Abstract

A method for automated mass production of tissue culture plantlets (P1A, P1B), wherein disease-free plantlets (P1A, P1B) grown in vitro are mechanically sectioned into nodal fragments (NF1'-5') by means of a tissue sectioning apparatus (40, 42, 44a-d) having at least one blade (S1-S3). The at least one blade (S1-S3) is adapted for performing repetitive motion and for repeatedly sectioning plant tissue. A plurality of plantlets (P1A, P1B) may be contacted with the at least one blade (S1-S3) while the plurality of plantlets (P1A, P1B) are attached to a culture medium (16) in a culture container (10). Preferably, the sectioning apparatus (40, 42, 44a-d) includes a plurality of blades (S1-S3) substantially parallel to each other, wherein the spacing between the plurality of blades (S1-S3) is adjustable. Nodal fragments (NF1'-5') may in turn be cultured in vitro to provide a further plurality of plantlets (P1A, P1B). After an appropriate number of disease-free plantlets (P1A, P1B) have been obtained, nodal fragments (NF1'-5') excised therefrom may be grown in a suitable medium (16) under non-aseptic conditions to provide a plurality of plantlets (P1A, P1B) which are substantially disease-free and suitable for transplanting to the field for the production of potato minitubers.
