Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a device for inhibiting a flipper from being dislodged from the foot of a person during use.
  • the invention finds application in any sport where flippers are used.
  • Flippers are commonly used in sports such as snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing.
  • a flipper can be dislodged from the foot of a person by turbulence such as is commonly experienced by bodyboard and neeboard riders in surf. Dislodgment can result in the flipper being lost, or at the very least, cause inconvenience to the person as he or she must refit the flipper to continue the sporting activity. This is particularly disadvantageous in surf wherein the person may be caught by an incoming wave while refitting the flipper.
  • a flipper may rub against a person's foot during use and cause abrasion. Besides causing discomfort the resulting abrasion may ultimately progress to become a sea ulcer thereby necessitating the person to refrain from participating in their sport until the sea ulcer has healed. While it is possible to use a bootie to substantially inhibit the abrasion from occurring, the bootie still may not inhibit the flipper from moving about on a person's foot or from being dislodged, particularly if the flipper is an ill-fitting one.
  • a device for attaching a flipper to the ankle of a person is known. The device comprises an ankle strap and a leash that receives the ankle strap of the flipper in use.
  • the leash passes through an opening in webbing adapted to be wrapped around the strap of the flipper to hold the leash in position.
  • the device does not maintain the flipper on the person's foot during use and the engagement of the leash with the strap of the flipper only serves to prevent the flipper from being lost if the flipper is dislodged from the foot.
  • a device for maintaining a flipper on the foot of a person wherein the flipper is of the type having a strap which passes behind the person's heel when the foot is received in the flipper, and the device comprises: fastening means adapted to fasten the device to the strap of the flipper; and securing means adapted to secure the device to the ankle of the person and being connected to the fastening means; and wherein the securing means is able to be wrapped around the ankle to thereby inhibit movement of the strap of the flipper downwardly over the heel and so maintain the flipper on the foot, when the device is fastened to the strap of the flipper by the fastening means.
  • the securing means may be connected to the fastening means by way of flexible sheet material.
  • the fastening means will be a flap able to be folded over the strap and be secured to the sheet material.
  • the flap is integrally formed with the sheet material.
  • the securing means may be secured to the sheet material such that the sheet material is caused to be wrapped around the ankle of the person with the securing means as the device is being secured to the ankle.
  • the sheet material may also provide a tongue that protrudes into the flipper and covers at least a part of the instep of the foot, in use.
  • the sheet material will usually be elastically deformable.
  • the securing means may comprise at least one ankle strap having opposite end regions that converge from opposite ends of the sheet material to a middle region of the sheet material that is positioned behind the heel when the device is secured to the ankle of the person.
  • the securing means will usually be formed from a substantially non-stretchable material.
  • an embodiment may inhibit the flipper from being dislodged from the foot of the person when in use. It is another advantage that an embodiment may be provided which may reduce movement of the flipper on the foot and thereby inhibit abrasion to the ankle and heel from occurring.
  • an embodiment may provide padding between the flipper and the person's foot and so provide increased comfort to the user.
  • Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention

  • Figure 3 is a perspective view of the embodiment of Figure 1 attached to a flipper;
  • Figure 4 is a plan view of another embodiment of the invention.
  • FIG. 1 An embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 1 as comprising a strip of sheet material consisting of elastically deformable neoprene webbing 1 able to be wrapped around the ankle of a person and having a tongue portion 2 for covering the instep of the person's foot, in use.
  • Fastening means in the form of a flap 3 provided with loop tape 4 is integrally formed with webbing 1.
  • flap 3 is wrapped around the strap 5 of flipper 6 (see Figure 3) so that loop tape 4 engages with hook tape 7 to thereby attach the device to the flipper.
  • Hook tape 7 is only secured to webbing 1 along lower edge 8 by stitching 9 to enable strap 5 of flipper 6 to be located behind hook tape 7 when the device is being attached to the flipper.
  • flap 3 may be secured to webbing l using press studs or any other suitable means.
  • the device further comprises securing means in the form of a substantially non-stretchable woven ankle strap for securing the device to the ankle of the person.
  • securing means in the form of a substantially non-stretchable woven ankle strap for securing the device to the ankle of the person.
  • opposite end regions 10 and 11 of ankle strap 12 converge from opposite sides or ends 13 of the webbing at an angle ⁇ with respect to each other to a point 14 at the lower periphery of middle region 15 of webbing 1.
  • a hole 16 is formed through middle region 15 of webbing 1 to allow water to escape from the device.
  • End 10 of ankle strap 12 is provided with a buckle 17 through which opposite end 11 of the ankle strap can be looped and drawn back on itself to wrap webbing 1 round the person's ankle.
  • end 11 is provided with hook and loop tape 18 and 19 located so as to be engageable with each other.
  • buckle 17 is not present and loop tape 18 is simply sandwiched between hook tape located on end 10 of ankle strap 12 when wrapped around the ankle.
  • other fastening systems may be used to fasten ends 10 and 11 of ankle strap 12 together.
  • webbing 1 is formed to completely surround the person's ankle when the device is fastened to the ankle by band 12. More specifically, middle region 15 of webbing 1 is positioned behind the heel of the person's foot in use while sides 13 of the webbing cover opposite sides of the ankle.
  • tongue portion 2 of webbing l is drawn around so as to cover the instep of the foot.
  • tongue portion 2 is inserted between the instep of the foot and top side 20 of flipper 6 as shown in phantom outline in Figure 3.
  • an embodiment may be provided wherein tongue portion 2 is not present.
  • webbing 1 is attached to strap 5 of flipper 6 through flap 3, the flipper strap is pulled against the heel of the person's foot as sides 13 of webbing 1 are drawn tightly around the opposite sides of the ankle when the device is being secured to the ankle by ankle strap 12.
  • ankle strap 12 converges to point 14 of webbing 1 located behind the heel of the person, strap 5 is drawn upwardly by the ankle strap. Since ankle strap 12 is substantially non-stretchable, movement of the flipper strap 5 downwardly over the heel is prevented thereby inhibiting the flipper from being able to be dislodged from the person's foot.
  • Webbing l also provides padding and so substantially prevents strap 5 of the flipper from rubbing directly against the person's heel thereby reducing the possibility of abrasion to the heel. Further protection is provided to the ankle and instep of the foot by tongue portion 2 of webbing 1 when present.
  • a device embodied by the invention without a tongue portion 2 is illustrated in Figure 4. If desired, a device embodied by the invention may be provided with cover means in the form of a cover flap
  • a flipper may be provided having securing means able to be secured around the ankle of a person as described above.
  • the securing means may be permanently connected to, or integrally formed with, a heel portion of the flipper.
  • the heel portion may be strap 5 or a heel cup of the flipper if the flipper is of the type having an integrally formed moulded heel portion for receiving substantially the entire heel of the person.
  • fastening means may not be provided.
