Abstract

A medication dispensing apparatus (20) in which a dose is set by pulling out an actuator (40), and then dispensed by pushing in that actuator (40). In one form, the apparatus is an injector pen with a housing (22) that holds a medicine-filled cartridge (28). A drive member (80) that engages a plunger (32) of the cartridge (28) axially extends within the housing (22). An anti-backup member (90) operably engages the drive member (80) to permit forward movement and prevent rearward movement of the drive member (80) within the housing (22). An actuator (40) axially movable into and out of the housing (22) includes a manually graspable grip portion (42). When the actuator (40) is moved from a forward position to a rearward position by pulling on the grip portion (42), a clutch element (65) moves rearward relative to the drive member (80) held by the anti-backup member (90). When the actuator (40) is subsequently moved from the rearward position to the forward position, the clutch element (65) is moved forward, and due to a catch portion (71) of the clutch element (65) fitting within an indentation (86) of the drive member (80), the drive member (80) is also moved forward to advance the plunger (32) to force medicine from the cartridge (28).
