SIDE CLICK TYPE COMPOSITE WRITING INSTRUMENT
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a composite writing instrument which accommodates a plurality of writing implements such as a ball-point pen, a mechanical pencil and the like in a single casing, and more particularly, the present invention relates to a side click type composite writing instrument which allows a user to click an end of a pressing piece located on a side wall of a casing while grasping the composite writing instrument, thereby to selectively project a ball-point pen unit or a mechanical pencil unit out of the casing.
Description of the Related Art
FIGs . la and lb shows an example of a conventional composite writing instrument. As can be seen from the drawings, the conventional composite writing instrument 40 includes a lower case 41, an upper case 42 having coupling means 47 which couples the lower case 41 and the upper case 42, a mechanical pencil unit 45 and a ball-point pen unit 46 which are accommodated in an assembly of the lower case 41 and the upper case 42, and a clip 43 and a cap 44 which are
fitted to an upper end of the upper case 42.
In the conventional composite writing instrument 40, as shown in FIG. lb, the coupling means 47 couples the lower case 41 and the upper case 42 in a manner such that the upper case 42 can be rotated around the lower case 41 to selectively project the mechanical pencil unit 45 or the ball-point pen unit 46 out of a lower end of the lower case 41.
On upper ends of the mechanical pencil unit 45 and ball-point pen unit 46, slide members 49 and 48 are respectively provided. An extended portion 49a of the slide member 49 which corresponds to the mechanical pencil unit 45 is made shorter than an extended portion 48a of the slide member 48 which corresponds to the ball-point pen 46. Due to this, in the case that the mechanical pencil unit 45 is to be used, by pressing downwards the upper case 42 in a lengthwise direction thereof, a pencil lead can be fed through a lower end of the mechanical pencil unit 45.
Since the conventional composite writing instrument 40 is configured in a manner such that either the mechanical pencil unit 45 or the ball-point pen unit 46 can be projected out of the lower end of the lower case 41 by rotating the upper case 42 in one direction or the other direction relative to the lower case 41, when it is necessary to use the other of the mechanical pencil unit 45
or the ball-point pen unit 46, a writing grip of the user's hand must be changed to rotate the upper case 42 in one or the other direction and thereafter, the user must again grasp the composite writing instrument with the writing grip. As a consequence, inconvenience is caused upon alternately using the mechanical pencil unit 45 and the ball-point pen unit 46, and bothersomeness is induced when quick writing is required.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Reference will now be made in greater detail to a preferred embodiment of the invention, an example of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numerals will be used throughout the drawings and the description to refer to the same or like parts. As shown in the drawings, a side click type composite writing instrument 30 according to the present invention includes a ball-point pen unit 5, a mechanical pencil unit 6, a casing 1, a supporting member 11, a pair of springs 12, a cap 2, a first shifting body 7, a second shifting body 8, and a pressing piece 4.
The ball-point pen unit 5 has at least one first annular projection 5a which is formed on a circumferential outer surface of and adjacent to a middle portion of the ball-point pen unit 5 and extends outward in a radial direction. The mechanical pencil unit 6 has at least one second annular projection 6a which is formed on a circumferential outer surface of and adjacent to a middle portion of the mechanical pencil unit 6 in such a way as to be positioned at a different height from the first annular projection 5a of the ball-point pen unit 5 and extends
outward in the radial direction. The casing 1 is formed with a guide rail 10 and is defined with a slot 9. The guide rail 10 functions to guide movement of the first and second shifting bodies 7 and 8. The slot 9 extends in a lengthwise direction of the casing 1 so that inclined side surfaces of the first and second shifting bodies 7 and 8 face the slot 9. The supporting member 11 is fitted into an upper end of the casing 1 in such a way as to allow upper ends of the ball-point pen unit 5 and mechanical pencil unit 6 to pass therethrough. The pair of springs 12 are placed around the upper ends of the ball-point pen unit 5 and mechanical pencil unit 6, respectively, which pass through the supporting member 11. Each spring 12 has one end which is supported by the supporting member 11 and the other end which is seated against a fastening member 13 interference- fitted around each unit. The cap 2 is coupled to the upper end of the casing 1 to cover an upper part of the casing 1.
The first shifting body 7 has a first clamping arm 7a, a first inclined side surface 7c, a first notched engaging surface 7b and a first groove 7d. The first clamping arm 7a protrudes from a surface of the first shifting body 7 to define a curved tweezer-shaped configuration and clamps the ball-point pen unit 5. The first inclined side surface 7c which defines a V-shaped depression is formed to slidingly guide an upper end of the
pressing piece 4 which upper end has a corresponding V- shaped outline. The upper end of the pressing piece 4 can be engaged with the first notched engaging surface 7b to be fixed. The first groove 7d is associated with the guide rail 10.
The second shifting body 8 has a second clamping arm 8a, a second inclined side surface 8c, a second notched engaging surface 8b, concaved portions 8d and a second groove 8e. The second clamping arm 8a protrudes from a surface of the second shifting body 8 to define a curved tweezer-shaped configuration and clamps the mechanical pencil unit 6. The second inclined side surface 8c which has a V-shaped outline is formed to slidingly guide a lower end of the pressing piece 4 which lower end defines a corresponding V-shaped depression. The second notched engaging surface 8b is formed at a middle portion of the second inclined side surface 8c. The lower end of the pressing piece 4 can be engaged with the second notched engaging surface 8b to be fixed. The concaved portions 8d are respectively formed on front and rear surfaces of the second shifting body 8 in a manner such that the concaved portions 8d can partially accommodate one of the ball-point pen unit 5 and the mechanical pencil unit 6 when the other of them is projected out of a lower end of the casing 1. The second groove 8e is associated with the guide rail 10.
The pressing piece 4 is inserted through the slot 9 which is defined in the casing 1. The pressing piece 4 possesses the upper end which has a V-shaped outline, and the lower end which defines the V-shaped depression. The upper and lower ends of the pressing piece 4 respectively face the first and second inclined side surfaces 7c and 8c of the first and second shifting bodies 7 and 8, respectively. The pressing piece 4 has its own predetermined elasticity. While it was described in the present embodiment that the pressing piece 4 possesses the upper end having the V- shaped outline and the lower end defining the V-shaped depression, a person skilled in the art will readily recognize that both of the upper and lower ends can have a V-shaped outline or a V-shaped depression.
Hereinafter, operations of the side click type composite writing instrument 30 according to the present invention, constructed as mentioned above, will be described in detail. First, in a state wherein a user grasps the side click type composite writing instrument 30 according to the present invention, if the upper end of the pressing piece 4 is pressed using the thumb or the index finger, the upper end of the pressing piece 4 is slided downwards along the first inclined side surface 7c as shown in FIGs . 4a and 4b,
of the first shifting body 7 which defines the V-shaped depression, and then, engaged with the first notched engaging surface 7b to be fixed. By this, the first clamping arm 7a which clamps the ball-point pen unit 5 pushes downwards the first annular projection 5a of the ball-point pen unit 5 to project the ball-point pen unit 5 out of the lower end of the casing 1. The spring 12 which is placed around the upper end of the ball-point pen unit 5 is elastically compressed between the supporting member 11 and the fastening member 13. In this way, the user can conveniently use the ball-point pen unit 5 by simply clicking the pressing piece 4 which is inserted through the slot 9 defined in the casing 1.
Thereafter, if the user lightly presses the lower end of the pressing piece 4, the upper end of the pressing piece 4 which is held engaged with the first notched engaging surface 7b is disengaged from the first notched engaging surface 7b to be returned to its original position. At this time, the return of the upper end of the pressing piece 4 is facilitated by its own elasticity, by force acting on the upper end of the pressing piece 4 by the first annular projection 5a of the ball-point pen unit 5 which is clamped by the first clamping arm 7a of the first shifting body 7, and by elastic returning force of the spring 12 placed around the upper end of the ball-point pen unit 5.
Upward and downward movement of the first shifting body 7 is smoothly effected by engagement of the guide rail 10 formed on an inner surface of the casing 1 into the first groove 7d defined on the other side surface of the first shifting body 7 and by engagement of the upper end having the V-shaped outline, of the pressing piece 4, with the first inclined side surface 7c defining the V-shaped depression, of the first, shifting body 7.
Next, as shown in FIG. 5, in a state wherein the user grasps the side click type composite writing instrument 30 according to the present invention, if the lower end of the pressing piece 4 is pressed using the thumb or the index finger, the lower end of the pressing piece 4 is slided downwards along an upper half of the second inclined side surface 8c of the second shifting body 8 which defines the V-shaped outline, and then, engaged with the second notched engaging surface 8b to be fixed (as illustrated by the pressing piece represented by reference numeral 4'). At this time, the second clamping arm 8a of the second shifting body 8 which clamps the mechanical pencil unit 6 pushes the second annular projection 6a of the mechanical pencil unit 6 downwards as shown by an arrow D, whereby a lower end of the mechanical pencil unit 6 is moved downwards to project out of the lower end of the casing 1. The spring 12 which is placed around the upper end of the mechanical pencil unit 6
is elastically compressed between the supporting member 11 and the fastening member 13. In this way, the user can conveniently use the mechanical pencil unit 6 by simply clicking the pressing piece 4 which is inserted through the slot 9 defined in the casing 1.
By further pressing inward the lower end of the pressing piece 4, a pencil lead of the mechanical pencil unit 6 can be fed through the lower end of the mechanical pencil unit 6. Concretely speaking, if the user further presses inward the lower end of the pressing piece 4, the lower end of the pressing piece 4 which is held in fixed engagement with the second notched engaging surface 8b, is slided downwards along a lower half of the second inclined side surface 8c of the second shifting body 8. Due to this, the second shifting body 8 pushes downwards the second annular projection 6a of the mechanical pencil unit 6 by the medium of the second clamping arm 8a to further move the mechanical pencil unit 6 downward. At this time, because the mechanical pencil unit 6 is brought at its lower end into contact with the casing 1, owing to the conventional structure of the mechanical pencil unit 6, as a first sleeve portion 6b of the mechanical pencil unit 6 is moved through a second sleeve portion 6c, the pencil lead which is held captured by the first sleeve portion 6b is fed through the lower end of the mechanical pencil unit 6. In this way, by
further pressing once the pressing piece 4 which is inserted through the slot 9 defined in the casing 1, the user can conveniently use the mechanical pencil unit 6 by projecting the pencil lead through the lower end of the mechanical pencil unit 6.
Then, if the user lightly presses the upper end of the pressing piece 4, the lower end of the pressing piece 4 which is held in fixed engagement with the second notched engaging surface 8b, is disengaged therefrom to be returned to its original position. At this time, the return of the lower end of the pressing piece 4 is facilitated by its own elasticity, by force acting on the lower end of the pressing piece 4 by the second annular projection 6a of the mechanical pencil unit 6 which is clamped by the second clamping arm 8a of the second shifting body 8, and by elastic returning force of the spring 12 placed around the upper end of the mechanical pencil unit 6.
It is preferred that the second shifting body 8 which is inserted into the side click type composite writing instrument 30 according to the present invention has a contour as shown in FIG. 4d.
By this contour, the first and second shifting bodies 7 and 8 can be smoothly moved upwards and downwards while being engaged with the guide rail 10 and the upper and lower ends of the pressing piece 4 in the casing 1.
In place of the pressing piece 4 having a single structure, the side click type composite writing instrument 30 according to the present invention can have a pressing piece 14 as shown in FIG. 6. In this case, as can be readily seen from FIG. 6, the pressing piece 14 comprises a first segment 14a, a second segment 14c and a coupling member 14b which couples the first and second segments 14a and 14c. In the pressing piece 14, ends of the first and second segments 14a' and 14b' are overlapped and coupled with each other by the coupling member 14b such as a pin, a rivet, a screw and the like.
While in the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the first shifting body 7 which is coupled with the ball-point pen unit 5 is located above and the second shifting body 8 which is coupled with the mechanical pencil unit 6 is located below when viewed from the drawings, it is to be readily understood that the present invention is not limited to this location, and therefore, the first shifting body 7 which is coupled with the ball-point pen unit 5 can be located below.
Also, while in the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the ball-point pen unit is employed as a first writing implement and the mechanical pencil unit is employed as a second writing implement, it is to be readily comprehended that the present invention is not limited to
this employment. Consequently, ball-point pen units having different colors can be employed as the first and second writing implements. At this time, the second shifting body is shaped in a manner similar to the first shifting body, except that the second shifting body is defined with concaved portions .
As a result, the side click type composite writing instrument according to the present invention provides advantages in that, since a pressing piece serving as a 'push button is located on a side wall of the composite writing instrument, the writing grip of the user does not need to be changed upon implementing a manipulation to selectively project a mechanical pencil unit or a ball-point pen unit out of a casing. Consequently, in comparison with the conventional composite writing instrument, convenience is rendered when the user alternately uses the mechanical pencil unit and the ball-point pen unit. Also, upon using the mechanical pencil unit, because it is possible to feed a pencil lead through a lower end of the mechanical pencil unit while grasping the composite writing instrument, the use of the mechanical pencil unit is significantly eased.
In the drawings and specification, there have been disclosed typical preferred embodiments of the invention and, although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of
limitation, the scope of the invention set forth in the following claims.
