Abstract

A system (100) and method are disclosed for automatically detecting DSL service on multiple telephone lines. A DSL modem (124) is coupled to multiple telephone lines (106 and 108) and periodically probes the lines until identifying the line having DSL service. In one embodiment, the DSL modem includes relays to periodically switch connection between the lines until the line having DSL service is identified. The DSL modem probes each of the lines for DSL service by transmitting activation tones over each of the lines and waiting for a response from the DSL service.
