Definitions
- This invention relates to a device for use in male hygiene, more particularly to a device which confines a stream of urine to a lavatory bowel or other urine receiving means, such as a urinal, hereinafter also referred to collectively as a lavatory bowl.
- a problem frequently encountered by males is ensuring that a stream of urine reaches the lavatory bowl when a male urinates in an upright position. This is particularly a problem for young boys. A consequence of this is that urine lands on surfaces such as flooring leading to staining and bad odours, especially if the surface is not a washable surface such as tiles. Also if the surround of the lavatory bowl is wooden for example permanent damage can be done to the wood because of the nature and composition of urine.
- JP 6178788A2 discloses a throw-away absorptive article comprising a layered structure which is disposed about the penis in use and which is provided with adjustable means so that the penis is properly positioned to ensure maximum absorption of urine.
- the article is provided with a pair of flap members fitted to a liquid permeable surface sheet in such a manner as to extend in the longitudinal direction of the article, and setting the space between the base ends of the flap members and the length thereof from the base end to the free end in such a manner as to hold the penis between the flap members.
- JP 11076284A2 also discloses a urine-absorbing pad which can be easily and accurately fitted about the penis so that positional slip is minimised.
- US 4453938 discloses an incontinence guard for male use which comprises a sheath with an insertion opening along one edge and edge portions beside the opening disposed such that, when the guard is in place, the edge portions are directed obliquely upwards one on each side of the penis root to grip the sides of the penis and improve retention of the guard in position.
- US 4187851 discloses a sheath arrangement for a male urinal device, for use as an incontinence device, having a urinal sheath of flexible material, and designed for application to a penis for covering a substantial portion thereof lengthwise of the same and having a lower portion for connection to a urine receptacle, and a liner pad of resilient, compressible, deformable, waterproof material in the form of a strip of such material having a width sufficiently narrow to allow the strip to be wound spirally to extend over a portion of the penis beneath the sheath much greater in length than the width of the strip.
- a device is required for male persons, especially male children, to overcome the problem of missing, and in particular overshooting, the lavatory bowl.
- the invention provides a disposable male hygiene device, comprising a longitudinal element which is adapted, in use, to surround the body of a penis in the flaccid state during urination by a male person in the upright position and to extend beyond the extremity of the penis a given distance so as to direct a stream of urine exiting from the device through a trajectory which ensures that the urine is received within a urine receiving means.
- the device according to the invention overcomes the problems set out above by essentially deflecting the stream of urine downwardly into the urine receiving means.
- the device can be assembled from a blank at the time of use by overlapping the longitudinal edges of the blank along the body of the penis to the extent necessary to position the penis therebetween.
- the device is of a generally conical shape in use, the apex of the cone being positioned above the extremity of the penis, such as the shape of a truncated cone.
- the longitudinal axis of the device is curved such that the stream of urine exiting the device follows a trajectory imparted by the urine.
- the device in use can be of any shape which can surround the body of the penis in use and which confines the trajectory taken by a stream of urine so that it is directed and confined within the urine receiving means, most usually a lavatory bowl.
- the device is composed of a material which can be deformed to conform with the surface of the penis.
- the device in position will present generally as a sheath of flexible material which will cover a substantial portion of the body of the penis lengthwise of the same.
- the device is sized to fit over the penis of a wearer by virtue of the overlapping edges which enable the device to be effectively positioned irrespective of the diameter of the penis.
- a range of sizes can be provided so as to allow for differences in size between young males and adult males.
- the device will typically be sufficiently deformable to ensure liquid tight engagement of the overlapping portions of the longitudinal edges of the device in use.
- the device according to the invention can be compressible and deformable so that it will conform with the surface of the penis in use.
- the contacting surfaces of the longitudinal edges of the device can be provided with a layer of a contact/ pressure sensitive adhesive or pressure-sensitive tape fasteners so that the device can be secured about the penis in use.
- the device has a laminated structure.
- the device comprises a skin-contacting layer composed of a urine absorbing material and an outer layer of a water-repellent material.
- the urine absorbing material can be any suitable moisture absorbent material such as cellular wadding, creped tissue wadding or air laid cellulosic fibres.
- the urine absorbing material can to advantage be enveloped in non- woven fabric known er se.
- the layer of water repellent material can be a backsheet of a liquid impermeable material such as a polyolefin sheet film material, such as polyethylene and polypropylene films.
- the device being disposable is biodegradable, sanitary and environmentally safe.
- the layer of urine absorbing material can be separated from the outer layer following use for disposal by flushing.
- the skin-contacting layer is a removable inner sheet of material disposed of by flushing and the remainder of the device is made of a biodegradable material that is disposed of in a receptacle for refuse located in a bathroom and thereafter in a conventional landfill following refuse collection.
- the skin-contacting layer is provided with a removal means, for example, a tag, attached thereto for easy removal of said layer.
- the device is generally composed of a material which has a rigidity which enables the device to adopt the required shape during use.
- the device is impregnated with an antiseptic agent.
- the antiseptic agent can be any antiseptic agent which is used to impregnate hygienic wipes.
- the device according to the invention has the added advantage that the user will automatically cleanse his hands while using the device, which he might otherwise do.
- the device is stackable and/or nestable with other like devices, so that they can be dispensed from a holder.
- Such a holder can be fixed to, or mounted on, a surface in a bathroom adjacent the lavatory or in a public place adjacent a urinal. It will be appreciated that the device can be available for use in the home, in hotels and also in public lavatories.
- the device can be in the form of blanks which can be assembled at the time of use and which can be dispensed from a box provided with a longitudinal slip in the manner adopted for boxes of facial tissues.
- Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of a disposable male hygiene device according to the invention in the form of a blank prior to being assembled for use;
- Fig. 2 is a schematic representation of the blank of Fig. 1 assembled and ready to use;
- Fig. 3 is a schematic representation of a dispensing device for a disposable male hygiene device in accordance with the invention
- Fig. 4 is a schematic representation of a second embodiment of a disposable male hygiene device according to the invention.
- a blank of a compressible and deformable material which can be assembled into a disposable male hygiene device 11 (depicted in Fig. 2) according to the invention.
- the blank 10 is in the shape of a truncated cone having a base 12 and an apex 13 and longitudinal edges 14 and 15 which can be overlapped .by a user about the penis when required for use.
- the edge 14 is provided with a strip of pressure-sensitive adhesive 16 on a surface 17 which can be used to secure the device 11 lengthwise along the penis when the adhesive strip 16 contacts the underside of the device along edge 15.
- the device 11 has a laminated structure with the surface 17 being the surface of a water repellent layer which is laminated to a skin-contacting layer of moisture absorbent material (not shown).
- Fig. 2 shows a device 11 in the assembled form.
- the device illustrated in Fig. 2 can also represent a device in a ready-to-use form obtained from a dispenser 20 as shown in Fig. 3.
- the dispenser 20 has a box-like body 21 which contains a supply of devices 11 in a stackable and nestable array.
- the dispenser 20 is provided with a dispensing funnel 22 from which the devices 11 are dispensed through a tip 23 by gripping on apex portion 13 of a device and extracting it by pulling from said tip 23.
- the dispenser 20 can be mounted to a surface such as a wall surface adjacent a lavatory.
- the dispenser 20 is of a conventional design for dispensing items such as device 11 and is suitably refillable with devices 11 through a filling inlet 24.
- a second embodiment of a disposable male hygiene device is in the form of a generally cone-shaped hollow longitudinal element 31 with an opening 32 at one end, adapted to receive a penis in the flaccid state, and an opening 33 at the other end through which a stream of urine exits during urination.
- the longitudinal axis of the device 30 curves towards the opening 33. The curve has the effect of directing the stream of urine exiting from the opening 33 of the device 30 through a trajectory imparted by the curve which ensures that the urine is received within a urine receiving means.
