown in Fig. 5.
  • a securing means comprising hook and loop fabric joining means 34 and 36.
  • a first piece of fabric 34 connected to a rear of the headrest 30 and bearing hooks is engagable with a complementary second piece of fabric 36 connected to a rear of the back and bearing loops .
  • Other means may be used for securing the headrest 30 in its deployed position.
  • Means may be provided to lock the headrest in each of its two positions. This means may be similar to the hinges 8 described above .
  • Each of the base 4, back 6 and headrest 30 comprises a relatively hard outer casing covered, at least on surfaces which are intended to come into contact with a child sitting in the seat, with a soft covering not designed to be readily separable from the casing.
  • padding may be provided by a fabric and/or foam upholstery layer which may be adapted to be readily removable for cleaning purposes.
  • the back 6 also includes a first outer part 38 and a second inner part 40 which is connected to a bottom edge of the outer part 38 by a hinge 42 which may be a fabric hinge.
  • the inner part 40 can be pivoted forwardly (see arrow B) away from the outer part 38 of the back 6 to provide access to belt retention means comprising four tongues 44 (three shown in Fig. 1) and a friction device 46.
  • Friction device 46 includes a friction enhanced surface 48 and a pivotable clamping number 50 (opened in the direction of arrow D) for clamping a vehicle's seat belt 52 firmly against the friction enhanced surface 48 to securely restrain the travel seat against lateral movement .
  • Two tonges 44 are provided on each side of the outer part 38 so as to accommodate a vehicle seat belt being led across the outer part 38 from either side.
  • the travel seat also includes its own built-in seat belt for restraining a child sitting in the seat .
  • the seat belt includes two adjustable length over-shoulder straps 54 each of which is secured to the outer part 38 of the back 6 and projects through a hole 56 therein over a height adjustment bar 58 which can be moved up and down to adjust the vertical position that the over-shoulder strap 54 is led through its respective hole 56.
  • the over-shoulder straps 54 extend forwardly through further holes 60 in the inner part 40 of the back 6.
  • a series of holes 60 are provided to accommodate the over-shoulder straps being routed - .through the holes 56 at various different heights. Movement of the inner part 40 along the over-shoulder straps 54, as shown by arrow B in Fig. 1, permits the inner and outer parts 40 and 38 of the back 6 to be moved away from each other.
  • Distal ends of the over-shoulder straps 54 are connected by a first buckle part 62 which is releasably engagable with a second buckle part 64 on a distal end of an adjustable length crutch strap 66 connected to a front of the base 4.
  • a selectably deployable support member 66 is pivotably connected to a front of the base 4 by means of a hinge pin 70 and can be folded flat against the base 4 as shown in Figs. 5 and 9 or deployed (see arrow E in Fig. 2) so as to project downwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 for example, to adjust the inclination of the base 4 which will in turn affect the angle of inclination of the back 6.
  • the travel seat ready for use in its first configuration, is shown in Fig. 2.
  • a child sits in the seat and is laterally restrained by the raised side portions 10 and the projecting wing portions 26.
  • the inner part 40 of the back will be pivoted forwardly, the vehicle seat belt 52 removed from the tongues 44 and friction device 46 and the inner part 40 moved back against the outer part 38 of the back.
  • the support member 68 will be pivoted upwardly against an underside of the base 4.
  • the headrest securing device 34, 36 will be released and the headrest 30 pivoted forwardly as shown by arrow A in Fig. 4 so that it becomes accommodated between the projecting wing portions 26 as shown in Fig. 5.
  • the back .6 will then be pivoted about the hinges 8, as shown by arrow C in Fig. 5, so that a distal end 72 of the base is brought into close proximity with a distal end 74 of the headrest 30 and the base 4 lies substantially up against the back 6 at which point the projections 22 of the hinges 8 snap into the second recesses 24.
  • the height H of the back 6 to lower sides of the projecting wing portions 26 is substantially the same as the length L of the base 4.
  • an outer surface of what constitutes the back 6 in the first configuration is provided with a contoured and/or padded seating surface 76.
  • a carrying handle 78 is hingably connected to the back 6. This handle will be folded into a complementary recess 80 when not being used for carrying the seat .
  • the back 6, base 4 and also possibly the headrest 30 may be moulded and may have strengthening ribs 82 formed in their casings to enhance the strength of these parts. Appropriate padding will be provided on the seating surface 76 to ensure that it constitutes a comfortable surface to sit on .
  • the overall dimensions of the travel seat are approximately 380mm wide, 450mm high (in first opened up configuration) and 125mm deep (when in its second collapsed configuration) .
  • the travel seat described overcomes the disadvantages of needing two different travel seats for accommodating different stages of a child's development and furthermore provides a travel seat which is easy to install and change from one configuration to another.
  • the invention also provides a travel seat, which can-,,be collapsed into a very compact form for storage. Variations of the design, which fall within the scope of the claims, will be apparent to skilled persons in the art . Parts List

Abstract

La présente invention concerne un siège auto pour enfant comprenant une base (4) et un dossier (6) reliés par des charnières qui permettent de replier le dossier (6) entre des parties latérales surélevées (10) de la base (4). Un appuie-tête (30) est relié pivotant (32) à une extrémité supérieure du dossier (6) de manière qu'il peut être replié entre des parties ailes en saillie (26) du dossier, avec une extrémité distale (74) de l'appuie-tête (30) étroitement adjacente à une extrémité distale (72) de la base (4). Une partie intérieure (40) du dossier (6) peut pivoter vers l'avant afin de faciliter l'introduction d'une ceinture de sécurité (52) dans des moyens de retenue (44, 46). Une surface extérieure du siège à l'état replié comprend une surface d'assise (76) qui permet de transformer le siège en un réhausseur destiné à un enfant plus âgé.
