Definitions
- This invention relates to a coupling device for a number of fluidum hoses between a traction vehicle and a trailer.
- the coupling and uncoupling of semi-trailers may be frequent and it is desirable that the various hydraulic and pneumatic hoses simply and quickly can be coupled and uncoupled.
- Fig 1 shows fragmentarily in a side-view certain parts of a traction vehicle to which a semi-trailer is coupled and it shows a coupling device for a plurality of fluidum hoses in accordance with the invention.
- Fig 2 is a top-view corresponding to Fig 1.
- Fig 3 is a side-view at a larger scale and partly in section of the coupling device shown in Fig 1.
- Fig 4 is a top-view corresponding to Fig 3.
- Fig 5 is a side section through a coupling member shown in Fig 2.
- Fig 1 shows fragmentarily a traction vehicle 1 1. It has a so called fifth wheel 12.
- a trailer in the form of a semi-trailer 13 is also shown. It has two beams 14, 15 connected by means of two I-beams 16, 17 and a plate 18.
- the plate 18 carries a kingpin 19 that mates with the fifth wheel 12.
- the axis I of the kingpin is the turning axis of the trailer on the tractor.
- a valve block 25 with a stub shaft 26 (Fig 5) is mounted on the trailer so that it is turnable about the axis of the stub shaft 26 which axis coincides with the axis I of the kingpin 19.
- a spring 27 ( Figure 5) is arranged to maintain the valve block forward directed.
- An arm 28 is mounted on the tractor so that it is pivotable in a vertical plane about an axis II by means of a motor 29.
- a valve block 30 is mounted on the arm 28.
- the valve blocks 25, 30 contain a number of hose-connected valves that are coupled together in pairs and opened when they are moved against one another.
- the hoses can be compressed air hoses for the air brakes of the trailer and hydraulic hoses for example for maneovering of the dumping, of the protective covers over the load, and the like, depending on which type of load the trailer is adapted to carry.
- the Figures 3 and 4 show in more detail the mounting on the arm 28 of the valve block 30 of the tractor.
- the outer part of the arm has a support plate 35.
- a short guiding beam 36 with rectangular cross section is mounted on the support plate 35 by means of mounts 37, 38 so that it will be axially slidable on the support plate.
- the valve block 30 has four sliding blocks 39 - 42 at its front and four rear sliding blocks 43 - 46 by which it is slidably guided in the guiding beam 36.
- a gas spring 47 is coupled between the guiding beam 36 and the valve block 30 and it strives to move the guiding beam 36 forwardly relative to the valve block 30 into the end position in which the guiding beam 36 is shown in Figures 3 and 4.
- a hydraulic cylinder 48 is coupled between a support 49 on the arm 28 and the valve block 30.
- the guiding beam 36 encompasses the valve block 30 and protects it.
- the arm 28 is pivoted down from an upright position to the position shown in Figure 3.
- the valve block 30 of the tractor is moved forwardly towards the valve block 25 of the trailer.
- the front edge 50 of the guiding beam 36 will engage with a corresponding surface 51 on the valve block 25 of the trailer so that the valve block 25 turns into coaxiality with the valve block 30.
- the guiding beam 36 takes support against the valve block 25 while the valve block 30 proceeds forwardly against the action of the gas spring 47 so that two guiding pins 52 with conical ends are guided into corresponding holes 53 of the valve block 28 and make a fine adjustment of the relative positions between the valve blocks before the valves of the valve blocks are coupled together in pairs.
- valves 54 of the tractor have extending cylindrical ends 55 (only one valve is denoted) that fits in and seal against corresponding bores 56 in the valves 57 (only one valve is denoted).
- the two cooperating valves 54, 57 open automatically when they are coupled together and close automatically when uncoupled.
- the valves are conventional and are not described in detail.
