Abstract

A portable communication device (10) has an electronic circuit board (20) arranged inside a housing (12), and a keypad (30), the individual keys (32) of which are arranged, when depressed, to collapse a respective tactile dome (52) on a domefoil (50) interposed between the keypad and the circuit board, so as to establish electric contact with a respective contact point (22) on the circuit board. The communication device has means for protecting the circuit board from electrostatic discharge (ESD). The domefoil (50) is formed as a non-conductive sheet providing an air-tight and/or electrostatic seal between the keypad (30) and the circuit board (20), whereby the domefoil functions as said ESD-protective means.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 18 August 1998 (18.08.98); original claims 1-10 replaced by amended claims 1-8 (2 pages)]
1. A portable communication device (10), comprising an electronic circuit board (20) arranged inside a housing (12) , and a keypad (30) , the individual keys (32) of which are arranged, when depressed, to collapse a respective tactile dome (52) on a domefoil (50) interposed between the keypad and the circuit board, so as to establish electric contact with a respective contact point (22) on the circuit board, said communication device being provided with means for protecting the circuit board from electrostatic discharge (ESD) , c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that said domefoil (50) is formed as a non-conductive sheet providing an air-tight and/or electrostatic seal between the keypad (30) and the circuit board (20) , said domefoil thereby functioning as said ESD-protective means, and in that an electrically conductive layer is embedded in the domefoil (50) and is connected to ground means, said layer thereby preventing electromagnetic interference between the device and its surroundings .

A communication device according to claim 1, wherein said circuit board is provided with means (24) for illuminating the keys (32) in the keypad (30) and said domefoil (50) is provided with additional domes (54) covering the illuminating means (24), thereby protecting the circuit board (20) from ESD.
3. A communication device according to claim 2, wherein said additional domes (54) are made transparent to the light emitted from the illuminating means (24) .
4. A communication device according to claim 2, wherein said additional domes (54) are made white or 12
glossy, so as to enhance the illumination of the keys (32) in the keypad (30) .
5. A communication device according to claim 2, wherein said additional domes (54) are printed with a screen or dot pattern.
6. A communication device according to any preceding claim, wherein the domefoil (50) is provided with air chan- nels for dissipating heat generated by the circuit board (20) or components thereon.
7. A communication device according to any preceding claim, wherein the device is a radio telephone, preferably a cellular telephone.
8. A method of protecting a keypad-operated device (10) from electrostatic discharge between a keypad (30) and an electronic circuit board (20) inside the device, c h a r a c t e r i z e d by providing the device (10) with a domefoil (50), comprising a set of tactile domes (52) and at least the entire front surface of which being made from an electrically isolating material, as an air-tight and/or electro- static seal between the keypad (30) and the circuit board (20) , and by providing the interior of the domefoil (50) with an electrically conductive and grounded layer, said layer acting as an electromagnetic shield between the circuit board (20) and electronic equipment external to the device (10) .
