Abstract

A powdery phsphor represented by one of the general formulae MS:R and MS:R,X, characterized in that M is an element selected from among zinc (Zn), strontium (Sr), calcium (Ca), barium (Ba), Magnesium (Mg) and cadmium (Cd), R is an element selected from among copper (Cu), silver (Ag), gold (Au) and manganese (Mg), X is an element selected from among chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) and iodine (I), and it exhibits an angle of repose of 50˚ or more. The powdery phosphor has been satisfactorily freed of a sulfide which is located on the surface of the phosphor to absorb an emitted light, resulting in the decrease in luminous brightness, and/or to cause dielectric discharge breakdown, and accordingly is free from the occurrence of dielectric discharge breakdown and exhibits high brightness. Further, the powdery phosphor has been satisfactorily freed of other impurities, is less susceptible to deterioration, and has improved life characteristics.
